    In 1977, only George Lucas knew about Star Wars. Only he knew that a saga was about to begin. But not even George Lucas thought that this saga would bring together milions of people and encompass several generations. By 2006, everyone knows about Star Wars, its characters and how it changed the world.

    In 1977, despite bad predictions, a small fan base and limited theater openings, Star Wars was the surprise hit of the year. By 1978, it had grossed more money than Jaws and TIME Magazine had called it "the film of the year." Yet despite all of this, people flocked to the theaters to see Luke Skywalker blow up the Death Star during the infamous Battle of Yavin. They came to see Princess Leia, beautiful and ready to fight and of course Han Solo, the cocky pilot who we all wanted to identify. This is what Star Wars is about, the Characters.

    Unlike most heroes and heroines of the '70s, the characters in Star Wars were based more on mythology and George Lucas's personal life. Luke was the farmboy who rose from humble beginings to become a hero who we can relate to. He also was based somewhat on Lucas's own personal experiences. Han Solo was the cocky, smart-mouthed, hothead who we wanted to be. Chewbacca was based off of Lucas's dog, Indiana, the loyal and faithful companion of Han. Obi-Wan Kenobi was the wise old mentor who was based off of Lucas's own mentors and other literary characters like Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings series. Darth Vader's helmet was based off a Samurai warrior's while his villianous characteristics were from some of the villians Lucas had seen as a child on T.V. serials. C-3P0 and R2-D2 were the comic relief of the movie. In interviews, Lucas had said he based them off two bumbling sidekicks from the Japanese film, The Hidden Fortress. Of course, Princess Leia was the unconventional damsel-in-distress who although had the look of one, was rough and tough and not about to be pushed around. In the
