Ender Sai We are about to see how the United States handles the bombing in Mosul that killed 100 civilians. Unlike the Russians, at least we admit it when we screw up.

I dont have any of the facts to be able to talk about this one yet, but it will be interesting to see what is disclosed.

Bazinga'd: Since when has the American government been forthcoming about its atrocities? How many officials have admitted that hundreds of thousands of Iraqis died in the opening years of our invasion (rather than the 10-40,000 figures vomited up during the Bush regime)? Why must we resort to Wikileaks to learn about the routine slaughters perpetrated by our Nintendo pilots? How many news outlets have deigned to broadcast the fact that we dropped 25,000 bombs in 2016?

Russia has a heck of a lot of catching-up to do.

My post was not designed to take a position as to what happened in this particular instance. It was to highlight to Ender Sai, in the context of a previous conversation to see the extent the US is held accountable. At this point I dont have enough information to determine whether an actionable grave breach of international law occurred.

Wikileaks is an instrumentality of Russia-if you solely rely on information coming from them then your basis for your opinion is severely weekend. Similarly, "routine slaughters perpetrated by our Nintendo pilots?" What are you talking about?

Only a small percentage of those 25,000 pieces of ordance actually kill non-combatents. You cant estimate civilian casualties based on numbers of ordiance expended.

One should always aim for weekday credibility. Sorry, credability.

    Yes, please be speific, grdr4.

    Quite, the ordance/ordiance/or dance/danc0r doesn't have a 100% non-cambottent kill rate, rdgr4.

    Oh, wait, I missed:

I guess it's a good job Shakespeare knew his breeches from his breaches when he wrote Henry V.

    Enough.

Well, that's easy, since the US military retroactively defines any combat age male who happened to be somewhere that was bombed as an enemy combatant. Thus, only women, children and elderly are counted as civilians. But since drone bombing missions are usually carried out in peacetime on unsuspecting targets based on conjecture ("we have strong reason to believe so and so person will be at this location at this time"), that is a highly inaccurate way to count civilian casualties.

The definition of enemy combatant is defined in the Geneva convention.

Actually, the language used in the GC is "in times of armed conflict" or "international armed conflict" which can mean something less than a declared war.

In any event, they are not followed by the US when counting civilian casualties in drone strikes. There has been reporting on this. Any fit male above a certain age who was hit is counted as a combatant (i.e. not a civilian casualty) by virtue of having been hit. It's a statistical catch-22.

Bazinga'd: I would recommend reading Jeremy Scahill's The Assassination Complex, which delves into the Bush/Obama drone war apparatus, its victims, and the psychological toll it exacts on entire societies. Make no mistake, this chilling policy will come back to haunt us.

Here's a link to Amy Goodman's interview with said author on Democracy Now!
