    [face_mischief] I'm glad you asked.

    Assignment Two: Noses
    Due Date: May 25th.

    I figure everyone wants to be able to draw faces, but they're the most difficult to draw; and the most difficult part of the face is the nose, so here we are. [face_grin]

    The Easy
    [image=http://images.wikia.com/starwars/images/2/2f/Jaina_19_%282%29.jpg]

    The Tough
    [image=http://images.wikia.com/starwars/images/4/4e/Jacen3.jpg]

    and the Miscellaneous.
    [image=http://images.wikia.com/starwars/images/7/74/LeiaJedi.gif]

    I think it would be cool to do both a shaded drawing and a lineart, but it's totally up to you.

    I threw in the last one 'cause it has a profile of Han, but you can draw any nose in that picture but the Vong-killer-droid. [face_tongue]

    Let me know if I forgot anything. [face_doh!]

    If you have any advice for drawing noses please post it. [face_grin][hr][/blockquote]

    That's a nice assignment. As was the last one, too. Unfortunately I found this only after the first one was due, but I still might try those by myself...

    Noses can be tough, especially when you want to get two to look different... They somehow tend to end up looking too much alike. But I've always found eyes to be the most difficult part. To get some diversity to the expression (happy, tired, angry, confused etc.) is quite difficult. Think that could be an assignment at some point?

    I'll definitely be pitching in on this one.

    Noses are definitely something that are hard to master. The only advice I can offer is to keep on practicing and to remember that the structure of the nose is mostly made up of shadow. Don't try to create the shape of the nose with hard lines, but rather gradually build it up by placing different tones around the area to indicate light and shadow.

    DarthVogt, that nose is gorgeous! Absolutely amazing... [face_hypnotized] The shading looks very realistic.

    The only part that slightly bothers me is the left eye. It seems just a hint too big. Still, both of them (especially the right one) are quite good. And since this assignment isn't about the eyes, I think you did very well! =D=

    I'm not much of an artist, but I like to draw and I'd like to improve, so concrit would be awesome. :)

    :eek: That was fast!
    Overall, you all did great!
    So here's my concrit, I tried to make it more "con" and less "crit" so I'm sorry if I offended anyone. [face_blush] But you guys can all get me back when I post mine. :p

    Vogt: :D Overall shading on the face is good, it's in all the right places, but it should be a little softer. Nose is perfect! Really great! If I had to find something wrong with it I'd say that where the bridge of the nose meets the left (darkside) nostril, you should maybe blend that main shadow.

    Odj: The angle of the nose is a tiny bit off, not terrible but it makes if more difficult. You should be able to see the middle part of the nose underneath. As for the bridge, not much you can do there unless you want to make most of the face a shade darker so you can highlight it.

    Ennth: The right(Jacen's left) side is shaded perfectly. But as you said the size is a little off. :D

    Pie: The shading inside the nostril is perhaps a little too sharp towards the front. And you could shade the cheek behind the nose a little more but other than that the shading is great.

    I'm gonna go through these a couple at a time and I'll start with DarthVogt and odj.

    DarthVogt:

    Since this assignment was more aimed at the nose, I'm going to just focus on that and leave the rest of the face for now. Overall, I think you did a real nice job. The left side of the nose in particular is well rendered. You did a nice job building up the tonal values and bringing that into a highlight. The only thing I would watch is the way you outlined the corner of the nose going into the nostrils. It appears a little too dark and I would soften that up a bit. The cast shadow on the right side of the face is also a little harsh. Soften that up and blend that into the face a bit more and I think you should be good to go. :)

    odj:

    Again, I will only be focusing on the rendering of the noses and nothing else. In the Jaina one, I have to agree with Ghent that the angle of the nose is a bit off. I believe this is due to the fact that you have the tip of her nose leading directly into the nostril when there should be some space where the center of the nose meets the philtrum. The same can be said where the side of the nose meets the nostril. You need more space to indicate that it is actually tucking under to form the nostril.

    Moving onto Jacen, I think you did a good job with the shading. The only distracting thing about that is the hard line you drew on the left side where it should all be built up by tonal values. Soften that up and I think you should have a nice transition into the highlight. The size of the nose as a whole, however, is a bit off. Widen the nostrils a bit(as a general rule of thumb, the side of the nose usually lines up with the pupil of the eye) and indicate the center of the nose by adding a bit of a shadow just above the philtrum. Right now it's reading as if the highlight on the bridge of his nose is extending down to his upper lip when that's not the case. Hope that helps! :)

    Here's my first attempt at the noses. The left (Jaina's right) eye isn't quite right and the shading could be better, but I'm pretty happy with the nose. And luckily, that was the most important part in this assignment.

    [image=http://www.kolumbus.fi/~km3730/fanfics/jaina_nose.jpg]

    Ghent: I have two pictures for the first assignment. Would you mind if I posted them here for concrit, even though the due date is long gone?

    [face_angry] If DRL isn't the most annoying thing on the planet he's pretty close. That made no sense. [face_tongue]

    Anyway, I feel really stupid but I probably won't be able to post any art this lesson. [face_blush] I'll be very busy.[/color]

    Aleria: =D= Very nice! The shading is perfect! Just maybe a little lighter on the nearer side if her nose, so that the shadow in her eye-socket is more distinct. But other than that it's fantastic! :D

    Okay, I'll get in on this one. My noses could use some work. I too often fall back on just cartoon-y little "v's".

    I didn't realize how small I'd done this until I zoomed out. Oops.

    But the full image:

    And a close up of the nose:

    Ghent: Thank you very much! That's probably one of the best pictures I've ever drawn.

    Jedi_Sha: That picture of Leia is beautiful. It's marvelous how you can get the shading that good using a computer program... Very good.

    So, as I got permission, here's one of my attempts at the first assignment.
    [image=http://www.kolumbus.fi/~km3730/fanfics/mara_pose.jpg]

    I've got the Jaina pose almost done, too. It just needs some more shading and then it'll be done. I'm also working on the nose job for Jacen, so there might be a few more pics coming up from me in a couple of days...

    Earlybird: Han: :D 'Tis a very nice likeness to the pic, just try to keep your lines a little straighter. Leia: Same, it's very good, the nose is just a little crooked, but no biggie.

    :p Does everyone use a graphics tablet but me?
    Sha: :D Thanks for joining us, it's great to have you! I agree with Aleria, it looks pretty good. For Leia I would make the bridge of the nose a bit longer though.

    Aleria: Perfect proportions! =D= That's about all I can say, I especially like the shading on the arms. Can't wait to see the Jacen and Jaina pics too!

    [face_worried] Oh dear, it's an ex-mod . . .
    Nidrail: :D No problem, I'm not a very good host, but it's all we got. :p I think the shape of the face is very well defined. The bridge of the nose should be just light though. The shape of the bottom's a little bit off, but well shaded.

    I'm gonna try and see what I can do today for my own submission. :oops: If you have any suggestions on how to run this thread better, I'm all ears. :)

    What shall we have for the next assignment? [face_mischief]

    PS: For those of you who use a graphics tablet, could you tell me a little about you techniques? [face_batting] I'm not very good at it and I'd love to learn it. [face_blush]

    I am using old fashioned pencil and paper and have no experience at all with tablets. And for next assignment "Eyes?"[face_batting]

    I have seen "eyes" in the other pictures and they are looking great but they are just as difficult to draw as noses.
