Doesn't this prove people liked PM more than FOTR?

    4th weekend
    FOTR $16,201,260 on 3381 screens
    PM $25,632,000 on 3024 screens!

FOTR is making a lot less per screen so the length has nothing to do with it.

If PM got such bad word of mouth, and FOTR such great wom, how do you explain that?

My theory, non-geeks liked PM more than FOTR and there's the proof.

    Fire away

Actually, the length would directly impact the per screen totals, although the gap in earnings is greater than any impact it had in this case.

    AYBABTU?

    People like private messages??

Anyway, no people just wanted to find out for themselves if TPM was really that bad.

It was a star wars film made by George Lucas after all...

FOTR is a movie remake from PJ BASED on the books.

Well, also PM, as you refer to it, came out in the summer, while Fellowship has graced us in the winter, not to mention during the Holidays.

Numbers mean nothing. Fellowship is the better film, if only by the virtue of lacking Jar Jar and fart jokes.

And now, loyal readers, I present to you a snippet of the Fellowship of the Ring script, that was cut from the movie:

    Strider: Are you frightened?

    Frodo: umm...yes sir

    Strider: Note nearly frightened enough!

    Frodo: /farts/

    Strider: Pee-yusa!

I'm going to have to revert to the more oft used TPM instead of PM. LOTR is a fantastic set of books that have captured the imagination of millions for a lot longer than Star Wars. But what Star Wars has done a long time ago that LOTR has just done, is to go mainstream. Star Wars was the first to do it and is thus more widely appreciated by a vast demographic of ages and other factors. Star Wars also has 20 years on its side, whereas strictly speaking as a movie, LOTR only has one month. Give it time.

I'd love to see at least one of the LOTR movies beat Titanic, but I'll be happy if it just buries Harry Potter.

I don't see why we must always have threads comparing SW to FOTR. I love them both, and honestly do not care which one has more "fans" or is more "popular."

By the way, there is a reason I chose to put those two words in quotation marks....

    Mace Windy,

What if when Boromir's boat went over the waterfall, he said, "Wooooooooo! Now THIS is pod racing!"

That would have been very odd, considering he was dead.

TPM was also a children's movie, a demographic that is more likely to go back to the threatre for multiple viewings.

So Merry and Pippin doing the very, very cliche'd surprise-look-at-each-other-with-singed-faces-and-overly-teased-hair after setting off the fireworks and Gandalf hitting his head not once, but *twice* in a place he's visited before, can conveniently get swept under the rug?

Sorry, those moments made me wince *more* than anything in TPM...wish I had some people's blind spots

I would just like to state for the record that I like FOTR a lot more than I like Phantom Menace. Not to say that I don't like TPM, but...Fellowship of the Ring is the best movie I have ever seen.

This brilliant masterpiece by the Master Thespian Britany Spears shall overshadow these petty monetary acomplishments and in the process own you all.

    Exactly Nabooty...
It was for kids, it was the holidays, etc. etc.
Nobody would be making excuses if it was a SW movie, they'd all point as evidence of lack of quality.

    Let me restate my theory...
How could TPM make so much more than FOTR if people didn't like it?
    The numbers don't lie.

TPM made more money because (I believe) a bigger fan base than Tolkien and we all went to see the movie about 8 times a piece. There you go. Not as many people can/will go to a three hour long movie that many times. I will, of course, maybe even more, but then again, I have no life. ;)
