Anyone know why I can't join the Kings? I completed both "G.I. Blues" and "Hound Dog" and he still says he doesn't approve. Worse, the "favor" doesn't come up in conversation anymore. Did I lose any opportunity I had of ever getting a haircut?

i have never seen those missions.

now i hate to say it but, out side of the monster side and main quests within the vegas strip, this game seems very vacant on side missions. now that i have uncovered most of the map, there really is not much to do outside of the strip

I'm around 50 hours in and I've been so busy with side quests that I haven't even seen the strip yet. Close now, though. I'm in Freside.

When I started playing I just started talking to as many people in Goodsprings as I could. I wanna say I picked up 3 or 4 quests between there and Primm and something like 3 in Novac alone. I also hung around Goodsprings for about three levels or so just to get some skills up a bit so I could get quests like Ghost Town Gunfight. I just keep doing that, cleaning up every town I reach, playing the part of a wasteland paladin until there's nothing left for me to do, then I move on to the next town, rinse, repeat. I've picked up quite a few in Freeside so far, so it'll still be awhile before I touch the strip. What factions are you siding with? I've mostly been sticking with townsfolk and NCR for this playthrough, probably Powder Gangers and/or Caesars Legion next time.

Also, I just realized that part of what's taking me so long is that I'm playing on hardcore. Much better roleplaying experience, imho, but I make less caps because I hoard everything I might someday use as a craft item.

How often do you go places where quests don't tell you to? I've found several areas that no questlines told me to go to yet held a few quests themselves. NCR Sharecroppers, North Vegas Square, Aerotech Office Park, Sloan, Camp Searchlight, etc. I don't think I've ever had any quests that lead to these places yet they all have questsgivers. Explore and go off the beaten path. If you see an hollow triangle on your compass, go check it out!

i've totally decided to go hardcore on my second playthrough and to just stick with straight-up guns as well with maybe a handheld weapons as a tag skill later on down the road. i like all of the gun related perks in this game that weren't around in fallout 3. some of them seem a little silly, but others are right up my alley.

as far as making direct comparisons with fallout 3 goes, i'd have to say that there seems like a little less to explore in this game than there was in 3. though maybe i'm just playing it through differently. the first playthrough (which i'm still on) was sort of a 'get-your-feet-wet' kind of deal for me. and they did get wet, which was hard in the desert. but i like the things i'm hearing about the hardcore mode for the most part. except for the fact that your companions can die and stay dead. though i guess that's what makes it all the more hardcore.

and another thing i've noticed is the guns. holy guns, man! there're like, forty more guns in this game than there were in part 3. i'm a little overwhelmed. i mean that in a good way, but yeah, wow. i'm still a little confused about how they factor the big guns in this game though. they're something i never used any skill points on in fallout 3 and it seems as though they play by a different set of rules in this game. is it just basically your strength + gun skill then? is that the deal? because if that is the deal, then i suppose i could get a kick-ass big gun thing going along with myself too. in that regard i'm glad that they fazed out the large gun skill as an actual area. all they need to do now is combine energy weapons with science and survival with repairing and i'll be a happy man.

I actually like that. Makes me even more careful when I'm cleaning out a dungeon, cuz I don't wanna lose my back up/pack mules. I <3 hardcore mode because it makes the game feel more like a tabletop RPG while losing nothing that makes it just a great video RPG.

I finished my Hardcore, Caesar-aligned runthrough last night. I was a melee oriented character so I didn't have ammo weighing me down but it made the final mission a BEAST. I lost both Raul and Rex to NCR gunfire. :(
My favorite moment though was using the Archimedes II satellite weapon to assasinate the NCR President. (and anyone within 20 ft of him) [face_skull]

i decided to side with the NCR, but i disbaled house instead of killing him and i still got negative karma. anyway its so tough to decide. their is truly no path that is what you would call GOOD. it keeps me from wanting to play alot more. but i would like to take an evil guy and get him there to side with maybe the white gloves or the kings. anyway it's fun, but i need a break

just beat the game tonight in honor of veteran's day. i ended up siding with the ncr and i really wonder how many other ways the game could've turned out. i totally blew house up, but it was more out of curiosity than it was to help support any faction. i am most def playing through on hardcore the next time but i also think i'm going to take a brief hiatus to play dragon age or something like that. after hearing what i did about that game i'm not sure how brief my hiatus is going to be, but only time will tell. it's funny with a game like this. your first playthrough, no matter how long you stick with it, is just mor or less an experiment. you really need to get a feel for the wasteland and what it has to offer. this time i made a basic copy of my best character from fallout 3. he was tom joad. the great hero of steinbeck's grapes of wrath. but, rather than being the hero of the dustbowl, he was the hero of the radioactive wastebowl. i tried do follow in his footsteps with this installment, but it wasn't easy. next i'm going to make james joyce. he will be skilled with words as he is in combat and will focus solely on guns and ammo, rather than the fruity lazers of the future. really, i used to love the laser rifle, but with the DT going on in this fallout, lasers really aren't worth a farthing.

Gonk: Caesar's Legion is nothing like the Romans. Nothing at all. They're an ignorant little caricature, and I've decided that I shall no longer be helping them. I will end them.

To that end, here is my brand new character:

Did you peacefully "resolve" the dispute between the NCR and the kings for the Ambassador? That counts toward your "favor". He says something to the effect that it makes you even.

Jello: I only meant in respects to the brutality. Are you saying the Legion is on the whole, more brutal than the Romans? Less? What they actually do is very different, sure... and Caesar once I met him (which was only a couple days ago) really underwhelmed me. The man you met in Niption is absolutely CREEPY with his calm. Caesar himself was a little unexpected with how laid back he seems to be in comparison, and he didn't really seem to behave as if he believed his Legion's values all that much... although that could be the point.

But I was measuring a sort of three-point general comparison of a 'modern' society (NCR), Ancient Rome, and the Dark Ages / Medieval existance that most of the Wasteland tends to experience.

    First DLC announced.
As the victim of a raw deal you must work alongside three other captured wastelanders to recover the legendary treasure of the Sierra Madre Casino. In Dead Money, your life hangs in the balance as you face new terrain, foes, and choices. It is up to you how you play your cards in the quest to survive.
It's XBL exclusive (for now) and will cost 800 MS points. It comes out December 21st.

It's a little light on the details but sounds pretty interesting.

The game seems to be not really all that different from Fallout 3. Granted, I enjoyed fallout 3, but I don't want to shell out $60 for a disguised expansion pack. I think fallout 4 will be the next to capture my interest

I would gladly shell out $60 for a 100 hour expansion pack to Fallout 3. If NV was indeed an expansion pack. Which it isn't.

Guys, didn't you know that sequels without numbers are expansion packs?

I consider it more of a spinoff than a sequel (see: Vice City and San Andreas to GTAIII), as there will definitely be a Fallout 4 at some point.
