    Title: Dreamer
    Author: karebear214
Disclaimer: As always, Star Wars does not belong to me.
Author?s Notes/Summary: Quick, short (about 500 words), insta-bunny in response to the New Challenge Thread Independence Day Challenge. Young Anakin.

BOOM! Anakin jumped backward as one of the large pieces of metal he?d been welding together shifted and fell to the ground. It was about a meter?s drop, and the heavy equipment ignited an explosion of sand when it hit the ground. Anakin shut off the welding torch, snapping the blue flame out of existence ? for now. He patiently re-affixed the components together and began again. It was getting dark rapidly now that the suns had set, and hard to see ? his only light now came from the white pinpricks of starlight in the clear black sky.

?Ow!? He pulled his hand back quickly, frowning and muttering to himself when he realized that he?d cut his finger on the sharp piece of metal. It didn?t hurt too much, but a drop of bright red blood pooled on his skin. He stuck the finger in his mouth and took a step back from the rusted old pile of junk he?d been buried in. He analyzed it, looking at the big picture, putting the pieces together in his mind. He had a plan now, he decided with a satisfied nod. And the bleeding had mostly stopped.

It still didn?t look like much when he finally gave up for the night, but that didn?t matter. This was the first time he was attempting a project of his very own ? not something Watto was making him do, or something his mother needed, or something he?d promised to fix up for a friend. The podracer was his way of breaking free ? it might not take him far, but when he built it, he followed his own orders. He didn?t care how long it took to finish.

And when it was finished? it was hard to think about that far in the future, he didn?t even have all the necessary parts yet, and it might take weeks or months to get them, but when he did, he?d be able to fly. Not off-planet, true, not yet, but one step closer. He would race through Tatooine?s canyons, at a speed he could barely comprehend. Never mind the fact that no human had ever survived a podrace. He could do it, he knew he could. He?d be famous. And rich ? podracers got a lot of money when they won, probably more than he?d ever seen at any one time, even when he was in charge of figuring out the money at the shop. With that money, after enough races, he would have enough to buy his freedom, and his mother?s. That was what really mattered.

His logical mind fought with the dreamer in his heart ? there were plenty of flaws in his plan, but he didn?t want to think about those now. His mother had called him in for bed what seemed like hours ago, and he was tired, even if he told himself he wasn?t. He collapsed into bed, pausing just long enough to kick off his boots. And he dreamed of speed, and of flying. He dreamed of freedom.

It's kind of sad to revisit the young Ani, the innocent boy so full of dreams.

It was a very well done viggie, realy pulls at the heartstrings. :)
