Spring break, 2016. For some, it is a time of bondage freedom, an act of murder mercy, a most welcome break from the ceaseless grind of the day-to-day struggle. Students throw their books in the air at the arrival of their week-long recess. Teachers relieved by the peace given to them for the next seven days. Workers, employees, employers cashing in their vacation time and spending it however they see fit. The vicious friendly sun beams down on the welcoming earth, beckoning in a new season of warmth and fear joy.

For a select few individuals from various walks of life, this spring break in particular will be one to remember. A vacation they'll certainly never forget... if they survive it.

A plane ticket to Portugal is firmly in your possession. Whether you're going alone or bringing along family or friends, you rest easy knowing that the next five days of your life will be spent in one of the most dangerous beautiful cities in the world. Nothing could possibly remove you from this bliss.

So. Today is the day. Are you ready? Got everything packed? Told your families you'll never see them again goodbye, or to hurry because you don't want to be late? The plane's boarding soon. All that's left to do... is get on.

    Far Cry
    [IMG]

Welcome to Far Cry! If you haven't guessed already, this is a game that revolves around a group of vacationers who embark on an international trip to soak in every last drop of spring break they can before heading back to the real world at the end of the week. But, as I'm sure you've guessed by now, the whole “heading back” thing might become a little tricky as the game unfolds. I can't tell you much, but suffice it to say this won't be any ordinary escape for your characters. Expect challenging situations that will remove them (and you) from their comfort zones and force them into circumstances they never thought they'd be a part of. Morals will be tested, friendships will be questioned, and, in all likelihood, blood will be shed before the proverbial credits roll.

If you're interested and would like to take part, please fill out the character sheet below and send it to me for approval. You can play any type of character you want; a college student ready to be freed from the binds of school, a blue-collar worker desperate for a break, a photographer on a mission for a magazine, a senior citizen crossing one last item from their bucket list, a honeymooning couple, whatever you so choose. I only ask that each player submits no more than two characters apiece. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to start a conversation with me, my inbox is always open. Hope to see you all at the airport!

Character Sheet: (This is a basic template and can be expanded with additional information if you wish)
    • Name:
    • Gender:
    • Age:
    • Appearance:
    • Occupation:
    • Biography: (The airport you will be flying out of is Los Angeles International. You don't necessarily have to be from there.)
    Guidelines:
    1. PM character sheets to me for approval before posting in the thread.
    2. Two characters max per player. If a character dies in the game, you may replace it with a new one, but that will be handled on a case by case basis via PM.
    3. If you have an idea about where you want your character's story arc to go, PM me and we'll work together to make things happen. This is a collaborative effort and I encourage you to think outside the box.
    4. This is a game that is mostly grounded in realism, and I encourage your characters to reflect that. If you are a multilingual martial arts master with a mechanical engineering degree, expect to be nerfed. Hard.
    5. If you go an extended period of time without responding to a tag, I reserve the right to take over your character (after a courtesy warning via PM). You may return to the game at a later date, but I can't guarantee your character will still be available to play.
    6. Please respect your fellow players and obey all the general forum rules that apply.

    Name: Haley Gordon
    Gender: Female
    Age: 26
Appearance: Blonde, wavy hair and blue eyes. Stands at 5'6" and has a slim, but well defined build
Occupation: Physical trainer/up in coming fitness guru
Biography: Haley grew up in a happy and sunny So Cal home with her parents, and younger brother. She could never complain about her lifestyle as a child and teen. She did well in school with her dedication, she was always out going and friendly in social and family gatherings, and enjoyed outdoor activities between homework, such as roller blading, biking, surfing and swimming. It was all great until her mother was diagnosed with cancer in 2005. Haley began researching as much as she could for healthy meals to prepare for her mother and family to help out while she was going through treatment. It was that that motivated to stay healthy for her sake and her mother's. She went on to get her training certificate to help encourage other women around the world to make the same choice she made and slowly over time, her workout videos caught more attention and she was even being dubbed a "guru" of health and fitness. Currently, a DVD shoot was being planned for and she was scouting out the place for her first ever DVD. The location had to be perfect!

