It began with the Sandskimmers game. Spencer coached his way to his first win and he coached his players to do whatever they needed to do to win. Including tackling head first. I was so irate I couldn’t speak. Luckily the Starkillers came out and played the same style of ball they had played the first four games. I didn’t even mind that we were down by 10 points at the half.

Despite the lopsided score Tomas and Jimsey seemed to be having a good time as well. I couldn’t help but look at the holos on the wall it Tomas’ dorm room. There were several of him and the Twi’lek girl he had hugged on the sideline a few weeks back after the Kryat Dragons victory.

When the second half began I forgot all about the holos of the Twi’lek girl. The Starkillers came out of the visiting locker room a changed team. Noah Till was the first Starkiller to catch my attention when he leaped in the air and head butted a ball that was on its way into the goal. Noah Till head butted a ball probably exceeding 64 kilometers per hour. I tried to figure out how dazed he was after his landing.

Before I had the time to figure out if Noah was okay Wylla Sniider caught my eye. She used her noggin to knock a Monarch Defender right off his feet. It was a spectacular play. It allowed for Hervey to get control of the ball Noah had deflected with his head and pass it up to Lawco. From there it was a simple pass to Dunerider and three points were scored.

The rough dangerous play continued. The Starkillers charged their way right back into the game. I could hear Jimsey and Tomas celebrating. Wylla Sniider was dribbling up field at such a quick pace her fellow midfielder Davy Lawco was unable to keep up. Our own offensive line moved aside allowing Wylla to continue at her pace to a close range attempt on goal. Monarch goal tender Corvo Antilles wasn’t going to let a midfielder score on him. He ran out to tackle Wylma himself as she lined up her shot.

Wylma attempted to change directions and avoid the tackle. Corvo was easily able to take her down and in the process Wylma’s ankle turned in a very unnatural way. Play had to be stopped and Wylma had to be helped off the field. Nina Odette was sent in to take Wylma’s spot next to Davy Lawco for the rest of the game.

While Wylma was helped off the field the Monarchs were able to regroup and re-strategize. The rest of the game was a rough and tough back and forth duel. It ended with a buzzer beating goal from the Monarchs and a second straight defeat for the Starkillers.

I shut the holo off in disgust. Disgust in our dangerous strategy of play. Sure the Starkillers had come back and nearly won the game. They’d even played a good game after losing a starting midfielder. Why? Why had coaches and players risked the future health of players with plays I’d strictly forbidden knowing what we know about Ty’s own head injuries? I was fuming! Then I had an idea. Without telling anyone where I was going I jumped off the sofa and briskly walked to my office.

I took a seat behind my desk and began to type out new contracts. New contracts for every Starkiller player, every reserve and every Sandskimmer. I was so immersed I completely lost track of time. “Rich what are you doing?” I heard Ryan ask. I looked up to see his head peaking in the doorway.

“Putting my contract writing skills to use,” I quipped. “Didn’t go to law school for nothing.”

“Yea well dinner is getting cold. You gonna eat?”

“Can you bring me a plate? I’m busy.”

“Aren’t you going to meet the team at the spaceport?”

“Shavit, I forgot. I’ll message the Coaches that I have more important matters to attend to. Now go get my dinner. I need to concentrate.”

“You can be a real Dick sometimes,” Ryan fumed. The comment hurt, but I kept working.

A droid brought my dinner in. I worked through dinner and half the night. When I was done I printed a fresh stack of contracts. I scanned the batch of Sandskimmer contracts and sent them Spencer’s way. I packed mine in a briefcase and headed to bed. Ryan was up watching holovision in our bed. “Finally,” he said.

“You shouldn’t have waited up,” I said as I changed into a lightweight t-shirt and fresh pair of underwear.

“I wanted to make sure you were okay.”

“I’m more thank okay. I just lifted a great from my shoulders. Now let’s get some sleep,” I said as I slipped under the covers and gave Ryan a kiss on the cheek.

Luckily the Coaches and team had a planned rest day the next day. I was able to sleep until I had to get Jimsey up for school. After dropping him off I went for my run, in the daylight. It was wonderful. Late in the afternoon I met alone with Ty. I conferenced him in with the specialist from Corellia and we arranged for the doctor to come to Ralltiir and examine Ty early next week. Ty seemed uncomfortable and unhappy. I reminded myself I was doing the right thing.

I didn’t rest easy for long. Spencer called hot as hell about an hour later. “What’s all this paper that keeps arriving on my desk?” He demanded.

    “Contracts,” I answered simply.

“Well I can see that. But what the hell are you sending over contracts for mid-season?”

“The contracts are for our protection,” I explained. “Since you decided to throw my guidelines out the window last week I decided a new tactic was in order. These contracts take away all of our liabilities if someone is to get hurt on the field or at a training facility. Home games, away games, visiting weight rooms, to practice facilities. Each player is agreeing that if they are injured and that injury should somehow affect them later on in life they will not make us liable.”

“Can you do that?” Spencer asked.

“I can and I have. Make sure you tell your players to think this through, give them time to have their agents or a lawyer help them understand the terms. If anyone doesn’t sign before your next game, play a reserve who does sign. This is serious Spencer. If we continue to play this aggressive there are going to be long term effects that could bankrupt us later.”

“I think you’re overreacting, just a little. But you are the boss.”

“Damn straight. Now get those contracts signed. Let me know if you have any hold outs.”

The next morning I stood in front of the training room with a stack of contracts for the Starkillers. As I passed them around the room I made sure everyone understood that they were to return them to my office by Friday. I encouraged each player to read them over and as I had told Spencer to tell his players to make sure that they went over the contracts with their agents and or lawyers.

When I was finished I headed for the door, but a voice stopped me. “Mr. Vigo,” Noah Till called out. “You can have mine back now.” I took the contract in fear that he was going to refuse only to see his freshly signed name.

“Don’t you want to take some time to think this through?” I asked.

“No sir,” Noah assured me. “I’m here to play Limmie. Everyone knows you play Limmie you get hurt. I just want to practice.”

I took the contract and Noah headed for the field. Several players grabbed pens and signed their contacts. I wasn’t sure whether I should be relieved or more concerned. Did these players really care so little about their future health? Should I have made Ty Allin describe his diagnosis? Ty and Dash followed their players out to the field. One player remained in the training room. “I’m not signing this,” Kettin Hervey said handing me the contract.

    “It’s your choice,” I replied.

“What do you want me to do?” He asked.

“Well, if you refuse to sign the contract you will have to enter the free agency market. No one plays on this team if the contract goes unsinged,” I explained.

“I’ll clean out my locker,” Kettin answered sadly.

    IC: Harron Myrat'ur
    Leigh's Apartment, O'Pahz, Carratos

It was another stunning defeat for the Pirates. Once again the Senators beat them, and soundly. Despite Leigh's best efforts, scoring nine of the team's ten points, she couldn't carry the team, not this time. Everyone was taking a little hard, Harron included. He was dealing with it by indulging in his vice, losing himself in a game of cards. The rich idiot game, the challenge game with real players, and, when those games weren't available, Leigh's game. It put some of the players on edge but, Leigh managed to talk them down, letting the assistant coach play with them.

"Anyone want a beer?" Van Pelt, she preferred to go by her last name, called out from the kitchen. Several calls were made in response, though many called for rum, the Pirates that they are. Harron didn't ask for anything, his father was a drinker, and Harron was trying to avoid having another vice to deal with. "Which kind Rum, I'm looking at Black Bart, Tortuga, Arcadia, and…One Eye?"

"Not the Golden Eye." Leigh yelled from the table, "That's for a special occasion."

"Alright, what do you guys want?"

"Arcadia." Was the resounding answer, there was a reason it was the most popular rum on Carratos.

"Wait…" the midfielder said, "Why is their Nym's Finest in here." Boos echoed through the surprisingly spacious apartment.

"It was a gift." Leigh shot back, "I couldn't just say no,"

"You also didn't need to put it in your cabinet." Brian retorted.

