I've heard a report that the crew behind the cave hallucination sequence put in some tips to clue in the attentive viewer that the Vader we see fighting Luke isn't real. First, the breathing sounds different; less filtered and almost more natural. The second part, I can't confirm; apparently, his lightsaber was intentionally made orange in this scene. I can't personally confirm this, because this "error" was corrected early on. But to my knowledge, Vader's saber was always tinged orange in ESB (including the duel on Bespin). Can anyone confirm that Vader's saber was that much more orange in the cave?

For the breathing, here's the cleaned up version of the scene:

I cannot say for certain with Vader's saber, but the breathing is definitely different.

Also, notice that there is no Imperial March upon the vision's appearance. In a film completely saturated with that theme, this is a clue.

Fake Vader moves in slow motion, something that real Vader never does.

I wonder if any such scene will appear in TFA. There are rumors of suited Vader in some kind of scene.

He was Yoda's former roommate. But he rarely paid his half of the rent, not to mention the swamp tax. Yoda banished him to live in the cave. And so when Luke came along, Yoda realized he finally had a way to rid himself of his problem without getting his own hands dirty.

I hear Fake Vader never chipped in for gas, either.

In Luke's defense Yoda phrased it as more of a question

What I'm really looking for is someone who can provide screenshots of the theatrical version of Empire where Vader's lightsaber is shown in the cave, as well as a screenshot of Vader's lightsaber on Bespin to compare how orange it really is, and see the possibility of the change being intentional.

    [face_rofl]

I remember thinking it was Vader the first time I saw TESB when I was nine. I was scared and shocked. I was like, "How did he find him?" Never noticed that the breathing was different, but I noticed the lack of the Imperial March theme in the late 1990s.

I definitely thought it was Vader in 1980 as well. Until the head came off! Even at 11 y.o. I knew it was too early and without much in the way of build-up to kill the main baddie.

Yeah, it would have been random as hell and would have sucked. The vision of Vader wasn't even trying that hard...probably because it was a test for Luke. I'm just a thin girl who doesn't work out that much, and I could have beaten it!

The trailer shows someone holding Vader's melted helmet. That's all I know of it.

As far as I'm aware, the contents of official trailers are fair game to be discussed anywhere. That's how things have always been.

Better than having it be Fake Shemp in the cave, I suppose.

The breathing's different because everything is moving in slow motion.

To me, the fact that it's all in slow motion is indicative to it being a fake Vader. The moment Vader appears, everything goes slow motion, to me this indicates almost a dreamlike moment, that it's not real. The moment it's over and we cut back to Yoda it's no longer slow motion anymore. To me, that's one of the "clues" that it isn't really Vader because there is no other moment in Star Wars (none that I can think of anyway lol) where slow motion is used for dramatic tension, so it suggests that it was used for a specific purpose here.

I think the wampa's arm falling to the cave floor after Luke severed it was slo-mo.

Yup you're right... lol, hence why I made sure to cover me ass with the none that I could think of anyway. However, I still think the slow motion was being used for more than dramatic tension for the scene.

Actually just went back and watched it, it's not slow-mo, it looks weird as it falls (maybe partial slow motion to prolong the shot so people could see what is falling?), but not slow motion for the sense of dramatic tension...
