Hmmm... From what I've heard, you're the expert at sucking.

I know Carmen, I feel so embarrassed that I've been called a hick from Tennessee by a redneck from Texas.

That's a lie. I can prove it because typewriters didn't have superscript capabilities in the 70's.

I've justified it to my own satisfaction, and that's all that really matters. I have morality, but i feel no guilt about downloading music. I just don't consider it stealing. Maybe it's because i know i'll get around to buying it sooner or later anyway. We're not all as rich as Jim. If i don't want to stop, and you're unwilling to make me stop (by calling the feds or something) what more is there to say?? Besides, Carmen and Jim have both ignored several of my points. I'll just say one more thing about freedom. You all know the "or suffer" part of the thread title is a gag, so we won't talk about that. But the "land of the free" thing. Sure, freedom does not equal anarchy. But what does it mean when you say "land of the free"? And do you honestly believe the US is land of the free? Of all the western countries, the US is way down the ladder concerning social liberties. Another thing. Only in the US is calling someone a "lib" considered an insult.

    This discussion is over.

Kaine have you ever been to America? If not I suggest you don't judge it. I have never been to Ireland and I'm not about to begin judging that nation.
I don't really understand what your "lib" comment is refering to. Are you talking about calling someone a liberal is an insult. If that is what you meant it is not true at all. While some people bash the opposing political group, that sort of talk is not common at all. I have never heard anyone in real life call someone either a liberal or conservative and use it as an insult. I really have no idea what you actually meant by that.

If your going to make comments you could at least post proof. How is America down the ladder when it comes to social liberties? See you have to explain yourself if your going to say something like that.

I don't understand why Kaine is picking on Jim when Jim does what is right and refuses to steal music. I really don't get that.
If your going to steal fine, but don't accuse us of things because we refuse to take part in the stealing.

Stupid logic. I'll prove it with one question.

Have you ever been to Iraq?

And I have been to America, actually. WOW!! All of the sudden, I have the right to judge! Hot damn!

Go visit Denmark or Holland, or pretty much most European countries, but especially those two, and Amsterdam. It's a fact. I don't have to post proof, it's wasting my time. The US is down the ladder as far as social liberties are concerned.

My "lib" comment was referring to what Jim was saying. Several people on these boards think they can bat away arguments by resorting to insults.

Anyway, thats the end of it. Want to talk more, PM me, but i'd rather drop it all together.

So your going to judge an entire nation by a few posters on a SW board? For the information of everyone, I have traveled quite a bit. I have been to England, France, Spain, Monaco, Vatican City, Germany, Italy, Greece, and Turkey (I have been to some of these places a few times.) I have also lived my entire life in America. I feel I have a grasp on certain liberties and I don't feel America is lacking. I think Kaine that you are refering to the different economies and you are calling that more or less liberty. European nations in general are socialist. They can get free medical coverage or free educations. America is capitalist and does not have some of the things European nations do. However this difference in economy has nothing to do with liberty and freedom. Getting free medical exams is not giving a person more freedom. There are both advantages and disadvantages to the medical treatment in a socialist nation. Anyway this has nothing to do with freedom. Seeing that you will not say specificially what you mean, I really can't help you. IF you will not say what your are talking about then I really cannot comment.

Just to give you a little geography lesson, Amsterdam is a city not a country.

I have never been to Iraq nor do I judge Iraq so that does not prove anything in my opinion.

No, no, no, no. You bring this out in public, you finish it in public.

And what's this "have you been to Iraq" stuff? What does that have to do with anything?

If by social liberties, you mean that some drugs are legal there that aren't legal here, then that's right. If you mean that stealing is legal there, then I think you're a nutcase.

Having a different veiw of sexual morality and federal fiscal responsibility does not mean that we are less free than Europe. European governments for the most part follow a socialist economic model that is most definitely not as free as ours. In fact, we had to write new copyright laws to catch up with the stricter WTO laws in 1978 and to comply with the Berne Convention in 1989.

What you are doing in other words, is devaluing the work performed by those who's work you steal. I've heard many people say they couldn't live without music, but don't think twice about downloading it, even if that meant the artist wouldn't make enough money to live on and would have to give it up (and it's happened, believe me).

Another fallacy that you seem to adhere to is that artists are rich. The truth is that for every Madonna or Coldplay, there are 200 other artists on labels that will not recoup their recording budgets. You want to know why t-shirts and posters are so expensive at concerts? Because that becomes the artists' main source of income when sales disappear.

To ensure freedom the government must protect the people. Only then can freedom last. So yes drugs are illegal. Yes you can't drink or drive or steal. These things make freedom possible.

Okay, okay! I really must insist that this be my last post on the subject! But before i say more i must say Seldon i have nothing against you and you seem to be a man of intelligence. So i hope i haven't offended you in anyway. We're just debating here.

Anyway, there's more than just healthcare and economy differences. Just one difference, is sexuality. The age of consent, alot lower in most European countries. Some don't even have an age of consent! I think it's in Denmark that they have sex education at a much lower age, with a greater wealth of information. This has been proved to reduce teen pregnancies and STDs. There's abortion. Certain rights pertaining to homosexuals. Prostitution is legal in several European countries. More relaxed laws on pornography. I know what you're thinking, that this stuff is "bad", but it works. You think Abstinance only education works?? The age for drinking is also alot lower in most European countries. Lots of different things like that, social liberties.

Seldon, that is my LAST post on the subject. PM me if you want to talk further.

Why would you begin a discussion and then when it does not go your way you end it. This began in public has Jim has said and I think it should continue that way. I am not offended in any way. It is a discussion which needs to continue. America has many laws, but the citizen should not be permitted to do anything they like.

I took an excerpt from John Stuart Mills "On Liberty" I changed the quote and updated it.
?That the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over
any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to himself and onto
others. His own good, either physical or moral, is a sufficient warrant.?

That is my definition of what a government can and cannot do. To ensure liberty the government must secure the fact that the citizen cannot harm himself or anyone else. In my opinion America follows this Seldonian principle.

I didn't start this discussion. Carmen did. Jim continued it, as has Seldon. I've simply felt the need to defend myself. I think i've sufficiantly done that. This is not a political thread, we're supposed to be talking about the bands and artists listed in the first post.

Iif you haven't heard the music of any of them, how are you ever gonna hear them?

If i continue to debate, i'll just be repeating myself! I've said everything there is to say on it. That's it. Done. Fin. Either PM me, or expect no further responses.

Incidentally, there's also a pretty well-respected and famous recording studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