    Gender: Female
    Age: 36
Appearance: Shoulder length black hair, brown eyes, tanned skin. 5'6", 140lbs.
Occupation: Computer tech in large IT company
Biography: Though Carrie loves working with computers, on her off time, she is a bonafied arts and craft geek. Weaving, braiding, spinning, anything string related is her specialty, but she has other hobbies as well. She also plays with an group that likes to learn things pre 1600, so she has some other interesting skills as well. She is looking forward to this trip.

She won the ticket for a trip to Portugal, and so she read up as much as she could about the country. She's eager to visit, and to take a few craft classes while there. She has a bag of yarn with her, and she always has crochet hooks, knitting needles, and other things to keep her busy, especially on long flights. And after a very stressful month of deadlines and issues, she is quite happily looking forward to her time off. If she's lucky, she might even get to some face time to do some hiking as well.

    Occupation: Trend Analyst
Biography: Born in Boston and raised in New York, Matty has loud-mouthed sarcasm down to a T. His father was a Air Force pilot and from an early age, emphasized the importance of self defense, sometimes with hands on demonstrations. Matty grew up boxing, but stopped just before college. He went to UNC in North Carolina and studied Finance and Economics, because as his father so eloquently put it, “You ain’t gonna be no goddamn serviceman like me, you’re studying goddamn business.” With respectable grades, an exemplary internship performance, and an assault charge expunged, Matty was able to find a job in Chicago at an investment firm. His friends from school didn’t have any trouble at all convincing him to leave the bitter cold of Chicago for a week in sunny Portugal.

With Rebecca’s charisma and William’s affinity and attentiveness for education, both soon found themselves employed and settled into their new life as husband and wife. If truth be told, many were amazed they had even made it this far.

Now 5 years removed from their ceremony in the small chapel on the beach, cracks are beginning to form at the seams of their marriage. In a moment of vulnerability, William slipped and fell for an intern at the school where he works, which resulted in a brief affair. Before Rebecca could find out about it, Alan had broken it off and remained silent about the lingering effects, being careful to ensure that it remained his secret. Things continued on as normal, if a bit strained, for a few weeks until their 5th Anniversary approached. For the occasion, William surprised Rebecca with a tropical getaway vacation that neither one of them would soon forget.

OOC: And we're off, ladies and gentlemen! Strap yourselves in! :D

    Los Angeles International Airport
    March 12th, 2016
    11:25am

It was a well oiled machine, Los Angeles International. When you found yourself within its walls there was no mistaking it, all the hustle and bustle and the incessant footfalls and the travelers walking slowly and quickly this way and that and the intersections of lives both complex and simple on their own journeys completely oblivious to any others around them, and the hopes and dreams and struggles of others as foreign as silence in the crowded halls. And if you weren't walking briskly to make sure you got to your gate on time you sat watching the aircrafts outside the massive windows go back and forth in the clear blue sky, and when one landed your head and your heart perked up at the promise that maybe that was your plane and the long wait was over and you could get on and relax and close your eyes for a few hours with the only worry being whether or not you'd be sitting next to an inconsiderate snorer or a shrieking toddler. And your mind wanders to the person in line in front of you at security half an hour before digging through her purse wondering what was so disconcerting about her perfectly typical possessions, and all you want to do is get up there and pull out your wallet and your keys and your phone and take off your belt that's been tugging on your waistline and remove your shoes and stand in some gaudy machine with your hands above your head like you're surrendering to some malicious oppressor. So finally you do, and you get to your gate and you sit down on the uncomfortable leather chair and sneer because there's not an electrical outlet close enough for your laptop's charging cord but you open it up anyway and drink your overpriced coffee and all of a sudden you become just another one of them, another commuter sitting there enjoying your free wireless internet, responding to emails from your intruding mother-in-law or your boss or your parent teacher organization reminding you that volunteers are needed for the school play next week. And all of a sudden your mind begins to drift towards your inevitable and unwelcome return from vacation, which immediately puts a damper on going on the trip in the first place because you know it won't last forever. So you tell yourself not to worry about real life because that part is done for the time being so you relax, unwind, lean back in your seat, close your laptop and your heavy eyes along with it and before you know it your mind starts it all over again back to the beginning until the oh-so-sweet ding comes over the loudspeaker and the voice of the gate attendant informs you that your plane's ready to board and apologizes for the wait. And that's just if you're traveling alone.

