I get the lore explanation, though it's not much of one. I just don't see the point of having them in the game in the first place.

It's a fantasy game. What's the point of having anything in it?

Every good fantasy story has a giant spider in it. Krull for example.

"A" giant spider. One is fine, when and where it's appropriate. Less so a horde of them crawling through every other cave in a world that likes to proclaim how realistic it is.

Realistic? When was that ever claimed or a selling point of DA?

    Normal wildlife like dragons?

Quite often, actually, back before it was released.

From that interview it's quite clear that the realism being mentioned is in how the world would build itself around fantasy staples. To use his mage example, it's easy to see the world being terrified of people with the ability to shoot lightning from their fingers and it's hardly a leap of imagination that in such a world mages would be kept under lock and key.

The world itself is still riddled with fantasy elements like werewolves, giant spiders, dragons, restless spirits and orcs... sorry, I mean darkspawn.

On another topic, I just ordered a copy of the complete Dragon Age: Origins set. So that is Origins, Awakening and all the DLC in one package. And it was all at the same price I paid for the original game. I'm anxiously awaiting getting my hands on all that lovely new material!:D

The only possible realistic response to the existence of giant spiders is "kill them all!" :p

Surely it would just be cheaper to buy the DLC etc rather than paying again for something you already have in part?

Possibly. However I do not have an internet connection fast enough for downloadable content. And I'm willing to pay that little extra as I'm infinitely more comfortable with having that content as a physical copy.

I mean come on... magic, demons, an alternate dimension called 'the fade'. I think I went there on my last holiday.

Fair enough, it is quite handy and it frees up hard drive space!

That's a lot more directed at characters, plot and world history than wildlife. There's nothing in that to suggest the world would be 'exactly the same as Earth, with the only difference being mages and dragons', at all. More 'realistic reactions to your decisions' and 'realistic politics and personal interactions' than 'we worked out the drag coefficient of dragon wings so they can actually fly'.

They pretty much left the "realistic fantasy" aspect behind in DA2 where every character is either naive and childlike or frothing mad.

Well, I just felt the characters weren't apathetic enough to be real people. [face_mischief]

I suppose that makes all those unresponsive NPCs standing around the most realistic of them all...

More realistic than the people jumping off rooftops.

Or, for that matter, straight through the ceiling.

I had so much fun randomly flirting with Aveline and having her completely not get it. :p She was my Hawke's best buddy.

Her romance quest was pretty painful. :p

But seriously, after she hooks up with Donnic she becomes frozen in that pose. It happens to me in every playthrough. Is it a bug or some sort of in joke?

It was. I laughed helplessly throughout. :p

No idea why that would happen, though. I never had that glitch. [face_thinking]

Question: In DA:eek:, do all the merchants do level scaling? I'd like to pick up an "older" set of armor, but everyone I've been to only sells drakeskin. Where can I buy lower level equipment when I'm a level 20?

Not sure, they do scale as far as I know. Your best bet is to horde the older stuff but I'm guessing it's too late for that. :p

Yup. Ah, well. Gives me an excuse to do another playthrough. Thanks!

I just completed Awakenings with my level 32 female Dalish Elf warrior and am about to move on to Golems of Amgarrak. I definately want to see how the final siege differs depending on what decisions are made, if there are differences at all. And I loved the feeling of power when it came to making decisions in court, that was definately a neat touch.

I did find the ending a bit of an anti-climax though. My Grey Warden stabs the Mother through the gob with a sword and then the game ends! What the hell!? No victory celebration? No pat on the back? Life as a Grey Warden appears to be all work and no play these days. :(
