But I've been eating burgers before they were black.

The blackness is achieved with squid ink, and it gives it all a fishy flavour that goes rather badly with the beef.

    Hello.

Please do tell, do you "fill out a form" or do you "fill in a form"?

    Don't ponder, just answer.

I fill in a form because my input is required in the empty spaces. How does one "fill out a form"?

Yes Diggy, I am pondering. I'm sorry.

I've almost always been told to fill out a form in most places here in the US.

    No you don't.

The form exists. It does not need you to embellish the fields there; to create new sections and subsections. It is not rendered incomplete as a template. You fill it in. You are presented with something that requires you to add to it.

    Let's talk about this though:

Memes like this exist off the back of the fact that people who are incredibly wrong think van Gogh is pronounced "van go". If you think this, congratulations, you are one of those people for whom wrongness is a constant companion!

    Here it is properly:

Anglicised it would be "van Goff," if you must.

Don't get me started on how I've heard people pronounce gouda as "goo-da". Just... no.

I know I fill in a form, just as large person would fill out a small sweater. In my experience I've been told for most of my life to fill out a form just as Juliet316 mentioned above. Sure it may be wrong or sound wrong or it's a regional thing, but I was just answering @Diggy's question.

Anyway, fill in/fill out doesn't really bother me. What does bother me is when people leave out their linking verb. These dishes need washed vs These dishes need to be washed always catches my ear and sounds wrong.

It starts with one ******** giving his idiotic opinion on spellings; moves to dropping adverbs ("This year went by so fast") and verb tense ("That's so cliche."), and now arrives at that monstrous error of a sentence you describe.

What manner of beast would say " These dishes need washed"?

I've heard "These presents need wrapped." I think it just comes down to laziness. In Philly, there is the word jawn which is a person, place, or thing. It's like people calling pizza - za.

I also blame Rachel Ray for making delicious into delish.

i imagine it's something like "van goggah".
i can't really fault people over their pronunciation (or even spelling) of foreign names though. that's how it goes with language, you would have to blame the human brain.
vincent van gogh's family roots appear to be from the german town of goch. if we're going to be purists, we'd all have to pronounce it like that. which sounds closer to how americans pronounce "van gogh" than how the dutch pronounce it.

It's like they stop halfway through whatever attempt at Gogh they made. "Goff", i.e. the way the English and Australians say it, is a passable attempt at deferring to the Dutch. The American way would be like taking my surname and giving it a hard-G sound, rather than a hard J (Anglicised) or a Y (Dutch/Germanic) as required.

EDIT: Though can we blame the ear-cutting on Germans? I would.

I remember seeing a bunch of German kids in Koln who were well into American hip hop and they all looked like Fred Durst.

Hardly revenge though, pop will (one day) eat itself.

okay; then how about this one. i've noticed that people over here seem to refuse to pronounce Trump's name correctly. it's not that they don't know how to. they just don't want to be shown to spend any effort on him. i've even caught two english teachers doing it.
