CGI Charlton Heston shoots Cesar in the face. Millions of NRA members suddenly show up and murder all the apes while CGI Charlton Heston smiles at the camera and nods.

This is the best films series of the last 5-7 years, bar none. Really looking forward to another worthy entrant in this tale.

I actually agree with you Wocky. The two films have been consistently good and have almost purged that embarrassment from 15 years ago from my memory.

It looks kind of interesting, but I have to admit that I'm not really a fan of the recent Apes films. They're okay, but they lack the satire, social commentary and willingness to embrace the sheer absurdity of the plot that makes the original film so entertaining and thought provoking.

I'd strongly disagree. The original film did a nice job in building to a thematic point, and the warning about nuclear weapons was nice enough. It was also very well-tread, and not particularly stand out. By contrast, the first reboot's meditations on the ethics of animal research were much more novel, and I'd argue they were much more impactful to the popular conscience. Going further, the sequel's invocation of indigenous vs colonizer conflicts was more tastefully done and well-executed than pretty much anything that comes in the subsequent films of the original series. Only the riot imagery of "War for the Plnaet of the Apes" even comes close.

Asking for absurdity also seems to miss the point. This story, like most all science fiction, tries to employ deliberately impossible, counter-factual postulates to help make some insights about the way our actual world operates. To simply point out that these things "aren't real" or "sound silly" really misses the point. They deserve a sober treatment that allows the story to bring out its underlying messages. The reboots get this, and make an earnest go at it. I don't see how that's something to be dismissive about.

I'm not being dismissive at all, I'm merely someone who grew up with the original films and would simply prefer the new ones to include the things I personally liked about them. There's nothing wrong science fiction films being serious at all (there are many serious ones that I like), but there's nothing wrong with them presenting serious ideas while also being a piece of fun escapism at the same time (which the original does brilliantly in my opinion) either.
Also, the social commentary in the original was more than nuclear weapons, it was also about things like civil rights, religion and, yes, the treatment of animals.

It looks suitably epic. I really enjoyed the first two films, but my fear coming into this one was that, where you could see and sympathize with both sides in those, here they'd push the human side into being one dimensional, scene chewing baddies. Here I think we're actually meant to side w/the apes (a bold choice, asking an audience to root against its own avatars), but Harrelson's character, while... intense, has a logic that allows us to see how someone could come to that particular place. Always makes for a more compelling drama when that's the case.