A select few group of travelers may or may not have been having similar experiences on this particular morning, but all would be heading to the same destination, gate 67 where their plane to Portugal was scheduled to depart five minutes before noon. The rising fitness star Haley Gordon would surely catch a few stray looks from admiring passersby, and perhaps William Cochran would have to make a keen effort to keep his line of sight away from her lest his charismatic wife Rebecca Cochran catch him gazing. Maybe Carrie Bander with her wide range of knowledge and skill sets would sit down next to Adrian Frazier and strike up a conversation about his journalistic endeavors and various articles he'd written for the Times, having to speak up a bit over the lively conversation Mathias Blake was having with his pals. Or perhaps none of this would happen and Haley would be invisible to a preoccupied crowd and William and Rebecca would bask in the beginnings of their much needed vacation uninterrupted and Carrie and Adrian would enjoy their time alone before the boarding of their plane and not have to worry about the sarcastic musings of Matty a few seats down. But however the morning decided to transpire, their destinies were intertwined, these travelers, and although they didn't know it then their paths would soon cross in a way that none of them would ever be able to forget.

    IC as Haley Gordon

The morning started off great! It was a relatively warm day for the coast. The sunrise was gorgeous on her usual morning run, her breakfast (eggs, her own recipe for healthy, protein packed, pancakes, a veggie and fruit smoothie) and coffee were on par today, and she had a wonderful trip coming up! It was a beautiful day and held hope for an eventful trip.

Haley finished going over her emails with her kitty mug of coffee (sweetened with almond milk and cinnamon) and rushed off to her bedroom. There lay her bed. It had been neatly made (mainly for the joy of coming home to a somewhat clean house) but it was hard to tell under the pile of clothes and shoes. She was always a last minute packer, especially when she had several details to attend to for the dvd she was planning for. It's now or never, she thought as she grabbed at outfits, stuffing them in her tote bag. She'd only be gone a week and most of the trip was planned for business, but she squeezed in time for a little down time. She loved what she did for a living, but it was still important to have a little time to herself.

After finalizing accessories and packing hair and shower products, Haley closed the bag, tossing it over her shoulder and ran back into the kitchen. She slipped on her tennis shoes, grabbed her laptop, cell phone, a bottle of water, purse, and keys, and jetted out the door.

Upon arriving at LAX, eagerness bubbles up in her stomach, a bright smile on her face, even while going through the security line. Nothing could ruin her cheerful mood! Taking up her personal items from the scanner and retying her shoes, she headed to gate 67 and spotted a seat toward the large window displaying the runway. Making herself comfortable, she pulled out her iPhone and went on to the Internet browser. She had created her own community for like minded women to share in their personal achievements or encourage others. She grinned widely upon reading a post from a lady in Pittsburg claiming she just finished a mile run, something she hadn't been able to do in over ten years. It was messages like that that Haley thrived on and made everything worth the time and energy she put into her "work". Well, it wasn't really work. Not when you love what you do. And she lived by those words.

Just finishing a congratulatory and words of encouragement reply, an attendant announced the plane was ready to be boarded. She collected her things and made her way to the gate, offering a cheerful smile to the lady taking her boarding pass.

It was going to be such a wonderful trip! She breathed in deep and stepped foot on the plane.

    Mathias Blake
    LAX

Mathias had always hated airports. The overcrowded lines, the woefully ignorant tourists, the overpriced lattes all gave him a bad feeling in his stomach, like nausea, or hatred. As he shuffled from line to line, he furrowed his brow all the way. His friends, Jack Oliver and Benjamin Greene, were engaging in an inane argument about who had a better chance of winning the NBA Finals, still three months away. Jack, ever the bandwagon fan, was passionately describing the record-breaking play from Golden State’s Point Guard Steph Curry, while Ben, having grown up in Texas, was contending that nothing could compare to the teamwork of San Antonio. Mathias was a lifelong Celtics fan and was a little bitter about their mediocre season, so he was quiet. With nothing to add to the conversation, Mathias began daydreaming and people watching.