    "Wait, it's been opened."

All eyes fall on the hostess of the game, her eyes wide, "What!?" she said with a shake of her head, "I had to try it, just to see if I liked it."

"You're a traitor to your kind." The bulky human corner back shouted in disgust.

"Oh, come on, like you haven't tried rums from other planets."

"No, because I'm a Carratosian through and through, I bleed Arcadia Rum."

"That explains a lot." Boutros snorts.

    "Explains what,"

"Why you're always so slow on the transition. You're drunk!"

"You know what I mean." The banter went back and forth for a bit, until Bel spoke up,

"Was this a gift from one of your adoring fans?" he asked the mirth just dripping from his words.

It was no secret that Leigh was one of the more popular players on the team. She was the star forward, and by most accounts, rather pretty. The sports pages, the kind that talk about both on and off field happenings, had made no shortage of noise about the fact that she was still single, and hadn't even been seen with anyone out on anything that could remotely be called a date.

She was either keeping things so low profile that no one even knew, or was legitimately not interested in dating. The latter seemed the most likely, the 'reporters' on Carratos were fantastically good at digging things up. They were the first to reveal that Else had been going out with an old flame from her Carratos League days, none of the team, outside of Leigh and Seiji even knew about that. However, other rumors surrounded Leigh. Less flattering ones, ones that claimed she'd had an affair with Coach Copin. It had been years since he'd left and yet some corners of the holo-net refused to let it go, even claiming that she carried a torch for the Pirates' first coach. To Harron she just seemed like a dedicated woman, married to her job, and there was nothing wrong with that.

Right now though, she was focusing intently on him. The bet was to the assistant coach and he was still considering. Should he raise or just call? It was a hard choice, he had a good hand but, it was hard to tell if it was good enough, Leigh had proven to be a good sabcc player, on par with him. He had to make a choice soon, if he didn't well she'd probably think she had him.

"Raise," he said throwing more markers into the pot. He wasn't completely sure that was the right play but, it felt right, and if Leigh called that would mean more winnings. He felt that familiar rush, the thing that kept him coming back to the table, the thing that made him forget about everything going on around him.

Leigh's brown eyes flicked between him and her cards, then back to him. He fought his urge to smile, he had her, maybe. He saw her lip quiver again, was that a tell? He'd seen her do it before, but, that was usually when she was talking to him, not playing against him. Did she want to say something? They were among friends, weren't they, she should feel free to speak her mind.

"Fold." She said throwing her cards away but, her eyes didn't leave Harron.

"haha," he laughed the grin he'd been holding back finally appearing on his face. He greedily raked in his chips, he knew they weren't real money but, his mind enjoyed the feeling all the same, the stream of endorphins hitting his brain told him that this was good.

Again Leigh's face flickers, her lip shuttering.

"Something wrong Leigh?" He asked, Else and Seiji both turn their attention to their friend, then back to Harron.

"It's…It's…ahhhhh" he could see that she was trying to cover her own nervousness, "It's nothing, next hand?" Before anyone could say anything she was already dealing out the cards. The coach sensed something, there was something not right about what was going on, he could speak up, try and get the tight lipped woman to say what was on her mind, or he could just let it drop. Looking at his hand, he decided to let it go. He had another winner in his hands he could feel it. All other thoughts were banished from his mind by another dose of neurochemicals flooding his brain.

He kept playing and playing, completely forgetting about the game against the Mariners, the practice coming the following day, or the fact that it was already rather late. When the time came to pack it up, he didn't want to leave. He needed more, more of that sweet feeling. Unfortunately it looked like he wasn't going to get it from this table anymore. He'd just have to find another place…

"I understand, thank you," Addison said as she hung up her personal comm. unit.

She sighed as she thrust her hands into her pockets and stood near Mylessa McCloud as the pair surveyed 4th Memorial Fleet Stadium. The proud Monarchs logo emblazoned on the midfield line a stark reminder of the quality play this particular franchise had always brought to the league. Their hard work had paid off with a championship in 280 with a resounding, and universally cheered, victory over the Kashyyyk Rangers.

"I won two championships against this team," Mylessa McCloud stated as the sun broke through the cloudy sky and illuminated the stadium.

"I remember watching them growing up. Heck of a game. Both of them," Addison replied. "All I want to do is make sure you get to hoist that trophy as a head coach, become one of the few who were able to cross that great divide."

"One day, perhaps," Mylessa said, "how did the trade talks go?"

"They're dead. We're going with the roster we have," Addison tersely replied.

"That's not a bad thing. We played well against Denon and Jakku. Keep in mind that we have young players who have yet to experience a winning season together. We've been in a bit of a slump but I feel like we're heading on out of it," Mylessa said.

"I hope you're right," Addison replied, "I really hope you're right."

Mylessa grunted and said, "They don't pay me to be right. They pay me to win."

"Well said," Addison said as the Smugglers players headed out onto the pitch to warm up.

OOC: Time to try my hand. First Limmie post, I'll get better as I progress, honest. ;)

    Antaro Kiraon IC:
    ~Iziz, Onderon~

    *Click*

The holoscreen shut off and Antaro Kiraon leaned back behind his exquisitely carved wooden desk within his modern office. His eyes closed and he took in the recent aftermath of the game against Bilbringi.

It hadn't exactly faired as well as he hoped. It was a close match for sure, but in the end it hadn't swung their way. Two point loss, which was tough but that was the way it was in Limmie. Even with a plethora of individual performances worthy of note, a team it did not make.

    "Mr. Kiraon, sir?"

Opening his eyes again and turning his sight over to the blue twi'lek woman that had entered attired in a professional dress of high quality, he gave a smile.

"Ah. Iuvak'aje. I believe I'll need a Dos Iziz this evening."

The woman, his personal secretary, gave an apologetic smile. "So they've continued the back and forth trend?"

As Iuva moved to his small cooler on the other side of the room to get the drink, Antaro gazed over some of the stats sheets and post-game social media feeds on his computer terminal.

"Unfortunately, yes. They were close to breaking through this time, but not yet I suppose."

The twi'lek opened the bottle and set it down on his desk for him to grab at his leisure. "Thank you, Iuva. It was a pity I wasn't able to attend this time."

"Yes, I'm sure they would have liked seeing you. You get along with the players unusually well for an owner, which is a great positive if I may say. But your scheduled meetings couldn't be postponed I'm afraid."

    "Am aware."

Taking a sip, he set the bottle back down and continued to look over the feed on his terminal. Kuat next week. Then a home game against Bespin's Cloud City. The latter he wouldn't make either as he had a meeting scheduled with the ELL Commissioner that day, so perhaps he'd make sure to take a trip to Kuat for the next game at least.

"You asked for me?" Iuva gently reminded him, causing him to turn his chair to face her.

"Apologies, yes. Check my schedule for this coming week, I want to make the game against the Triforce. And I wanted you to send that message I mentioned earlier to the Tourist Board."

    "Of course, sir."

"Remind me to tell Hedath about my observations later too, will you?"

Iuva inputted some information on a tablet she held and looked up with a smirk. "I see you can't help with your insight still."

    "A player's habits die hard."

    "What did you see?"

Antaro stroked his beard idly for a moment as his gaze went to that far off place that only Limmie could inhabit.

"Ringrove is doing decently, but she's been a little slow on her defense these past couple of games. Perhaps some encouragement would do her well, seems hesitant after she got burned badly mid game against Zeltros. Drelzahviss should rest a game, though I bet he knows that already, Swisku is doing ok, but she needs to step it up. Kettwood is giving her a run for her spot already."

    "All good observations, anything else?"

"Hm…just to echo a couple of things he himself told me a few days ago. Sage is a good leader potential, keeps a cool head, just needs to work on bringing them all together. That's their thing right now. The meshing is slowly improving game by game, but not one hundred percent yet. But they better get it soon, almost too late. Lastly, Kurin is good."

