It is possible to make this film be okay for older kids (8-12) without catering to them and somehow jeopardizing the core value of the book. It can be done so that things function on multiple levels, heavier stuff goes over kids' heads and registers with adults.

Shrek managed that. I don't know how well it could be done, but it's been done in the past.

It has, and it can be done, but its not easy. Need to have a good director that knows what he's doing.

This is why I am glad Wolfgang Peterson is off the project. I was never convinced he was the right director...

So I just finished Shadow of the Giant and I realized why I had mixed feelings about the book the first time around. While Peter and Petra's stories are wrapped up nicely, Bean's story is not and the series is pretty much his story. So I just felt robbed, because the ending is so "wrapup" but Bean is left unfinished. I know that Shadows in Flight will likely take care of that, but it ain't written yet and it will likely be a few years before it comes out.

The simple fact that Ender kills Stilson and Bonzo pretty much guarantees it has to be PG-13. If they do make a movie, I hope they don't go into the whole discovering the hive queen bit... That wasn't in the short story, because he came up with that stuff when trying to write Speaker, right? I haven't read the original, I'm going to try to find it right now.

I don't see how they would need to do that bit either. IF the film were successful, they could simply use Ender In Exile as a sequel to do that.

You should be able to find the original text in a copy of First Meetings.

Somehow I missed Ender in Exile coming out earlier, so I just now got around to reading it... definitely loved it. Nice how it tied up the open storyline Shadow of the Giant left out there with the last of Bean and Petra's kids, though I didn't particularly care for how Graff basically artificially extended his life so long. The contradictions with the last chapter of EG were fairly minor, IMO, especially since Card has now written a new final chapter that fixes those errors (available online, apparently, though I haven't read it yet - presumably its basically the same thing just with a few fixes)

I've long been disappointed that there was basically a huge gap in Ender's story between EG and Speaker, so this was definitely a very welcome sight.

Yeah I really enjoy it. Reading the entire series in this order really made for a smoother transition from Ender's Game to Speaker For The Dead:

    -Ender's Game
    -Ender's Shadow
    -Shadow of the Hegemon
    -Shadow Puppets
    -Shadow of the Giant
    -Ender in Exile
    -Speaker For The Dead
    -Xenocide
    -Children of the Mind

Oh, definitely. There was also the short story ("Investment Counselor"? I could be off on the title) set between Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead, but this makes the transition much, much smoother.

Yeah I actually read the various short stories in and between as well, but I chose not to list them.

    Very Good.

I think the novel served its purpose....

It was a excellent bridge between the two series.

I cant wait for Shadows in Flight to come out....the story of Beans children who left earth with him.

Has anyone heard any more information about the movie in progress?

Definitely good books. Haven't read Ender in Exile or Shadows in flight yet, but I am looking forward to it. Scott Card is definitely one of my favorite authors.

I checked everywhere and have no earthly idea. Is this typical for Card's new releases? I haven't really followed them in the past. It was always sort of a "Hey, look, there's a new Ender book!" sort of thing for me. :p

    Thanks!

Movie News! Featuring an actor that just might be familiar to us here ;)

Also, iirc, Shadows in Flight is out now.

As superb an actor as he is, I have a hard time seeing him as Graff. But that said, he'll probably do just fine.

If the movie is ever made and finished, at least :p

Hmm, not quite what I pictured for Graff when I was reading the book. Peter isn't how I envisioned him either. The rest though, they are eerily close to how I pictured them in the books. I approve so far, but it might ruin it for me if they keep peter blond.

    Evil.
