Hmmm...well, the first EU book I ever read was The Courtship of Princess Leia. I really have mixed feelings about it. Some of it I really liked, other parts really bugged me. Like the deal with Teneniel. She bugged me. And Luke was not Luke in that book.

Han and Leia...so-so. *shrugs* I liked some of it, though.

TTT was all right. It's not everything the Zahnites make it out to be. Luke was too wussified in that and Mara Jade's whining was an annoyance too. The Chiss/Thrawn you might as well put pointy ears on him and call them/him spock.

*shrugs* Mara has always been my favorite character. She had just been displaced from her entire world-everything she'd known had just gone up in smoke. I figured she was entitled to some whining. ;)

Some? Well I guess that coincides with the Imperial motto "Lose something valuable, whine about."

I don't like Vector Prime. And it's not because of Chewbacca's death.

    It was rather poorly written.

Also, Dan, I think the Yuuzies weren't really done justice until later in the series.

It was written really good. What do you mean that the Yuuzhan Vong did not get done justice?

I don't like Salvatore's style of writing. A bit too repetitive for me.

Also, the Vong were simply another group of fanatics with no third dimension.

In SbS, we really got to know our Yuuzies.

And it is in no way better than the X-wing books. [face_plain]

One could also dispute that we really got to learn about the Yuuzhan Vong inner workings with the Dark Tide and Agents of Chaos duologies...

    But I sure as hell won't. :p

I liked Vector Prime, but I liked other NJO novels like SBS and Traitor better.

    Hits:

The Han Solo Adventures - Because they were fun and exciting tales. They also contained the best portrayal of the famous teamwork of Han and Chewie.

The Han Solo Trilogy - Because they were very well-written books that I would have enjoyed even if they hadn't contained the Star Wars label.

Traitor - Because it drew me into the story like Star Wars books rarely truly do.

    Misses:

The Courtship of Princess Leia - I found most of my favorite characters to be extremely unlikable in this book, especially Luke and Leia, it had the worst portrayal of those two ever, and Han was just plain pitiful.

Truce at Bakura - I didn't like the charactizations, I didn't like the villians, and I didn't like the story.

NJO: Agents of Chaos I & II - I love the way Han is portayed, and I love any books ythat focus on Han, he is such a gr8 guy, without him the GFFA would die.
YJK: thought they were great books, even though I never read the last six.

    Misses
NJO: VP, was a boring book and they shouldn't of killed Chewie damnit!
JJK: boring as hell, too much of Anakin complaing about becoming like Vader

    Those are my opionons

Vector Prime had it's good and bad points. I liked the fact that Mara was frightened about not being able to have children, but I'm not sure I like the way the idea was handled.

One of my favorite parts from VP was, though, the fight Luke and Mara almost had right before they landed on Belkadan.

"There might still be people down there," Mara harshly interrupted. "They might even be hearing our call, but unable to respond. So should we just fly away? Back to the safety of Lando's planet?"

"Nothing with Lando is ever safe," Luke replied with a ...feeble attempt to lighten the mood.

"But he does have doctors, right?" Mara said sarcastically. "Because we need doctors."

And then, a few sentences later...

...never, ever, would Mara Jade Skywalker accept condescension. She was ill, true, but would not be treated as if she were incapacitated.

A wonderful characterisation of Mara there.

I also think that Vector Prime did a good job of introducing the Vong. You can't really learn all that much of them in just one book, and this was the first of many. If there wasn't enough about the Yuzzhan Vong here for you, then it was probably just because VP was the first book.

I liked the interaction between the Han, Chewie, and Anakin in this book, too. Very funny and true-to-character.

Why do I consider this book a miss, then?

I hate the way Luke is portrayed as a Jedi Master in this book. In Onslaught, he was portrayed very well; he was forgiving as Jacen's Master, a good husband and a good everything. In VP, he was kind of wimpy all-around. He was a tad in the background, except for a rare time or two, probably. He certainly didn't do anything that stuck in my mind. He just didn't seem like Luke to me.

*shrugs* The bad characterization of one character can ruin a whole book.

i have to disagree about the han solo duology (njo). i'm used to action and lots of it but a lot of description and all talk, gets boring after a time. the only scenethat was really worth while was the duel between archon thane and prince isolder.

i could hear the 'we will rock you' theme in the background and it reminded me of the duel betwen paul & feyd from dune (newer version on sci-fi).