    "The kyuzo?"

"Yes, our left half back. We should continue to keep an eye on him, has a lot of potential. Him and our team captain both….you still have trouble keeping up with Limmie don't you."

"I don't breathe it like a second air like you do, Mr. Kiraon."

    Antaro chuckled.

"Soon enough, Iuva, all of Onderon will be."

There were celebratory ales for the adults and fizz for the children as the Starkillers and Junkers shook hands after their match. “5 points for Olidiipo!” Jimsey exclaimed raising his bottle of fizz.

“Andres had 8 points,” Zoey was quick to point out. “But for a rookie Olidiipo did okay.”

“He did more than okay,” Jimsey insisted. “Fortune’s a ball hog.”

I quickly pulled my own ale bottle out of my mouth and swallowed fast, in case I needed to intervene.

“Fortune is everything you wish Olidiipo was,” Zoey said smartly.

“I’ll bet they both make the All Star roster,” Mr. Fortune piped up unexpectedly.

Zoey actually took the hint and sat down to finish her fizz. “How about Noah Till?” Lucie whispered in my ear.

“What about him?” I asked using my normal voice.

“His defense is keeping this team alive,” Lucie commented. “Did you see him throwing his body into those offensive players?”

“At least today he wasn’t ramming his head into offensive players,” I replied.

“Ty was fuming about that,” Lucie assured me. “More so than the loss even. I’m glad you all won today. Ty’s been in a foul mood about having to see the head specialist tomorrow.”

    “Why?” I asked not understanding.

“He’ doesn’t like all the questions, the examinations. Do like going to the Doctor, Rich?”

    “Well, no.” I admitted.

I was glad Lucie said something. I was less surprised to find her and Ty at the appointment the next morning. Lucie treated Ty like one of her children. Ty nervously chewed on the straw of a large fizz as he answered questions for the physician. The doctor explained he had already seen holos of Ty’s brain and that the damage was significant. His prognosis though was less grim. He said Ty may be able to hold onto his memory for up to 20 or 30 more years, twice the time of his original diagnosis. However such an outcome would require cooperation and effort on Ty’s part.

I watch as Ty slam his fist into a table. “I don’t have hours a day to sit in an office and do memory games.“ He fumed. “I have a career and a wife and kids.”

“Maybe your wife and kids will be willing to help you do the exercises at home,” the doctor suggested.

“And let my kids find out their father is stupid? Hell, no.”

“Ty, your brain is injured.” Lucie offered. “We are your family and we want to help keep you healthy.”

“I’m fine now. What if this memory loss never really happens? What if this guy is just after our credits?” Ty challenged.

“I’m here to help when you’re ready to accept,” Lucie said pushing her chair back.

We parted ways in front of the office. When I got to my speeder a tall familiar figure loomed nearby. “Uncle Jim,” I greeted. “What brings you here?”

“Ty Allin was here to see a specialist,” my Uncle stated.

“So what if he was?” I quipped.

“Richard I want you to sell the team. I want Tomas back home. Your father would have done the same after seeing him get injured a week ago.”

“Tomas is fine,” I reassured. “He played great this week. He rested the prescribed amount of time. None of us has anything to worry about.”

“You believe that?” My uncle asked.

“I do.” And I meant it, all those holos of Ty had shown a man who got up and continued playing. Tomas had taken all the necessary precautions.

I watched in disbelief as my uncle slammed his fist into the pilot’s side door of my speeder leaving a dent. “I’m sure you don’t see anything wrong with your speeder than either,” he challenged before walking away purposefully.

Maybe I should have called law enforcement. I had more important things to do like meet with McMee. Ever since she had come out to me I had wanted to check in on her. Today I had planned a lunch with her and her girlfriend. Ryan met me at the café to make it a sort of group date thing.

McMee and her girlfriend were pleasant company. They had all sorts of questions about the adoption process. How we decided to adopt non humans? How did the kids get along with us? Was it more work than human children? “Jimsey would be thrilled if you came by the house for dinner,” I suggested.

That afternoon when I picked up Jimsey from school I told him one of the Starkillers would be coming for dinner the following night.

“Oh my gosh, oh my gosh! Olidiipo is coming to my house?” He asked excitedly.

“I didn’t say it was Olidiipo,” I said gently.

“Ah, man. You got me all excited for nothing.” He complained.

“So you don’t want to meet Caffrette McMee?” I asked.

“Well I guess I do,” he conceded.

The next night Jimsey was coming around to the idea of hosting McMee. He wrote her a short note of welcome and drew her a picture of her and Olidiipo on the field. She was passing and Olidiipo was scoring a goal. “Do you think she’ll like it?”

    “I do,” I said approvingly.

“And she’s in a relationship with another girl? Like you and daddy? Does she have kids?”

“Not yet,” I answered. “She’s not even married yet.”

“You don’t have to be married to have kids,” Jimsey informed me.

It was true, but I couldn't bring myself to admit that to Jimsey. “Why don’t you go put a clean shirt on, she’ll be here any minute.”

McMee loved the drawing from Jimsey. She was a very good sport about all of his questions about Olidiipo as well. “I am lucky to be his teammate,” she said at least 3 times.

McMee didn’t seem to mind Shannon’s antics either. Shannon was at that age where she wasn’t speaking yet, but she knew damned well what she wanted and she found ways to let you know what that was. McMee even volunteered to read Shannon her bedtime story.

“I didn’t realize little Dac’s could stay awake for six books,” she said coming down the stairs about 30 minutes later.

“You got off easy,” Ryan commented.

“Got any plans for the All Star break?” I asked to make small talk.

“Why, you need a sitter?” McMee asked.

I laughed out loud. “No. I was just genuinely curious, that’s all. Ryan and I both have family to help out.”

    “You’re lucky,” McMee said sadly.

Her girlfriend, Juliet, had been quiet most of the night. “Caff’s parents haven’t been too accepting of our relationship,” she said as she took a seat on our sofa.

“Well anytime you need someone to confide in you can talk to me,” I offered. “My door is always open. House or office.”

“You’re the best boss a girl could have. We haven’t told anyone yet, but we’re engaged. I was kinda hoping you’d be in the wedding. You and Ryan,” she said turning towards my husband.

Ryan couldn’t help himself. “I’m a decorator you know. I can help with the planning.”

“Really?” Juliet asked. “Cause we could really use some help.”

That evening Ryan was the one up late working.

    IC: Briar (Thorne) Adama
    Coruscant

It had been a thrilling back-and-forth game for 58 minutes. The Mets and Senators had slugged it out on offense the entire game, beating the defenses into submission time and again as the points kept flying on the board. Without Leia Adama on the field for the second-straight week, the Senators had found a spark on offense behind the return of Freya Stormhelm. The third-year forward, who had been left out of the regular rotation after Bas Wren had beaten her out in camp, had come back out with a vengeance. She made plays that had been severely lacking the prior two games to her return, in which the team scored a combined four points in two losses.

Prior to the game, Briar had her hand on her datapad while waiting for the game to start, ready to send in a call for a call-up should the team not perform well. One good game aside, this team had been out-of-sorts all season; shaking things up was an easy way to see how they would respond. But her hand had eventually strayed from the datapad as the game went on and the offense had come out on fire.

“Stormhelm has to be our MVP right now,” Tela Loni commented during the first half. “She has brought intensity to this team that was sorely lacking before. How could we miss her contributions from last year in our analysis for this year?”

“Having a Salbukk winner will do that,” Briar replied. Having a star in Adama at the full overshadowed everyone else, including Stormhelm. “It’s when you don’t have a mega-star that you begin to see what you really have throughout the ranks.”

Now, with less than two minutes remaining, the Mets had the ball and were up by one. The Meril triplets had played well, and were now playing keep-away with the ball from the tired Senator defense. Christine Gamble had played almost the entire game, only getting three minutes of rest on the sidelines before heading back out. Little-used sub Nevan had come in for his length and wingspan, but he was not very experienced at the Elite League level. The team had to make a stop.

