DJ’s stolen ship is called “The Libertine” and he’s a character with some Libertarian views in comparison to collectivism.

 

He stole that ship. Sounds very non-Libertarian to me, as he stole private property and violated the non-aggression principle

 

Luke’s X-Wing being immersed in water again could be seen as a metaphor for the crisis of faith he’s having following his guilt and frustration with the cycle of violence. It’s perhaps the best known identifiable visual of when he quit in the OT. There’s likely more to it beyond that. Including him not wanting to leave and just the logistics of showing us he wouldn’t have been able to when the grand reveal of the ending is fully processed but the visual could serve several purposes.

 

The actual word Libertine fits all the same with his persona but he does also seem to share some Libertarian views in comparison to the more black and white left and right conflict of the The FO vs the Resistance/Rebellion.

 

The close up of the iron coming down on the uniforms and the establishing shot of that room following Rose, Finn and DJ dressing as FO officers, was inspired by a 1978 film Hardware Wars which is a cult classic.

While more of a rogue one Easter egg, hyperspace tracking first began as a project in that era. A technology they’ve been working on ever since.

 

Kurosawa’s Rashoman appears to be the inspiration for the different details of each telling of the night Luke foresaw what Ben Solo would become and drew his saber in a daze before snapping back out of it.

 

The opening shot of the Casino is an homage to the 1927 silent war film Wings which is the first film to ever win the Academy Award in history and is widely seen as being ahead of its time for cinematography.
