JCC Facial spraying

Guys I'm just going to cut to the chase, I'm thinking of investing in a good can of mace and I want to know what the policies are for self defense using something like that. What are the legal rules etc, and what brands have you found to be the most effective when used against you?

In seriousness though, the mace question is legit.

 

You can be charged with assault if you use it outside of self defense. But remember somebody getting in your face doesn't always means its a good idea to use it. Plus its useless on a windy day cause it can blow back towards you or it could get on someone else and then its assault. Plus when you use it they can get really angry and come after you. Even if they are hurting.

 

There are probably differences between state laws, but I think you're fine when using it in self defense.

I'd recommend the pink pepper spray because nothing works when you gender classify your pepper spray!

To go with the original intent of the thread, the easiest thing to do SLG is to call your local police precinct community affairs dept. (each precinct should have one and should not be like calling 911 and "wasting resources") and just ask them what the local laws/regulations are and if they have any recommendations on brands if it's legal.

To go with the fake intent of the thread: I think that imperial_dork is the proper person to give advice. Or Strilo.

 

I'm glad to see you take self defense seriously given that neighborhood of yours, thread title aside.

Legally you're fine (basically). A woman using it on a man would have to go to some strange extremes to end up in legal trouble, especially when outweighed by a hundred pounds.
Plus as they teach you in SD classes, get out of danger and worry about the ramifications later.

Beez is right, watch out for wind, it can piss them off. Also they might block it with anything handy (garbage, etc.).
Doesn't mean it's a bad idea though, those are just the drawbacks.
If you have to use it, don't show it until you do and get it right in their face/eyes.

As a famed street fighter once noted though, self defense is 99% about staying out of trouble in the first place. If you don't like the look of something, turn right around, cross the street, etc. Predators count on targets not being aware of their surroundings and/or being afraid to look rude (well if I don't get on the elevator with him, or open the lobby door, etc. he'll be insulted).

I'd recommend a stun gun over mace myself but they're more expensive. They also have devices that basically just make a hell of a lot of noise (mobile panic button). I know there aren't a lot of white knights walking around but attackers do not want the attention.

Get an order of protection if he wont leave you alone. Yes he can violate it and make things worse but its a start.

 

I was gonna say, seems like beezels had a lot of experience with mace.

 

You also might want to consider taking a self-defense class. My daughter has a brown belt in karate.

 

Took a self defense class years ago in high school. Learned about the upside and downside of mace. And no haven't been sprayed. But as a kid I was playing with a bottle of cinnamon oil my mom had and opened it up and got some on my hands and then proceeded to wipe my eyes without thinking. It burned bad.

 

SLG is good with her first in the brown too.
