Entertainment Weekly puts out "Top 100 fim soundtracks" -- blech

Here's what's apparently the top 10:

10. 2001: A Space Odyssey
9. Purple Rain
8. The Godfather
7. The Graduate
6. Superfly
5. The Wizard of Oz
4. West Side Story
3. Saturday Night fever
2. The Sound of Music
1. A Hard Day's Night.

Yeah. Mmkay...right.

That's soundtracks, not scores. Larger playing field.

I'll give 'em #1, though.

 

Yeah soundtracks includes the ones with songs... I would put Singles in there somewhere though...

I think people do rankings just because they know it's controversial.

 

People don't refer to them as "Entertainment Weakly" for nothing.

 

I skimmed through that list two days ago while seeing it in a bookstore. You know what? Most lists might try to be controversial, but they would also at least try to have some credibility. This is not one of them.

 

If their emphasis was on song soundtracks, then that would be a credible list, as there are some great ones there. But ranking both types of soundtracks like that makes for a messy list.

 

Acually ANH was 26th overall so not too bad but not as good as I think it deserves and it doesn't mention tESB which almost all fans agree had the better soundtrack.

 

To anyone who has the list:

Is Conan the Barbarian on it?

If not, why not? It's easily one of the best soundtracks.

 

"A Hard Day's Night" is a great soundtrack.

 

Okay, I agree with the Godfather and West Side Story, but I HATED the Sound of Music long before I had to be in its pit orchestra. And 2001 wasn't a soundtrack, it was stolen music. I don't think it even qualifies as a soundtrack.

 

Although I've never been a fan of the ESB soundtrack, a lot of people LOVE it, so it probably should have been included.

BTW, DarthIshtar, I hated "The Sound Of Music", too. Three hours of shmaltzy, sugar-coated drek.....

 

"blech" is definitely the correct term for it. I just find it incredibly presumptous to make a list of the "best" anything, and in this case it was messy to put soundtracks and scores together. I read through the article and then grumbled about it for quite a while afterwards. And get this - they put pictures from SW and Jaws on the cover, but both movie scores were pretty well down on the list, so I guess they were just using the pictures to grab people's attention. Blech.

 

I read it at work and it was disturbing. How can ANH not be in the top 10? How can ESB not be in there? How in the world does the soundtrack to Bride of Frankenstein beat out GREASE?