The ball was passed around the perimeter twice before the Mets finally attacked. Noah Trevor went up the middle, took the pass, and got around Jamee Meels for a shot on goal. Michonne challenged the shot, but the ball was batted into the air and settled over the bar for a point. Now the Senators were down two - a manageable situation, but a dire one. The team couldn’t afford to lose this game if they wanted to challenge for the playoffs. They already had two conference losses, so a nonconference win was vital to get back on track in the overall standings with three conference games left to play.

“We really need Adama right now,” Tela said. “Someone who the Mets fear the most.”

“But we don’t have her available. I think that we should get the ball to Nuun. She may be hobbled by injuries, but she is still a natural scorer. They have to run out the clock and get in a good shot.”

“Wait . . . am I seeing this correctly?” Tela asked. She got out her optical device to get a closer look.

Down below, Leia Adama, whom had been in sweats the entire game on the sideline, had taken the sweats off to reveal that she had indeed dressed for the game.

On the sidelines, Kyril Lopaki was drawing up a play for his team. “We need to attack the right side of the goal. Overload it so that we can try and slip Nuun or someone else in here,” he said as he drew out the play with his coordinators.

The whistle blew for the players to get back in position for the kickoff, but something caught the corner of Lopaki’s eye. He knew that figure . . .

“Adama! What the hell are you doing?” he yelled.

But the star full forward didn’t listen. She had already sent in the signal to her teammates, and Laura Cellen trotted off the field. Adama, despite being visibly hobbled, limped onto the field. This set off a chain-reaction of applause from the home crowd; their star player was going to give it a go when the team really needed her.

“I told them to make sure she didn’t dress!” Briar said, agitated at the sight. “You know that Declan will get on me for letting his little girl play even when hurt. Jet warned me about this; it’s what happens when your Uncle-in-Law, or whatever his title is, is part of the de facto Second Family of Bakura.”
“If she makes a play and wins us this game, I don’t think you will have to worry,” Tela commented.

The kickoff came, and the Senators settled into their last-ditch offense. On came another attacker in Natasha Ehlers, as Meels exited from the game. That gave the Senators seven forwards to work with. The ball went around the formation, the players trying to find space in the Mets’ defensive scheme. The visiting team had tightened their defense, knowing that the Senators had to score a goal in order to win.

    45 seconds remained.

Adama found herself in a tough matchup, and she was still in pain from the injury. It was not an easy play to make without being fully healthy, but she had to make it. She pushed away from the defender to make room. The ball didn’t go to her, and she got covered up again. The Mets didn’t want to take any chances with her, injured or not. She had to post up to make space for herself, but she could tell that there just wasn’t enough oomph in the tank to do that. The pain was still there.

Bergal Rotramel held the ball for the Senators. He wanted to pass, but no one was open.

    Twenty seconds remained.

Adama finished her breath before taking off. Pushing off on the turf was difficult, but champions played through the pain. She got open as Rowdy Roosey cleared out space for her in front of the goal. Rotramel saw the play and made the correct dish. The ball settled in Adama’s hands, and she found Archdres right in the way. Adama stopped before quickly changing course, her foot now in more serious pain with the sudden shift in momentum. Archdres tried to follow, but ran into the defender that had been chasing the full forward. This opened up enough of a lane for one final shot. The ball was out of Adama’s hands in a flash, and it shot past Archdres’ fingertips before settling into the back of the net for three. The home-friendly buzzer went off quickly thereafter.

    Game over, Senators win.

“I don’t believe it,” Briar said, absolutely shocked.

“She’s the captain for a reason,” Tela said. “Amazing.”

Down on the field, Adama’s teammates mobbed her. Injury and all, she had won them a critical game going into the All-Star Break. Half the crowd was in disbelief of what they had just seen, despite it being their team that had won. That was what great Holos were made of, but they had seen it for real.

Several hours after the game, Briar sat watching the highlights on the sports shows. They all talked about how improbable a goal it had been to seal the game. When Coach Lopaki was interviewed, he didn’t have a lot to say. “Letting her play was nowhere in the gameplan. She subbed herself in,” he said.

“Was this a planned scheme, to save Adama for last to surprise the Mets?” a reporter asked Gark S’rily, the offensive coordinator.

“I don’t think I could have planned up that sort of ending,” the Bothan said, a wry smile on his face. “It just worked out for us in the end that she wanted to take over control of the team’s fate in the final minute.”

“Do you encourage your players to make those sorts of decisions?”

“I imagine it’s going to be hard to tell them that they can’t from now on.”

“How big is it to have your team captain come out for that last minute and engineer the game-winning score?”

“It’s huge. We have a chance to keep moving on up in the standings coming out of the Break.”

    “Still watching highlights?” Jet asked.

“Your cousin is a strong player. I just hope that she heals up and can play full-time soon after the Break.”

“I know she’s better than I was,” Jet commented. “I never won an Ingbrand or Salbukk. And I certainly didn’t endear myself to the fans as she has. Now she needs to live up to what her father put down in his career. Who knows, maybe Lukas will someday be the next great Adama to make the Elite League.”

“Jet, he’s three,” Briar said. “Give him time.”

“Are we going to Stewjon for the Break?”

“No, I have plenty to get done here.”

“Good, because I have the exact same problem.”

“You don’t work in a front office,” Briar countered.

“But I do work in an office,” Jet pointed out.

    “Not the same.”

“I had the playing career, you have the management career. We can agree to disagree.”

“Except that I am always right,” Briar said.

“Of course . . . mm hm, sure,” Jet said.

“Don’t make me try to trade you to another woman,” Briar said. “You don’t get draft picks for a husband swap.”

“Don’t worry, you don’t frighten me. Cundertol had the guts to cut me loose, but I don’t think this GM will,” Jet said, pointing slyly at Briar.

“I have to concede that you’re right,” Briar said.

“We can both agree on that one. Finally, I’m right, and you know it.”

    “Frak off.”

    • Union alleges the Starkillers pressured players into signing "unprecedented" contracts
    • Commissioner Lokensgaard says they have heard union concerns and will speak to member teams
    • HSN analyst: "This is everybody just blowing smoke. The union is secretly happy that the Starkillers are trying to protect players, even if they disagree with the methods. They can't just let it slide, so they file a 'written complaint,' which is the equivalent of, 'I'm doing something because I have to instead of the nothing I'm actually doing.' Meanwhile the League says they'll talk to the teams, but they know nothing's going to happen unless the union takes them to court...which the union isn't going to do. Basically, this is everyone pretending like they're making a fuss and doing nothing."

    IC: The Rancor Pitt

"LIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE! From downtown Keldabe, on a sunny and warm Taungsday afternoon. Welcome on into the Rancor Pitt, here on your wave home of the defending Galactic Cup Champion Mando'ade Mercs. I'm Randy the Rancor, he's Justin Pitt. Liz Baker on the boards, with Kitterich on the other side of the glass and oh baby do we have a lot to talk about today."

    "Rough game for the Mercs..."

"It was, it was. You must have hated it with all that offense."

"They really changed things up and sold out, their middies came up and the Mercs just didn't have enough to keep up with them."

"Reminded me of the Glencross days..."

"Yeah, back when they were winnings Cups instead of just playing for them."

"Ouch, though I'm sure Coach Kor'le would agree with you there..."

"That game probably gave her some bad flashbacks to those years."

"I wouldn't mind some flashbacks of Alana Glencross..."

    "You're sick."

    "I know."

"Know what else is sick though?"

    "What's that?"

"Even in a game where the Miner's midfield went full on offense, the Miner's still only allowed 22 points."

"That's not really an only. 22 is..."

"The most they've given up in a game all season. That defense is good."

    "Tops in the league."

"Valerii seems to have found a new formula for them, it's dangerous, but it looks like that's a defense that might not need all that much help from their midfielders, freeing them up to contribute in the offensive zone."