While considering, for the fifth time that day, how ridiculous it was that they had had to come the opposite direction to L.A. to catch a flight across the Atlantic to Portugal, Mathias began observing the other passengers at their gate. Behind a pair of brown-tinted sunglasses, his eyes wandered towards a couple in their thirties. The girl was girl-next-door pretty, and her boyfriend, husband, whatever, looked kind of like a history teacher Mathias had once had. He noticed a man sitting alone that looked strangely familiar. Like he had seen his face on the people you may know section of Facebook or a mugshot. Definitely a picture. You don’t usually see goatees anymore. He continued to a woman in her thirties that appeared to have yarn sticking out of her bag. How very boring.

Mathias was watching a young boy pick on his little sister, when the first boarding call was announced. He glanced over to the already forming line and saw a gorgeous blonde near the front of the line. She had wavy hair, which had always been kryptonite to Mathias, and looked to be in fantastic shape. He stood without saying a word to his friends and picked up his carryon. They broke from their conversation and got up to follow him. Mathias didn’t take his eyes off the girl as he fell in line to board.

    Adrian Frazier

Adrian read the email with disappointment. He hadn't been able to get an interview with Chancellor Merkel, and now it looked as if de Maziere might cancel. He hadn't even left L.A. and his article looked to be up in smoke.

The German cabinet is concerned that an article which interviews Lutz Bachmann along with Minister de Maziere might legitimize the PEGIDA movement...

The point was to compare and contrast the differing opinions about the refugee crisis. If the German government didn't let its ministers get interviewed, then PEGIDA would control the narrative. He typed up a similar response and sent it to his editor to pass along to his German contact. He sighed and sank back in his chair. He couldn't do anything more than that, might as well relax before his flight to Lisbon.

Three hour layover, should give some time to explore the airport, then onto Berlin to see what this article will look like

Adrian's eyes traveled over this fellow passengers as he dwelled on his upcoming trip. Next to him was a woman with medium length black hair who had yarn in her bag. There were a few families, a couple with young kids, a few with bored looking teenagers. A group of financebros....he caught the eye of one of them, who looked like a boxer. Well he didn't seem like the typical finance guy. There was a woman who looked like a news anchor on KTLA sitting next to her husband. And there, walking towards the front of the security gate was a beautiful blonde woman.

Adrian's first, foolish thought was that Liz had come back. No, that was impossible, she had been dead two years. But the woman did look a lot like Liz, at least before she had gotten sick. He shook his head. No he mustn't think of her, lest he slip back into the dark abyss of depression.

Adrian grabbed his carryon and joined the security line, lost in thoughts of his assignment, and doing everything he could to not dwell on her memory of his dead fiancee.

    Carrie Bander
    LAX

Carrie had been an LAX for 3 hours now. She had taken another flight there, and now she sat in the terminal, waiting for her flight to leave from gate 67. She had a computer technical magazine rolled tightly under her arm, along with a small pouch that held her tablet. tablet. Her short hop to get her, she had read her magazine, but she looked forward to the long flight to Portugal, so that she could wrap her fingers on some yarn, and truly began to relax. It was practically calling to her from her bag. She flexed her fingers. She was so excited to go to what she considered an 'exotic' getaway. She had traveled, many times of course, usually because of her job. But this was the first time she was leaving the country, to do something totally non work related. That alone, she found exciting. But to a country known for many types of crafts too... well, it was the perfect get-away to her.

She heard the call for boarding, and she stood up, her roll on and her pouch with her. Waterproofed, of course. She had dressed comfortably, black dress pants, a light blue long sleeved shirt, and tennis shoes. She had a shawl with her, because planes tended to be cold, and she could always put it over her face in-case any foul odors threaten to loft her way. The only other piece she had on her was an very intricate woven necklace she liked to wear when traveling. It was a conversation piece, and helped to break the ice. She wondered where her seat was located. Considering she had won the ticket, she didnt care where she sat on the plane, but it would be nice if she wasnt squished in her seat, or saddled between fussy kids. But she was so excited, so she didnt care. People were beginning to line up, so she fell in line along with the others. There was a couple ahead of her, casually talking to each other, Others were silent, each traveler busy within their own sets of thoughts.

Carrie combed her fingers through her hair, and then with a happy grin, followed the moving line along, hoping that her seat would be a good one.

    Rebecca Cochran
    LAX

This trip is not supposed to happen.

