The Empire has been defeated and now there is just unrest in the galaxy. Who is in charge of rebuilding the Republic?

Leadership to create a new Republic should be driven by the Rebel Alliance, but there are always enemies to democracy.

I believe the galaxy will be wide open for chaos and this could be the story of the new trilogy.

Could this chaos lead to underworld agencies such as bounty hunters, illegal trade organizations, etc. trying to obtain the galaxy's leadership?

Maybe Lucas' Live Action Series concept, which was originally developed during the time period between III and IV, has now somewhat envolved to a different time period - post ROTJ?

I agree, I think the most likely scenario is that the galaxy after the fall of the Empire falls into a dark ages. First, that also happened after the fall of the Roman Empire, and some of that was of influence on Star Wars (e.g., Palpatine was partially based on Julius Caesar, so the Empire was partially based on the Roman Empire). Second, similar plots lines can be found in Asimov's "Foundation" and Herbert's "Dune" series, both of which had a major influence on Star Wars. Third, it's hinted at in some of the early drafts of ANH (for instance, the early opening crawls had the line "The EMPIRE is crumbling into lawless barbarism throughout the million worlds of the galaxy").

Yes. Lawless barbarism should definitely be the backdrop. But there needs to be some sort of goal for the heroes to attempt accomplishing that would mean victory against this chaos.

Great - lets have a bunch of factions like bounty hunters, banking clans, techno unions, trade federations all battling for...

Well - of course there has to be some driving force behind the scenes...

    And... oh, woops.

The goal, obviously, would be to re-establish the Republic (presumably a new&improved version of it). There are several (old) interviews with Lucas where he says that a sequel trilogy would be about reestablishing the Republic.

But will this chaos be an interesting story to watch? Because if done in the wrong way, a story about rebuilding a republic of planets could be rather vague and general and boring.

The Rebel Alliance may have to serve as some form of police, going around space and intervening in conflicts between warring groups that have risen up with the absense of proper government.

I'm sure someone's already mentioned this but Black Sun could be a possibility. Black Sun, on steroid to be like a philosophical cult movement, along with Imperial Remnants. And, of course, I want to see the Mandalorians.

Some Dark Jedi leading the Black Sun maybe, trying to find ancient Sith stuff to become more powerful (like Tavion leading the Cult of Ragnos). Could have Mandalorians as allies.

Han could be the general in charge of dismantling all the criminal organizations.

A dramatic goal should be something more concrete than "re-establishing the Republic". Otherwise, as was mentioned above you're gonna have a bunch of scenes of people sitting around and negotiating. "ending the Empire", for example, was represented by the concrete dramatic goal of destroying the 2nd Death Star. You would need something just as concrete to represent the re-establishment of the Republic.

Oh, gotcha. I don't know what goal that would be in that sense (obviously), and I don't really want to speculate on that—I'm just speculating about the setting.

Well the rebel alliance was fully known as the 'Alliance to Restore the Republic', so we can assume the rebels wanted to go back to the way things were, but without the corruption.

Count Yubnub made a good point about the Roman Empire being an inspiration for The Empire, but another inspiration was Nazi Germany and the way Hitler rose to power from Chancellor.

When the Third Reich fell, Germany was split into 2... East Berlin controlled by the Soviets. West Berlin was more democratic. It took decades before the Berlin Wall fell (an the collapse of the Soviet Union) to bring reunification to Germany.

I think there is a good possibility this struggle to restore a torn country back to normality could also influence the way things turned out after the fall of the Galactic Empire. Maybe the Imperial Remnant could play a part this way?

    It's certainly food for thought.

I think this is the way it's going to go.

Luke Skywalker and possibly a small band of Jedi (Leia too) will be trying to get order in the galaxy after the Empire has fallen.

The deal is that the Empire suppressed every corner of the galaxy to its limits. People now just want freedom. But peace is another story. And this is what Luke Skywalker wants.

But it's not easy bringing peace to an entire galaxy!

There will be pirates, gangsters, bounty hunters, and perhaps even new armies/militants trying to take control of large portions of the galaxy, if not the whole thing. These may be the new adventures of Luke Skywalker.

But why do these groups want to take control? Because they would not believe Luke Skywalker that this "new republic" will be better. They might as well just say, "Ha! It was the same type of government that was overthrown by the Sith! Why should we trust a Jedi to bring order?" And if they find out about Vader being a Jedi that's even more difficult to convince a galaxy that the Jedi have what it takes to bring order. (though I believe they do)

The positive side is that the Alliance has the reputation now, of destroying the Emperor and Darth Vader and legions of Imperials. This will work for them. But.... many in the galaxy will not want to be "under control "again. Remember, it is freedom that they want. But perhaps they don't know what kind of freedom they really need.

And this is Luke SKywalker's ultimate goal. And another is not to let the Jedi take over too much or else they will look like they want power only (but they don't). Luke will only oversee that there are no upheavals and attacks of any kind (and there may be ;)) while Alliance officials take control of the real politics.

Then again Episode VII will be set many years after Return of the Jedi and may not deal with this... ;)

    But I think there's a story here....

The trouble with the Empire was that the Regional Governors had control and bureaucracy had been abolished. It'll be interesting to see how things will have developed since ROTJ.

Certainly, we won't be seeing the senate chamber again. At least not the way it was in the PT.

Yeah every regional government can now start carving themselves an empire. That is not even counting Chiss, Hutt and Hapian Forces being able to grab some new territory. Mandalore could certainly get back in the action. Not to mention Pirates and Other underworld members grabbing key assets.
