Let's say I wanted to make a DVD composed of a compilation of little videos.

Also I wanted to have seperate menu's, and menu transitions such as clips in between menus.

What program would I use to create this (PC based)?
I looked into Adobe Encore, and downloaded a demo.

Are there other/better programs I could use?

    Thanks\Frau

Be sure to take a look at Ulead DVD Workshop 2.
It's usually street priced $50 - $100 less than Encore, and it supports all the cool motion menus, menu transitions, multiple audio/subtitle tracks, etc.

Details and demo download available here.

    Have fun.

Encore will do everything you just mentioned. I used it quite a bit and have been pleased with its performance.

One easy program for DVD creating is Pinnacle Studio 8. It is pretty easy to use once you get used to it. Course, I had to learn it the hard way... Anyways, it's pretty useful for creating DVD menus.

At this point Encore is only a windows program. Anyone know if they have plans for makin a mac version? If not has anyone used DVD Studio Pro? Looks pretty awesome but has a huge pricetag around 500 bucks.

As movie-type-software goes, that's about average.

I've used DVDWS2. Just fished writting a review for the CreativeCOW website, so I'll post a link once it's up if anyone is interested. I was actually pretty surprised at how powerful it was for the price.

Last time I checked the B&H website, they were selling Encore at $549 and DVDWS2 at $439.

The last time I had a big DVD job, I had to outsource the DVD authoring because it needed to be written to DLT for a production run of a few thousand units. For what I paid, I could turn a profit on buying DVDWS2 and a DLT drive with only two jobs, and have more features on those finished projects too!

Want to create a cool, 3d menu interface where the camera "flys" from one menu to the next? Got it.
Want to have a commentary audio track or additional laguages or subtitles? Got it.
Want to include a built in web site or other computer readable content in an extra folder? Got it.
Looping video behind your menus? Video buttons? Custom buttons? Yup.
How about a "follow the white rabit" style pop-up secret menu? It's possible.

Anyway, if you have specific questions on DVDWS2, post 'em up and I'll be happy to try and answer them. Sounds like Spiff is you're goto guy for Encore questions.

    Have fun.

Free software is best found at www.downloads.com for trails and/or freeware. If you mean getting illegal copies of expensive software for free, then shame on you, shame on you........i'll meet you round the back in 5.

Dude, if you have access to a mac, try giving Apple DVD studio pro a try.

I havn't yet found a program that matches it's power. You even get a small program in the bundle that let's you mix your own 5.1 sountracks.