Despite her excitement and the mental need to take this vacation, that single thought continued to permeate Becky's mind to the point of being uncomfortable. It wasn't that she believed that something terrible would happen or that she would not enjoy herself, it was more of a control issue and the fact that she had been rendered helpless. Her husband, William – or Will, for short – had sprung this whole thing on her this morning in such a lackadaisical manner, that she was fairly convinced that it had all been an elaborate joke. Who in their right mind would go out of their way to plan such a thing without consulting her? As a newscaster, she had a responsibility to the people and the city in which she served…she couldn't just pack up and leave everything behind to frolic in the sun. When she had explained her plight to Will, he had made her even more angry by revealing that he had spoken privately to her boss and had taken care of everything. That would have been the final straw until she remembered one very important detail…their anniversary.

So, this was her gift…a very expensive gift, but a gift nevertheless. How could she remain angry at that? That was all she needed to hear before she melted into his arms and allowed him to whisk here away…

But now that they were at the airport and preparing for their departure, that feeling of dread came over her once more. What if she missed something big at work? What if they couldn't find the appropriate personality to fill her spot? What if Will had lied about securing her time off? What if…what if…what if

With pursed lips, she reached for the mobile phone stowed in the front pocket of her carry-on and began flipping through her emails, trying to discern whether this was truly her reality or if she was making a horrible mistake based on the subject headers that popped up in her inbox. Her index finger hovered above one that was marked 'urgent,' but before she could tap the screen to open it, a much larger hand enveloped her own and blocked her action.

"Nope, this is our time," the even tone of her husband whispered close to her ear. "No work."

When he started to wrench the device from her grip, she began to protest out of habit, causing the phone to slip from both of their fingers and bounce upon the floor. Both husband and wife stared at it for a long moment before Becky finally uttered a curse, feeling both embarrassed at such an immature display and betrayed by the very man that she loved. His actions made her second-guess her earlier suspicion that he had indeed lied to her about speaking to her boss.

Without a word, she stooped down and collected the phone, catching the eye of the dark-haired woman standing behind them in line. "Hi," she said, smiling politely as she stood up. She tugged at the hem of her light jacket and turned back to spear her husband with a glare, feeling even more embarrassed now that she was certain someone had witnessed them fussing.

"This stays here for now," she admonished her husband with some finality, switching off the phone's display and sticking it into her jacket pocket this time. "I'll turn if off when we get there."

The attendant checked their tickets one by one as they filed passed her and down through the jet bridge and onto the plane where the pilot and copilot stood side by side greeting each passenger as they boarded and sometimes assisting with the occasional overloaded carryon bag. "Enjoy your flight," she told them. "Enjoy your flight. Enjoy your flight. Enjoy your flight." And on and on it went without complication or interruption and it never took long before she was on autopilot and the words escaped her mouth without thought or conscious effort, the smile on her face just so. Every day she saw husbands and wives and mothers and daughters and businessmen and children with their toys and their electronics and headphones producing music that she could hardly decipher and they passed her without a second thought as they floated on by, leaves in the wind never to be seen again.

For the pilots it was equally routine. Smiles and nods and hellos to the passersby. They'd watch them find their seats and stuff their carryons into the overhead compartments above and try to decide between themselves who'd get the window. And they'd get the all clear from maintenance and the stewardesses would inform the passengers of proper procedures and how to buckle their seatbelts and when they'd be by to serve them snacks and drinks and portable movie players if they wanted them. Another day at the office.

One woman's wheeled suitcase caught on the metal ledge that connected the jet bridge to the aircraft and she was struggling to get it over the hump with her left arm as her right arm held her sleeping infant that was drooling on her shoulder completely at peace with the world outside her dreams. "I'm sorry, I can't-"

"Let me," the pilot smiled and knelt down and lifted the suitcase over the lip and stood back up and nodded his head at the woman who expressed her gratitude towards him and left to find her row.

OOC: Y'all can sit wherever you want on the plane. It's a standard sized aircraft, six seats to a row, three seats on either side of the aisle. Of course I'd encourage you to sit next to other player characters and try to get to know them. You will be spending quite a bit of time together after all. ;)

    LAX - BOARDING

As Carrie patiently moved along in the boarding line, she noticed that the couple she had seen earlier seemed to be having some sort of discussion. What made her notice was the grab the man made for the woman's phone, and the phone slipped from their fingers to bounce noisily along the floor. That and the very long pause they both had, as they stared at the phone. Carrie smiled. Must be a couple.

