Do you think Disney are beholden to George's title sequences for the middle episode :

The Empire Strikes Back

4 words with a military advance

Because they did go the way for EP7 : ( Describing a Villain of Hero for the saga )

The Phantom Menace ( Palpatine )
A New Hope ( Luke )
The Force Awakens ( Rey ) ---- The Force Awoke in Her .

????

If so the title will be something like :

'The First Order Invades' ...........
or
'Assault on the Resistance' .........

Looking at this thread, especially how long it's been going, makes me want the title ASAP. It's like the point in a guessing game when you say, "Okay, just tell me."

We know RJ's had it in mind since very early, but that's not much to go on. And given the lack of a starting time jump, I feel like VIII may also break from the precedent of other titles (e.g. starting letters, phrasing).

Agreed. Give us the title. As I have said before, the only reason they probably don't is because the title itself might reveal an important plot point.

Star Wars Episode VIII: Retaliation

• It's simple.
• It describes a military advance.
• It continues the T, R, A sequence

or perhaps these alternatives:
Star Wars Episode VIII: Retaliation of the First Order
Star Wars Episode VIII: Retaliation of the Darkside
Star Wars Episode VIII: Retaliation of the Sith
I kinda like this one:
Star Wars Episode VIII: Retaliation of the Force
The Force Awakens and then it retaliates.

I agree that there's a pattern to naming. For example, first movie doesn't specify an organization or character:

A New Hope

We will learn it's Luke. Hero.

The Phantom Menace

We will learn it's Sidious. Villain.

The Force Awakens

JJ says that the title refers to "the Force awakening in the young woman (Rey) and the Dark Side in the villain (Kylo Ren)." Hero and Villain.

So you can see the pattern clearly. TPM (reference to the villain) mirrors ANH (reference to the hero) while TFA combines them (reference to both).

Second movie specifies a military organization and a military advance:

Empire Strikes Back

Organization: Empire
Advance: Strike Back.

Attack of the Clones

Organization: Clones
Advance: Attack

Now, this is a tricky one because, while Empire is a designated villain, Clones weren't so in AOTC. Theoretically, they weren't heroes but they did act on the behalf of them so we have mirroring again - ESB = military advance by the villain, AOTC = military advance by the heroes (since they lead the clone attack). But it isn't as clean cut as First Movie Title Pattern.

Could EPVIII title refer to both FO and the Resistance?

Third movie title specifies a Force User or side of the Force and action taken:

Return of the Jedi

Force User/Side of the Force: Jedi. Hero.
Action: Return

Revenge of the Sith

Force User/Side of the Force: Sith. Villain
Action: Revenge

Like in the case of the first movie title, mirroring is very clear.

Could EPIX title refer to both Force Users/Sides of the Force?

 

I acknowledge this thread is about the Ep 8 title, but I want to deviate slightly just to comment on your thoughts about the third movie title. What if the Ren, who are neither Sith nor Jedi, actually have a Light Side component to them that we just haven't seen yet? Like there are other Ren who are good hanging around somewhere? That would be interesting both from a dramatic standpoint and from the synthesis of heroes/villains your observing in the titles.
