This subject is quite intriguing. In the 20th century, writers such as Immanuel Velikovsky, David Rohl, and others have argued for a restructuring of Egyptian chronology on the basis that Mantheo's Kings of Eypt compilation is too long and could be shortened. Rohl, in particular, has identified Ramses II, commonly depicted in popular culture as the Pharaoh of the Exodus, with the Bibilical King Shishak I mentioned in the Bible during the reign of Rehoboam of Judah.

Most of these men accept the sacking of Thebes by the Assyrian King Ashurbanipal in 664 BC as the only certain fixed anchor point; to them anything going backwards from that is not really certain.

Naturally, proponents of the conventional chronology have attacked these chronologies as completely without merit.

I don't think there will ever be a definitive, widely accepted chronology, but the subject is still a fun one to study.

No, he's right. If you must include it, tack it on at the end.

Exactly. It makes it seem like you're desperate for people to agree with you, but you already know that they don't.

I don't agree. How many times have people led posts with "so this is cool: [stuff]." It's just a common lead in. You'd have to be pretty silly to use it to be persuasive.

Does this in any way involve

    1. Men posing as women and claiming to be cancer-sticken, punk-rock nurses,
    2. backpacking into war zones, or
    3. bewbs?

If none of the above, then not interesting.

This Velikovsky guy sounds like a huge crackpot and Rohl has apparently been widely debunked by radiocarbon dating. This reeks of Biblical apologist Trojan Horse tactics.

Carbon dating. This is easily disproven. Historians and anthropologists are neither dumb nor are they conspiring to keep us in the dark.

This thread probably isn't going to go the way you hoped, but I gave you a "like" for handling that rather well.

Velikovsky believed that the planet Venus was responsible for the biblical events of Exodus, and that the planet Jupiter was
responsible for the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.

I've spent the last few days obessing over major controversies and scandals in anthropology and the social sciences more generally (margaret mead possibly having been misled in fiji, napoleon chagnon et al and the yanomami, the sokal affair) so you have no idea how much i needed to hear this affirmation right now :p

I'm glad to reassure you, but let me add that at the same time, consensus of intellectuals in the field has proven to be incorrect in the past, despite the high intelligence of many of the participants as well as their honest dedication to finding the truth.

An error of this magnitude, though, is highly improbable.