When the young woman scooped down to collect the phone, she looked back at saw Carrie looking towards her. "Hi," she said, smiling politely as she stood up. ""Hello." Carrie responded, sounding very cheerful and upbeat, even as the woman turned back to look at her husband with a glare. Carrie chuckled softly. It was too lovely a day, and exciting an event to stay mad for long. She was sure whatever had caused their blow out, would soon dissapear once the flight left the tarmac.

Carrie could see the the attendant now, and her excitement grew as she readied her boarding pass. She could hear the attendant sounding almost robotic, as she greeted each person. "Enjoy your flight," she told them. "Enjoy your flight". When Carrie reached them, she smiled, as she showed them her boarding pass. "Thank you!" she replied. Then asked what seat. She was thrilled to hear that she had spot in first class! She had never traveled in first class before, so she all but floated pass the attendants, as they steered her in the right direction. When she reached the area where the pilot and co-pilots where, she asked them how long the flight was supposed to be. She nodded, as she heard the response, and gave another smile. "Then smooth sailing to you Captain." she joked softly, before turning to find her seat in first class. She quickly put away her little carry on, stuffing it underneath her seat, and then she leaned back her seat just slightly. She pulled out the magazine, and began to scan the article she had started to read earlier, while waiting for boarding to finish. She wanted to enjoy every single bit of this vacation. And she was doing her best to not show that it was her first time in First class. She LOVED IT! It would allow her more space to work with her projects...that is, once they got going, and into a nice, calm flying pattern. And of course, a few tasty treats would be lovely too.

    IC as Haley Gordon

Haley took her first step onto the plane with a deep breath after handing over her boarding pass. She was one of the first people to board. The captain, co pilot, and attendants, greeted each and everyone coming on board in a warm manner. She beamed and politely said, "Hello," in return.

Readjusting the shoulder strap to her bag, Haley moved carefully down the aisle, her eyes scanning the seat numbers and making sure to look out for bumping into anyone or their belongings as the rows were a tight squeeze.

A14 was listed on one side of the plane. She nodded to her ticket that mirrored the seat number and slid in, taking the chair closest to the window. She usually preferred the window seat anyway, so it worked out. The two seats next to her were empty for now.

Nudging her bag under the seat in front of her, she turned off her cell phone and pushed open the window cover. Currently, it was just showing off the loading ramp, but it would be a beautiful view soon enough!

As Mathias began the awkward shuffle down the aisle of the airplane, he made a split-second decision. He leaned back to his friends and said, “I’ll see you guys when we touch down.” Ben looked at him quizzically and Jack asked, “...uh, what?”

Mathias didn’t answer, but winked, and when they got to row 14, he slid into the middle seat. Glancing back, as he put his carryon beneath the seat before him, he saw his friends laughing, as they found their own seats in row 22.

Mathias glanced to his right, at the gorgeous woman he had seen in line. He took a moment to shift in his seat, then smiled at her and said, “I always find plane passengers to be such an interesting mix of people.”

After tucking her now turned off phone into her bag, Haley closed her eyes and rested her head back against the seat. It was going to be a long flight of dry air and lack of room to move, but she was prepared to stay as hydrated as she could and that's what walking lunges up and down the aisle were for when she felt stiff. And then soon enough, she'd be running on the beach again, just not the beach she saw everyday.

When she opened her eyes, she spotted the person who would be sitting with her. She kind of hoped both the seats next to her would be empty, but she didn't mind the company either. A tall man with light brown hair stepped in the side row with her, taking up the middle seat, right next to her. After he stowed his bag in from of him, he looked to her with blue eyes and offered a warm smile.

"I always find plane passengers to be such an interesting mix of people.”

Haley grinned in response. "Aren't they? I love the diversity! Complete strangers from different areas all getting on the same plane."

The man sitting next to her seemed to be in pretty good shape, which she respected. And maybe he was a little handsome too...

"I'm Haley," she started with another smile.

    Adrian Frazier

Adrian nodded to the flight crew as he boarded the plane. He glanced at his boarding pass one last time; C12, the aisle seat. Probably for the best. He had profiles to read before the interviews, and if he had the window seat, odds were that he'd stare out into the clouds for half the flight.

