The Dresden Files is a series of books about a detective in Chicago who is also a wizard. With help from Bob the Skull (a noncorperal entity that resides in a skull) and other mythical creatures. You go thru the jobs with Harry Dresden as he works with the Chicago PD and so on. I am horrible at descriptions - sorry... but there are 7 books a thte moment and the 8th due out this summer.

    Storm Front, Book 1
    Fool Moon, Book 2
    Grave Peril, Book 3
    Summer KNight, Book 4
    Death Masks, Book 5
    Blood Rites, Book 6
    Dead Beat, Book 7
    Proven Guilty, Book 8

They are pretty enjoyable. I was surprised on how much I enjoy them... I wasn't expecting to but my friend kept bugging me about them so I finally said I would give the first one a try and was hooked within a few chapters....

    I'm about halfway through it and I really like it. My only problem is that Harry seems a little egotistical 8-}

[face_laugh] It kinda got on my nerves. The story was good, though. I [face_love] Bob, and I'm going to read the rest of them. I didn;t like the end, though. He rushed too much information into the last couples pages because it was after the climax and just wrap-up, but I wouldn't have minded seeing more of the conversations that must have taken place.

I love Harry! He's such a sarcastic ass, my favorite type of hero :D I've just finished been 6 and am waiting for 7 to come out on paperback (May 2 IIRC). These books are interesting, and cute with out being cutesy.

Butcher reminds me a lot of Laurell K Hamilton before she got into all the sex crap.

JD did you know they have a mini-series coming out this summer on the Dresden Files?

NY - I hope you like the rest... most of his writing seems like that at the begining. The better books are near the end of the series. Summer KNight is the most interesting to me

And yeah - you can't help but love Bob the Skull

I thought of her too, mostly because Merry and Anita are hard-asses who think that no one else understands what they're going though and they have to be tough and rough and know better than eveyone else, who is a wimp with silly emotions. Reminded me a little of Harry. But she's gone downhil from there . . .

    There's a thread about jer somewhere around here . . .

The first few books of hers are good, but then she (so I'm told, I"ve only read the second series this happens in but I think it happens in her Anita Blake books, too) spends too much time on the sex. One book I read by her was literally porn or close to it. There was almost no plot, and I didn't enjoy it. But try the first Anita Blake book.

Oh, if you need book recommendations, I've got tons.

By the way, I have a question--why did Harry kill the girl in his first relationship? It was mentioned but not elaborated on.

Read on, it comes out in Summer Knight. I don't want to ruin the suprise by telling you.

Another author very similar to Butcher is Simon Green. He's got a hero who's a PI, specializing in finding things and isn't totally human. These take place in London. If you like Butcher check Green out.

You get a bit more with each book... everybook grows on the last one - giving you more background and fleshing out Harry and the other characters.

Simon Green, eh? When I first read the name I thought it said Seth... ha!
