239 years is a little long to hold a grudge over a breakup, no?

 

You sound like the parents of a child actor who left their clutches and became more successful and actually got to keep their money.

 

This is an oversimplification, but I look at the separation of the United States and Great Britain as a divorce. It featured a lot of argument and acrimony, with a big dispute over who ends up with what, and who owes who what. But, after a good cooling off period, both parties ended up respecting each other, and even liking each other, more than they did when they were unhappily united. Sure, there are a lot of differences, and they're never getting back together, but both parties are on reasonably good terms. It was, ultimately, the best thing for both of us.