"And that spells trouble for the Solo conference, and the rest of the league really."

"Still oh and two in conference play, and that can come back to bite them in the shebs, but if any team can climb up and grab a playoff spot it's them."

    "What about the Mercs now?"

"Tied with that team from Nal Hutta's Moon, who we just so happen to play next week."

"Meaning The Game of Rivals will have an added significance. Whoever wins that game has the real inside track at a playoff berth."

"Sure, the winner goes to five and two overall, and moves above the .500 mark in conference play, while the loser falls back to four and three..."

"With a losing in conference record."

"And depending on how the Pirates do, they can fall out of their playoff spot."

"Lots at stake, I don't want to say it's a must win..."

"Hard for any team with a four and two record to be playing a must win game at this point in the season."

"...but it's as close as you can get. The fact that it's against our most hated rivals just adds to the drama of the whole thing."

"Well if the ELL does anything well, it's drama."

"At least the Crusaders keep winning."

"Dream season there, and it's their offense that's making all the noise."

"Think any of those players end up contributing on the Mercs in the coming years?"

"Could be, I'm sure there are a couple that could play a role. Have to give them time to grow though."

    "Right, right."

"They were a winless team last season remember. They got hot in the playoffs to win the LFL Championship..."

    "And haven't cooled down since."

"But.. well yeah, so they certainly learned how to lose, and then how to win. But ya gotta see how they handle it when that streak comes to an end..."

    "And it has to sometime."

    "Buzzkill."

"Right. Once it does, how will they respond? Go on another downward spiral, or will they pick themselves back up after a game or two and get back to winning."

"Well I know one thing, it's been fun to watch."

"That it has, that it has. But this weekend, I think all eyes in the sector, shab most eyes in the Outer Rim, will be on the Smugglers and the Mercs. Playoff berths could be on the line here in week seven, throw in the level of hatred these teams have for each other, and I guarantee. Sparks will fly."

    IC: Mihal Ceallaigh
Inky Raven pub, Salis D’aar, Bakura

“I damn near had a heart attack watching the game this week,” Piper informed Mihal.

“I know, the offense looked like its old self. 36 points. That’s power offense limmie for you right there,” Mihal agreed. “You could tell they wanted to really take it to the Mercs after the past couple of Finals. It wasn’t a bloodbath with the Mercs putting up 22 points, but whenever you go over 30 you’re making a statement for sure.”

Piper rolled her eyes. “Not that game. Nobody cared about that game,” she said dismissively. “I’m talking about the insta-classic that was the Coruscant-Stewjon game. Those Mets were hungry to turn their season around.”

“Doesn’t it say something if a team that’s just barely one step ahead of the Bucs took the Senators to the wire?” Mihal asked mischievously.

“This is the ELL. Any given Primeday, my friend,” Piper intoned solemnly. “Any given Primeday. But where was I? Oh, right. That Adama goal. So gutsy. So much heart. It’s got to be the greatest goal in the history of the ELL.”

“Well there was the Cup-winning goal Reina Kether scored in--”

“Abupbupbupbupbup,” Piper shushed Mihal. “Greatest. Goal. Ever. Beings are going to tell their grandkids about that goal. Nobody just walks onto the field injured and scores a buzzer beater like that. Nobody.”

“Leave it to a Bakuran to come through in the clutch,” Mihal grinned.

“Oh yeah? How’d the clutch work out for you in the last three Finals?” Piper retorted with a smile of her own.

“I was referring to the All-Star Week,” Mihal said. “They had a good showing.”

“Not in the Rising Stars Challenge. Blake and Adiims got hammered.”

“Blake hasn’t played at all this season. It was to be expected,” Mihal reasoned. “Adiims was a bit more surprising, but this was her first full game of her career. She hasn’t had starter duties yet. But look at Jordan on the other side of the field. She’s a second year starter for the Miners and she helped lock it down. That’s a big statement.”

“Mihal, have you considered getting a job coaching? I mean, these theories you have. Players who play more get experience and are better for it,” Piper said sarcastically, but playfully. “That’s a revolutionary idea!”

“You’re lucky I’m so naturally amiable that I know you’re joking,” Mihal replied.

“Nah, I think the Miners should fire Valerii and hire you,” Piper insisted. “But I gotta say, I think Pic needs to defend her Longest Score title again.”

“I think she’s the first being to ever win the same event twice,” Mihal observed.

“Oh come on. The conditions were so wild. There should be an asterisk on that record. Give the field a calm day and there’s no way that she would have won.”

“But she still put it in under tough conditions. I’d say she deserved the win.”

“With a bajillion asterisks on it.”

“You know who didn’t have an asterisk? Falene Trieste. What a performance. I was a bit surprised Penn didn’t have another go at it,” Mihal said.

“I think he’s still catching his breath from last year,” Piper kidded.

“Everyone forgets that Falene’s the most experienced defender the Miners have,” Mihal said. “She’s not huge, but she makes her tackles and she’s smart.”

“She had to be to beat out my girl Gamble,” Piper said. “It was a heck of a race between them.”

“They entered the League pretty close to each other. It shows that defense is a position where experience gives you a clear benefit,” Mihal said.

“Absolutely. That’s why the Senators are going to win the Cup,” Piper said.

“Comstock nearly won her challenge too,” Mihal said.

“Go figure Dac would play spoiler,” Piper said, clearly not surprised.

“Another testament to the fine season’s she’s having. A real bounceback from a tough Final,” Mihal said.

“Of course, your golden boy Joff couldn’t quite keep up with Syndulla. The god of lightning himself,” Piper said proudly.

“That was exciting to watch. I’ll give it to your man. He’s a great all around player.”

“And that’s why we’re going to win the Cup.”

“When it comes to storylines, Morgan Alesh has got to be one of the biggest from the All-Star Game,” Mihal observed. “She finishes last in the accuracy contest, which had to be disappointing.”

“You know I heard a rumor this might be her last season and that’s why the Miners nominated her to participate,” Piper said.

“Well if it is, she’s going out with a bang. She comes off the bench to start throwing points on the board like mad in the second half of the game and gets named the MVP. Amazing,” Mihal said, shaking his head. “She didn’t look like a player who’s thinking of retiring in that game. She looked like she’s got a lot of years left in her.”

“I hate to say something nice about the Miners, but I don’t think Comstock got enough credit for her performance. She has a rocky start and then locks it down to close out the first half,” Piper said. “Even I was impressed.”

“Do my ears deceive me? Did you just say the Miners were impressive?” Mihal asked, his eyes glinting.

“Hey, it’s only because Leia Adama tuckered herself out beating Stewjon. If she’d been healthy she would have dropped like 60 points and Alesh would have been passing to her.”

“You know that the Miners walloped the Mets this season, of course,” Mihal said with a smile on his lips.

“Are you trying to undermine the Senators’ achievement?” Piper asked indignantly. “I believe the Miners have lost all the close games they’ve been in this season. You know who wins close games? Champions? Who won a close game this weekend the Senators? Ergo, transitive property, the Senators are going to win the Galactic Cup this year.” It seemed like there was no shortage of reasons why the Senators were going home with the ultimate prize. “And they take the next step to making that happen this week.”

“Who are they playing this week?”

Piper grinned from ear to ear. “Only the greatest…”

“Of course they are,” Mihal sighed, knowing where this was going.

“...the amazing…the unparalleled...the glorious...the jewels of the Galactic City…the Coruscant Senators!” Piper exclaimed, putting her arms in the air in anticipation of victory. “And when they win this week they’re going to move into playoff position and the Miners’ season will effectively be over with three conference losses. It’ll be the best week EVAR.”

“You really think a team that’s in the bottom third of the league in scoring is going to be able to crack the Miner defense?” Mihal asked.

