Dominions 4 is a turn based wargame set in a world fought over by gods, wizards and monsters. While it received a number of interface improvements over Dominions 3, it's still a difficult game to get into due to its complexity and depth.

The player takes on the role of a Pretender God, one of a number of powerful beings competing to become the supreme Pantocrator. You lead a thematic nation and are constrained by a Pratchett-esque system of belief called Dominion. Lose all your provinces, or the faith of your people, and it's game over.

The nations of the game are split into three ages. The nations are drawn from many sources: mostly empires, religions and creation myths, but also from historical epics and modern fiction. The ages gradually progress from a world dominated by high magic and fantastic creatures, to one where mundane humans are common and magic is fading.

The strategic map where soldiers are recruited, forts are built, mages research spells and priests preach the word of their god. The random map generator has a number of graphical styles, and there are a large number of premade scenarios included in the game and available from third party modders.

A battle involving the pharaonic Egyptian themed lizardmen. Battles are resolved automatically, with no player input after orders are assigned on the strategic map. Understanding unit formations and the capabilities of your troops is important, but the winning factor is always which spells your wizards have access to and are ordered to cast.
