    Title: Evolution of a Poet
    Author: DWH
    Genre: Poetry
Characters: Skyler Ducharme, Leiraya Moran, Kylan Sheffield
    Timeframe: pre-KOTOR
Notes: Written for the Essential Guide to OCs challenge: We all have to (physically) grow up sometime, and every adult OC was once a child OC. Show us a memorable event from an adult OC's childhood. What made it memorable, either for that same character or for someone else? Was it happy, sad or something else entirely? Did it shape their adult life in any way? I'll grant you, it's a broad interpretation of the challenge. But whenever something inspired Skyler, he wrote a poem about it. So it's more like a collection of memorable events. Or something. Y'all can deal with it! :p :D

Also, More Than Useless might be a good bit of background to have.

    ==================================

    Sunroses are red
    Bellblossoms are blue
    Lieraya likes fruit
    So I do too
    -Age 7

    The Pink Flower
One fine day I saw a flower
    It was beautiful and pink
And every time I see it?s type
I sit right down and think
    Corellia is beautiful
    I love my homeworld so
I can not think of any place
    That I would rather go
    -Age 8

    I Love Swimming
    Swimming is so much fun
    I?d rather swim than run
Or sit out in the sun
    And eat a sticky bun
Though I could eat a tun
    Before the day was dun
    -Age 8

    Star
    Shining so bright
    Twinkling in the night
    A beautiful sight
R [eraser marks; this poem seems to be incomplete]
    -Age 9

    On Visiting my Home City
Though I was born in Coronet
    So far away from here
I've learned to love this little place
    And draw its people near
    The city may be shiny
And filled with places to roam
I still think I'll call Silver Hills
    My very favourite home.
    -Age 13

    Battle Song
    The soft hum of blades
    Spinning, I parry and strike
    Victory is mine
    -Age 14

    Pure Jedi
    The Force permeates
    It suffuses my being
    I am in the light
    -Age 14

    Duel of the Fates
    A dance in the dark
Lit only by red and green
    Which side shall triumph?
    -Age 14

    Query
    Punched hard in the face
Woozy, I fall to the ground
    Are those birds up there?
    -Age 14

A Jedi walked into a bar
Though he did not get very far
    Explosives were lit
    Then after a bit
The whole joint lit up like a star
    -Age 16

    Ode to Leiraya
There is a girl I?ve come to love
    Her eyes sparkle and glow
And I will be there to protect her
    Wherever she may go
When she smiles, my heart is happy
Her hair shines in the light
She is the girl I?ll marry one day
Our lives will be happy and bright
    -Age 16

    Yearning
    Walking, I see her
    She laughs, a silvery sound
    I smile, she sees not
    -Age 17

    Sonnet #24
I love a girl, Leiraya is her name
I think she?s perfect like no one I know
Her hair is such a lovely chocolate mane
Her skin is smooth and flawless like the snow
I love to watch her dance in perfect time
She swirls and laughs, so merrily and free
The way she moves is more than just sublime
It truly is a sight I love to see
The roses that she keeps are lovely, too
But not so lovely as her blushing cheeks
I hardly ever know just what to do
At any time her soft and smooth voice speaks

I know she is quite far beyond compare
In all Corellia she is most fair
    -Age 19

    I Promise
As I leave home, I think
I dream, I yearn for days gone by
    Yet I look forward-
    To those I will protect
    I will return
The Corellian system will know peace
    -Age 20

    Guns fire, sabers clash
    The battlefield draws closer
    I wish I were home
    -Age 20

    * * *

Leiraya blinked tears from her eyes, trying to keep them from splashing down on the sheets of flimsi Skyler's mother had handed to her. "Thank you," she managed.

Mrs. Ducharme nodded. "That last one he sent home with his last letter," she said. "I thought it would round off the collection."

"I never knew he wrote poetry," Leiraya commented,

That was beautiful, Commander. you came within centimeters of actually making me cry for real (which hardly ever happens when I'm reading). I liked the development of the poetry too. You're a far better poet than I will ever be.

I especially liked And I will be there to protect her/Wherever she may go. that was so sweet and sad....

That was very sad, but very beautiful. :_|

    Wonderful writing, as always.

Great story! Before I read this one I went back and read "More Than Useless" like you suggested, which is a wonderful piece of writing in and of itself. Both that one and this viggie made me sad. :( Each is very touching, and they tie together nicely.

I enjoyed "Query", hee hee. ;) I agree, it was neat to see how Skyler's poetry skills progressed, as well as the different subjects that inspired him enough to write the poems about. I think it gave a nice insight into his way of thinking and personality.

    Excellent job. =D=

I really enjoyed this. The poetry at the beginning really showed who the main character of this piece was and how his mind formed. The end was sad, but good.

The evolution of Skyler's poetry was a beautiful touch. ;)

And the ending with her face buried in Kylan's robes was just perfect.

    Wonderfully done DWH!

EDIT: I've already read "More Than Useless", which was fantastic, but you should unlock it so others can check it out and comment on it. Especially since it's so imperative to this piece. :D

...Yay! I made lots of people cry! [face_dancing] :p

Rogue_Pilot: I think you may be on the record as being the first person to ever call me a poet. :p Actually, there's a running joke with my friends that I hate poetry, which is completely untrue, and is the reason this story exists.... so, yeah. Unnecessary author explanations FTW!

Meredith_Kenobi: Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the story.

Thumper: "Query" is also possibly my favourite of the bunch. :) Thanks for reading!

whiskers: Thanks! I was hoping to give a miniature biography by way of poetry, so it looks like it sort of worked. :)

c_ale: As suggested, the old story is now unlocked. :D Glad you liked the companion to the old vig.