“You don’t have to beat the Miner defense. You just have to stop the Miner offense. Look at every game the Miners have lost this season. I’d know. Working here I’ve been forcibly subjected to their games. It’s clear as day. If your so-called ‘power offense’--” She even used quotation marks with her fingers to communicate her skepticism, “--gets stopped, sure, the defense buckles down, but not enough. The team runs off offense. That’s their bread and butter. If the offense isn’t working, the rest of the team doesn’t perform at full capacity,” Piper explained.

“I disagree. It’s all about Valerii’s midfield scheme,” Mihal riposted.

“The midfield is overrated,” Piper replied. “It’s just two beings. They’re never going to tip the game.”

“Take this game. All season long Valerii’s had the midfielders in a defensive set. It’s been a reaction to losing the Finals by big margins and not stopping the Merc offense. She’s used them as de facto extra defenders and it’s mucked up the attack. She’s effectively played nine in her half of the field and made it near impossible for teams to drop huge points on the Miners,” Mihal said. “Well, I say ‘her,’ but she’s really doing this in concert with Hulu, who everyone knows runs the defense. He should probably run an entire team, but until an ELL team offers him a head coaching job he’s going to stay with the Miners. Without him Valerii would be lost. She understands midfield, she understands forward play, but she can’t wrap her head around the defense. She needs a strong defensive coordinator.”

“Would you hurry this up? I’d like to hear your point before I turn 50,” Piper interjected sarcastically.

“Right, of course, just pour me another pint and we’ll get there,” Mihal said with a smile. Piper rolled her eyes, but complied. “Now, Valerii’s sat back in this defensive shell for the last five games. It worked brilliantly for the first two games, but then she got into trouble in the last three. Mind you, not huge trouble--just a little trouble. She was losing by a little, but not a lot.”

“Like I said, champions win close games,” Piper repeated as she put a pint of beer in front of Mihal.

He took off the top of it before continuing. “So Ryi Kor’le thinks she knows what the Miners are going to do. The Miners are going to overload the box. They’re not going to give Fu Arock enough room to make his pecs dance.”

“They should put that on the Holonet,” Piper sighed. “I could watch it for hours.”

“What do the Miners do? They break out from the start with midfielders in aggressive attack. They do the exact opposite and instead of trying to contain the Merc attack they overwhelm the defense and pound away fast and hard in the forward zone. It’s a quick strike, shock-and-awe offense. The Mercs can’t stop them,” Mihal expostulates. “Now, Valerii is leaving the defense open by doing this. In fact, she’s daring Kor’le to try to beat her in a shootout.”

“Because that totally worked in the last Final. And the Final before that,” Piper pointed out, relishing her chance to inject some mischievous sarcasm into the conversation.

“This time Valerii’s got the edge. She’s playing a seven being rotation in the backfield,” Mihal explained. “I have to hand it to Cundertol--Stephana Adiims is a beast on defense. She’s got the reflexes of a nexu, hands like a mynock’s mouth, the speed of an eopie, and the toughness of a dewback’s skin. Valerii played her everywhere but full back in this game for a few minutes here and there to give players a rest and keep the defense fresh and it was fully needed. The Mercs had so much offensive zone time because of the fast scores the Miners were pulling that the defense had to be hot all game.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Piper cut in, “but how about we get back to the part where the Miners lose this week to the Senators?”

“Ah, now that won’t be happening,” Mihal said. “Valerii’s going to roll right through Senators Stadium.”

“That might be what’s happened lately, but let me tell you: these Senators are different,” Piper insisted. “They got the Commissioner’s Trophy hump out of the way last season. They no longer have to obsess over that. And this game means a lot to this team. They are too good to not have won more games in the Showdown. They’re so overdue. Like that xenobiology-book-I-got-from-the-library-sophomore-year-of-college overdue.”

“Gaeriel Valerii has always known how to play the Senators. You know what her record is against them?”

“No, but I have a feeling you’re going to tell me.”

“Actually, I was really hoping you’d know because I haven’t the foggiest,” Mihal replied.

“Oh that was a serious question?” Piper asked with surprise. “Let’s see what the datapad says...what year did Valerii start coaching the Miners?”

“271. Don’t forget she sat out 283 with the strike and all,” Mihal reminded her.

“Okay, 271, but not 283...one, two, three...seven, eight...what the Force? She’s won 11 games against the Senators? That’s ridiculous.”

    “How many has she lost?”

“Ummm...5. 11 and 5? Are you joking me?” Piper asked rhetorically in disbelief. “That’s not even counting the two wins in 283 under Stonlon.”

“It’s been a good run for Valerii for sure,” Mihal agreed.

“Well we’re getting another one back in the side of right this year. Mark my words,” Piper said. “Senators aren’t just going to win, they’re going to win big and at the end of the season we’re going to look back on this game and know that the Senators ended the Miners’ playoff chances. Freya Stormhelm shall be the one who writes the final chapter of the Miners’ season--and in Week 7 no less. So it shall be for so it is written.”

“Bet me a beer on that?” Mihal asked.

“Heck no,” Piper retorted. “I’m never, ever giving you a free beer, even if it’s a bet payout.”

    “Ah, suit yourself,” Mihal said.

“I’m really just cheating myself of a beer, though,” Piper said, “because the Senators are going to win.”

    “We’ll see,” Mihal said happily. “We’ll see…”

    • League had been in talks with Euceron about hosting Final Week activities on Euceron since early in the construction process.
    • Commissioner Lokensgaard on Euceron for grand opening: “We are thrilled to bring Elite League Limmie back to Euceron, a planet with a long and storied limmie history. More than that, it is our honor for the first ELL game to be played in a stadium named for a Hall of Famer to be the Galactic Cup Final.”
    • HSN analyst: “The League loves getting to break in a shiny new stadium. The fact that they’re taking their marquee event to Euceron without them even having an ELL team is a big statement for them. They put a high premium on new stadia. Consider that the Miners with a stadium that was built in 220 and hasn’t been renovated since 246 hasn’t had a Galactic Cup since then. The League loves gleaming venues to fit their image as the premiere sports league in the galaxy.”

Ryan was knee deep in planning his first ever wedding. Having one of his clients pulled away to participate in the Stars vs Elites game during All Star weekend didn’t slow him down. It was an honor we were all proud of to have Caffrette represent the Starkillers on the Elite team.

Coaches Allin and Dash agreed before All-Star weekend to keep the number of players we sent to the events limited this year. In the past we’d filled the Skill Challenge events with as many representatives as we could. The fans had players to cheer for, our team got the recognition we deserved and the players enjoyed showing off their talents. This year was different than years past though. The Starkillers had an excellent record going into the break and a legitimate shot to make the play-offs.

The Starkillers were right in the thick of a very tight race and wanted to take no chances in losing ground. Keeping more players home meant more players got rest. Andres and Noah volunteered swiftly to participate in the skills challenges. Everyone in the organization believed the two stars would be chosen as All-Stars so when the roster was released and Noah was left off completely, not even a reserve, it was to say the least a shock.

Noah took the snub well. He planned to use it as fuel to come back and obliterate offenses during the second half of the season. He also agreed to follow through with his commitment to participate in 3 of the Skills Challenges despite Horst Penn’s disastrous outcome last year when participating in multiple events.

Olidiipo was awarded a reserve position on the All-Star squad. A huge honor for a rookie and also a starting spot on the Rising Stars squad. Jimsey was so excited about his idols accomplishments that he was beginning to talk about playing Limmie himself. After seeing Ty’s brain holos a week ago I wanted to say no. As a team owner I could only imagine how bad that would look. I decided to let him play flag Limmie. Practice would begin in two weeks and Jimsey already had his gym clothes set out for the occasion.

We used the All Star game and the festivities leading up to it as an excuse for extra family time. Ryan and I took Jimsey and Shannon to Lucie and Ty’s for the Rising Stars vs Elites game. It ended up being disappointing for Jimsey and Olidiipo. It was a blow out in favor of the Elites. The children fell asleep and the adults enjoyed conversation. We discussed signing up Jimsey for flag Limmie and Ty said he’d been considering letting T.J. play. After that we talked about vacation ideas, watching each other’s children for weekend get-aways and even where we got our hair done.

