The news of Episode VII has taken everybody by surprise and with the announced release date of 2015 being only a little over two years away I wonder just when exactly Episode VII is suppose to come out.

Using the prequels as a model filming would begin sometime in late June of 2013 and wrap sometime in mid to late September. Post production would last 18 to 19 months for a May 2015 release date. Every previous Star Wars film has opened just before Memorial Day weekend and the official start of summer.

If Disney was to give Episode VII a traditional summer release date that would put it on either May 15th or May 22nd of 2015, however Disney has already scheduled The Avengers 2 for May 1st. That would only be a mere two or three weeks between what will be the two biggest films of that year. Would Disney do that? Would they move it back to June or July?

Another possibility is Disney will have The Avengers for the summer and Star Wars for the holidays, either November or December. While this would break the tradition of summer Star Wars movies it would give them six more months to work on the film.

Personally I'm hoping for May of 2015.

    Thoughts?

I'm going to go with May, probably the 22nd.
I don't think they'll have a problem putting two of their biggest movies that close together, just so long as they aren't the same weekend. People will go to see both in masses and I don't think being close together will change that.

I think they're going for marking the ten year anniversary of Revenge of the Sith, so that's my guess.

Well how long did it take to film the previous movies? May 2015 would be 2 and half years from now almost. I would rather they didn't rush it. I can wait until Thanksgiving

Honestly, I just don't get how this date doesn't change. We've already got Avengers that summer. And Justice League staking out the summer. Plus the shorter time frame for production on a whole new Star Wars aesthetic.

I think it's safe to assume that they are well into pre production so 2015 seems reasonable.

I agree. I think they've got to be way further along than they are saying to give us a 2015 date, no matter when in 2015 they are aiming for.

Fox chose the May release slot, with Disney at the helms and the Avengers 2 coming out in May 2015, Another Disney film, you can count on it being late 2015, probably July or November, likely the latter. That gives them over 3 years to make Episode VII

It would not surprise me if the art department is well underway and Lucas has probably provided feedback regarding the design aesthetic.

I know that many people do not have much confidence in Lucas as a writer /director, but most people recognize his visual genius.

I certainly hope he has input into the design of 7,8, and 9.

May 2015, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was moved to May 2016.

Episode VII has probably been in early development since late 2010 IMO. The fact they are announcing it now means little, Mark Hamill already confirmed he was approached by GL last August, so it's defiantly not an idea that came overnight.

Is is true that they are aiming for 8 and 9 coming out just a year or two apart? I thought I read that yesterday somewhere?

It'll be May. They've always been May. I would not be surprised if the M&A agreement contains a stipulation that the movies have to be released in May.

I'm sorry but Star Wars should not inconvenienced for nonsensical Avengers - reasons obvious. I strongly doubt a delay.

Agreed. The reason why we have movies like Avengers is because of Star Wars and Jaws. Respect.