The skills challenge took place during the afternoon. We rented a back room at a restaurant where the kids could buy tokens and play games. I sipped a low carb ale as Andres Fortune took a shot into a goal and the wind carried his ball out into the stands. Andres laughed it off with the other participants as their balls also sail away from the goal. Jolla Pic was the only contender to score at all.

Noah didn’t really make a good showing in any of his events, but he didn’t come in dead last in any event either. Our hero was young Olidiipo who won the Shooting Accuracy event. This kid was going to make an awesome ball player for years to come. The Starkillers were so lucky to have him and I had my son to thank for swaying me to draft him.

The final event was the All Star game. The first half was surprisingly low scoring. The second half an all out, shoot out. Fortune and Olidiipo put points on the board along with every other offensive player in the game. The kids were wound up after that game. All the scoring and sipping of Ty’s fizz behind his back had them running around well into the night.

Our hero’s came home to a small crowd at the spaceport. They came out in the dead of night with signs cheering. It was great to see our fanbase so supportive and excited about their team. We had a huge match up against the Demons this week. A game that could knock us right out of play-off contention. I did my best not to let on, but I was nervous. As we pulled up to tail gate that Sunday morning my palms were sweaty.

    IC: Harron Myrat'ur
    Finch's Apartment, O'Pahz, Carratos

The alarm woke Harron at a reasonable hour but, he’d gone to bed at a decidedly unreasonable one. After the loss to the Senators he’d gone out and played more than a few hands of sabacc in some of the places he shouldn’t go. His week passed by him in a haze, playing game after game. He can’t remember if he’d won more than he lost, though he does remember having a good time.

He only managed to crack open one eye his right arm flailing about trying to silence his alarm. Eventually it stops but, not by his hand. His other eye opens and he sees a small form standing next to his bed in the spare room of his brother’s apartment. A little hand rested on the snooze button for his chrono.

“That means it’s time to get up Uncle H.” Finch’s youngest daughter Gale said. They called him Uncle H because apparently Harron was too hard for the little ones to say when they first visited. Now he was stuck with it.

Gale was a preconscious six year old, already able to make caff in the mornings and, operate an alarm chrono. Her eyes were greenish her hair brown, maybe chestnut, it was hard to tell depending on the light. Harron snorted rubbing his tired eyes.

“Thank you Gale, I know that.” He groggily murmured, “I would just like to sleep a bit more.”

“Nope,” she retorted, “Daddy says you need to go to work.”

“Does he now?” Harron sat up in the very simple bed.

    “Uh Hum.” She nodded forcefully.

“Well, to your father that, I’ll get to work, after I get a little more rest.”

“Nope,” she said again, “This is you punishment for staying out past bedtime.”

“Gale, I’m an adult, we don’t have bedtimes.”

“Well you should, you wake up less cranky.”

“Cranky, that’s what you think this is?” he let out a sigh, he was losing an argument with a child, exactly how he wanted to start his morning. “I’m just tired.”

“You’d be less tired if you went to bed when I did.”

He stifled a laugh, of course, her logic was undeniable, he was caught. “Did you at least make caff.”

    “Yes.” She said with pride.

“Good, do you think you could make me a cup?”

“Daddy says I shouldn’t enable you.”

“Do you even know what that word means?”

“It means help you be lazy.”

“Well you would be enabling me to get ready for work faster.” He had turned himself so that he sat facing his little wake up call. “And your daddy wants me to get to work right.”

    “Uh Hum.”

“So do you think he’d want you to help me get there?”

She thought about it for a long time, her small mouth souring as she continued to think. She furrowed her brow and Harron knew he had her. Then he felt a little wrong for conning his niece into getting him his morning caff. However, she was the one forcing him to get up the least she could do was help him.

He showered quickly and got dressed even faster. Walking out of his room Gale greeted him with a go-mug.

“So you can get to work faster.” She said standing on her toes to hand it to him.

He took the offered caff rubbing his niece on the top of her head as he hurried out the door. As he left he felt something was off. He couldn't quite put his finger on it but, something was different and not in a good way.

Nearing the Colosseum the assistant coach felt a rumbling in his stomach. He'd forgotten to ask his diminutive taskmaster if he could have breakfast. There was a caff shop on his way so he stopped by to pick up something. After getting through the long line, it was the breakfast rush, he ordered a simple sandwich with egg and meat on it. The total was given and as he reached into his pocket, he found it, empty.

    No credits nothing.

"Uh…" she started patting himself down struggling to find at least some money. He always kept his credits with his other responsible things, his comlink, which was in his other pocket, and identification card, in his back pocket. Why didn't he have his credits? He gave a nervous laugh as he continued to search fruitlessly for money to give to the lady now nervously smiling on the other side of the counter.

"I got his." A voice said out of nowhere. "And a large caff." Harron looked to his savoir from more embarrassment. They had short blonde hair and brown eyes, an athletic frame and wore a black t-shirt.

"Leigh." He replied surprised that the star player would just suddenly appear. Looking behind her there were several people taking pictures. While there was no official 'Face' of the Pirates, though an argument could be made that she was it, many of the residents would recognize the star forward. She smiled with the side of her mouth and paid for Harron's breakfast and her own drink.

As he took the edible from the young woman behind the counter, her eyes now star stuck, Leigh gestured to a table towards the back of the space.

"So you remembered your caff but, forgot about breakfast?" Leigh started sitting across from him.

"Well, I had a very forceful six year old pushing me out the door this morning."

"Oh," she said quietly taking a sip of her caff, "I didn't know you had a kid."

His eyes widen, "Ah…I…I…don't" he stammered, "She's my niece, my um…living arrangements are a little…familial right now." He was silent again, her eyes were turned away, was she embarrassed for him. "It's temporary, had some…financial difficulties. I'm getting them sorted."

"It's alright. I…" her lip quivered again,

"If you got something to say…" he countered

"What?" she shook her head maybe a little taken off-guard.

"You've got a tell." He tapped his bottom lip, bring attention to it.

    "No I don't."

"Not when you're playing sabacc but, when you've got something to say your lip quivers."

She looked away again, eyes casting about the shop, pictures were still being taken, and the patrons were whispering among themselves.

"Maybe later, when there aren't so many eyes." He cast his gaze around, it seemed they were the most interesting thing in the shop. Even the staff were casting glances their direction. His first thought was that the tabloids were going to have a field day with this.

'Assistant Coach and Star Player: Love on the Pitch.'

It turned his stomach just thinking about it. Then for no apparent reason he thought of a line from an old holo,

"Those shots came nowhere near my tabloids."

He must be tired, or just not reacting well to the caffeine in his system.

"Something funny?" Leigh asked taking another sip.

He let out a breath, "You wouldn't find it funny. It's a quote out of context."

"Ok, suit yourself." They were quiet after that, just letting the time pass. A patrol of CDF soldiers stopped in grabbing some caffs to keep themselves alert. A reminder that the ghosts of the past were still very much a problem in the present.

Soon time had fully passed them by, never finding the time to speak alone. It was time for the Mariners game. Leigh had buckled down, practicing hard with the rest of the team. This season was not going their way and the team wanted, and their home needed some good news. The attacks were getting worse. Every day all across the planet more and more defense force soldiers were dying, falling to 'White Star' bombs.

Once again Harron found himself standing in front of the memorial wall. He was trying to settle his nerves he wanted to win this game to at least keep the hope of the playoffs alive, to keep some kind of hope burning. There he saw the young pantoran, the one with the white streak in her hair.

"Hello again." he said trying to strike up a conversation, if only to take his mind of his own troubles.

"Hey." She replied turning her attention towards him.

"Looking for a bit of peace?"

She huffed just a little, looking away, "Peace."

"Yeah, it seems a little hard to find these days."

"There will be peace. One day." She said somewhat solemnly.

He cracked a smile, "That's the spirit, never give up hope." His words were strained by his ball of nerves resting in his chest.

She gave him a look that seemed to hold so many words, yet gave none of them away. It seemed his week for women giving him knowing glances but, keeping their mysteries to themselves.

He coughed into his hand, breaking the moment, "Well, I'd best be getting back to it." He began walking away, and she said nothing, though he could feel her gaze lingering on him.

The game, well, hopefully it was the point everything turned around. Leigh played like a woman whose life depended on winning. Every play she drove towards the net, assisted by Tian or by Cutty on either side of her. She was once again the engine that pushed the offense, and the team to victory. Not to say the defense slacked off. The 'Bruising Beauties' held down the half forwards pretty well but, all the energy seemed to be on the other side of the ball. The crowd ate it up, cheering every chance they got, singing their favorite songs.

It felt good to see the team like that, energized and fired up. Also winning, winning felt really good. Maybe it was his gambler talking but, he loved the feeling of winning. Afterwards the team wanted to go out but, Leigh decided to call it early, she wanted to rest, maybe get an early start on next week practices. Even her best friends couldn't dissuade her from going home after the game. She'd just scored four goals in a game, with a few assists on top of that, it was worthy of celebration. Yet she turned in for the night.

Harron himself decided to go back home, lest he incur the wrath of a certain six year old. He surprised the little girl by arriving early and going straight to bed.

"Harron." His brother called out, waking him from his sleep. He got up, strangely refreshed, he hadn't really felt like this before, well at least that he could remember. He made his way out to the front room where he passed his brother.

"We're going to talk later." Finch said through gritted teeth. What was his…

The thoughts stopped when he saw a figure standing in the open doorway, a bulky frame with a broken nose, emblazoned on his hand, a white howlrunner.

    "Hello again." he rumbled.

Harron's heart dropped, what had he done.

    Six Boroughs, Nar Shaddaa
    The Game of Rivals

Fireworks exploded in the upper deck in a brilliant flash of light and sound leaving a hazy, smoke filled interior behind. Massive fans engaged to vent the smoke out into the urban sprawl. The jaw dropping sound of the fireworks reverberated throughout the sold out stadium, jam-packed with 750,000 beings of various races and genders, who had come to see the annual tilt between the Mando'ade Mercs and the Nar Shaddaa Smugglers known to all limmie fans as The Game of Rivals.

Addison had never been to, arguably, the greatest rivalry game in the Skywalker Conference. The energy was absolutely intense, smothering, deafening, and filled with an eager anticipation of what was to come. She had taken the time to research the twelve year old rivalry, going all the way back to 274 in the days of Beskaryc Taab and Kaitlyn Vehn. Two owners who held mutual animosity toward one another.

The rivalry had been back and forth during those early years. Neither team dominating in a particular fashion. It had only been since the early 280s that the Mando'ade Mercs, coming off fresh championship appearances, had begun to dominate the rivalry. Simply put, Nar Shaddaa just didnt' have the pieces or players in place to challenge the Mercs for supremacy of the Skywalker and had fallen behind.

Addison knew that this year felt different and that this particular game had enormous implications for the power struggle going on in the Skywalker Conference. Both teams had equal records across the board but the history of these two franchises, in this decade, had taken drastically different paths. The Nar Shaddaa Smugglers had failed to keep up their dominance of the 270s by the time the current decade had started. The loss, at home, in the 282 Galactic Cup Final to Ralltiir had shattered the illusion of Smuggler dominance. The Mercs, conversely, had peaked and won back to back championships in recent years and looked to be a major threat down the stretch.

"Please welcome," the announcer said, "your NAR SHADDAAAAAAAA SMUGGLERSSSSS!!!!"

The roar from the crowd was deafening. Ear drum shattering. Awe inspiring.

Addison flinched as more fireworks erupted from the tunnel as the entire team ran out onto the field wearing their home jerseys. The ones that were black and burgundy. The ones that had once garnered, and still could, fear and respect from other teams. She watched as the team psyched themselves up for the game. Shady Lerouex was trash talking, Erin Windreaver looked determined and focused, and Helen Ripley started to settle into the goal as she rallied the defense to her cause.

Addison watched as Erin Windreaver met her counterpart, Argo Mor'kesh, at midfield. The two jawed at one another, there was some shoving, a few errant swings, as the refs intervened to break up a fight before the game even started. The crowd ooed and awwwed expecting blood, expecting severe violence. Nar Shaddans loved to be entertained. Addison remembered suddenly that these two hated one another. It was a visceral feeling. She half expected to see the rotting hand of Kaitlyn Vehn shoot up from the midfield logo and pull Mor'kesh to a dark, muddy, worm infested grave.

The whistle blew. The bolo flung high into the air. The game started. Addison didn't want to miss any bit of it.

    Home

Just because Briar didn’t show up to Stewjon in person to witness the All-Star Weekend did not mean that she would miss the events on the Holo. After all, players from her organization were littered throughout the event; Syndulla, Wren, Montego, Gamble, Michonne . . . all would be at the events and participate for glory against the best the rest of the league threw at them. It was the ultimate prove-it challenge.

The Rising Stars Game was over almost from kickoff. Wren’s team, the Elites, throttled the Stars with a 32-6 victory. Wren had looked better against a team of fellow young players; she still needed work on her offensive game, but that was what a rookie season was for. She was lucky that the Senators didn’t expect her to win games right out of the gate. That role was reserved from the Adamas, Nuuns and Montegos of the roster. She would have her time in the sun; it just wasn’t time yet.

Montego was decimated in the Longest Score Challenge, but so was everyone else. The wind seemed to be playing a major factor out there, and there was nothing to do about it. Something told Briar that the ratings for that event would be atrocious.

The Skills Challenge was incredibly interesting and frustrating at the same time. Zeus Syndulla somehow edged Carlotta Tian of the Mets in the Skills Challenge segment, beating the Rodian out by less than a second. The gregarious Syndulla took the post-event interview as a chance to brag about how awesome he was.

“Ka-chow!” he yelled at the stands prior to the interview, when he had been handed the trophy for the event. It was the first time a Senator player had won a Skills Challenge event, so it meant that much more. There had been some close calls in the past, but none had gotten over the hump until now.

“What a braggart,” Briar said to herself when she watched the midfielder take his victory lap. But she knew that the Twi’lek was a major key to her team’s success, and he was just having fun. It was in his nature to be this way.

Gamble went down in her event, losing out by a whisker. It was a tough loss for sure, but the veteran shrugged it off to the best of her ability. She had come close like that before and lost, so it was not a new feeling for her. It also reminded Briar that there were three more seasons of Gamble after this year before her contract was up; the idea of the deal was that it would be the corner back’s last contract. Whether Gamble followed through on that or not remained to be seen, but Gamble deserved to finally get over the hump herself and win. She had only won one playoff game with this team in her time as a Senator, and it obviously weighed heavily on her shoulders. That was part of the reason why Briar had done so much to build this team; winning a Conference Championship or Galactic Cup was not just for her, but for the players as well. Gamble had been the rock on this defense for over a decade, and she was due her signature victory at some point. The only question was if that could be accomplished in the next three-plus years.

Michonne bombed out badly in the Goalkeeper Challenge, which was the last event of the Skills Challenge gauntlet. It also meant that the All-Star Game was coming up the next day.

The Game itself was slow early, but both teams came out firing after halftime. Gamble was shredded on defense, but so were all the defenders for both teams in the second half. The Solo pulled the win out, but it hadn’t been easy by any stretch of the imagination.

Now it was on to the Senatorial Showdown with Bakura. It was the Senators’ last home game of the season, so they wanted to go out with a bang at home before trekking out for four straight road games to end the year. They needed a win badly to get a conference victory and also make up ground to the Monarchs and Starkillers ahead of them. There was also incentive to snap the six-game losing streak to the Miners, something that had been a problem in the past few years with consecutive playoff defeats. It was time to reverse that losing skid and get back on the correct side of the ledger.