Adrian walked down the aisle, noticing that the Liz-look-alike was two rows behind him. As he bent to take his seat, he noticed the boxer looking finance guy nearly leap into the seat next to her. Adrian smiled. That had been pretty much his reaction when he'd first seen Liz sitting down at the campus cafe all those years ago...

He unpacked the German profiles before stowing his bag in the compartment above. As he sat down, he accidentally jostled the shoulder of the woman next to him. He glanced over at her as she raised her eyes from the magazine she was reading.

Haley’s smile was radiant and Mathias could have easily gotten lost in it. He noticed that her eyes crinkled in the corners when she smiled. ‘Careful,’ he thought.

He extended his hand to shake hers and offered his own name. “Mathias,” he said. In college, his friends had told him that his first name made him sound pretentious, and that had been the origin of his nickname Matty. However, in business, and with women, the name sounded more distinguished. Or so he thought.

Mathias continued, “What’s drawing you to Portugal, Haley? Or are you connecting?”

    Carrie Bander
    LAX - On plane

Carrie was settled into her seat, and excited, as she waited for take-off. Folks were busy getting into their seats now, but she was leaned back, just vaguely looking at her magazine. She was on vacation. The tech in the magazine only vaguely holding her interest, thought she did circle a few articles to get back to later on. After all, from what her friends had told her, it was almost an 15 hour trip! Plenty of time for other things.

It was only when someone bumped into her, that she looked up from her magazine, to see a youg man taking the aisle seat next in the same row as she. She was in the window seat. Perfect. She scanned the gentleman as he took a seat. Hmmm. Not too tall, short black hair, brown eyes, tanned skin. Close cropped goatee. It looked good on him. Not all could wear a goatee well. She looked over and smiled, giving the man a nod. She decided she would be the first to speak, and see what kind of seat partner she had.

"Oh, Hello." she stated pleasantly, offering another smile, as she laid her magazine across her lap.

The man sitting in the middle seat extended his hand out in greeting and introduced himself as Mathias. Haley returned the handshake with a nod and another smile.

Her blue eyes watched a few people as they trudged down the rows with bags and personal items that fit the carry on rules. It would probably be a little bit longer before they closed the door she guessed.

"What’s drawing you to Portugal, Haley? Or are you connecting?”

"I'm staying in Lagos and it's a little business and a little vacation. Super excited!" Haley couldn't help but beam a little at the thought of enjoying paradise to the fullest. "How about yourself?" She asked as she dug the two straps of her seatbelt out of the side of the chair and snapped together.

"You don't mind if I keep the window open, do you?"

    Airplane, LAX

Mathias arched his back, stretching. He had always hated airplanes. At his height, there was no way to sit comfortably and he invariably got stiff after thirty minutes. With the thirteen hour flight ahead of them, Mathias was not at all looking forward to this cramped seat. You don't mind if I keep the window open, do you?”

Mathias shook his head, “By all means.” Then he answered Haley’s previous questions. “That’s a coincidence, our first stop is in Lagos, as well.” This was half true. Mathias and his friends hadn’t really made specific plans. “It’s all vacation for me. One of my friends is still at school and this is his Spring Break. I just took off work to tag along.”

“What’s your business, if you don’t mind me asking?”

Haley watched Mathias shift in his chair a bit. He didn't look entirely comfortable and he had a long flight ahead of him. He shook his head to her question about the window and she was grateful to keep it open. She always loved the sights from above.

“That’s a coincidence, our first stop is in Lagos, as well. It’s all vacation for me. One of my friends is still at school and this is his Spring Break. I just took off work to tag along. What’s your business, if you don’t mind me asking?”

"Nice! Sounds like a lot of fun. Just don't have too much fun!" She laughed a bit and lightly nudged his elbow with hers.

To his question, she smiled. "I'm into fitness. Kind of a personal trainer." As excited and over the moon as she was about her plans to film a dvd, she always felt off about gloating about it. She was grateful for every opportunity she had, she never liked rubbing anything in anyone's face.

Adrian smiled sheepishly. "Sorry about that" He looked at the papers in his hands. "I was too caught up in making sure I didn't drop them"

He figured he should get to know her. It was a long flight, and it was the least he could do after nearly knocking the magazine from her hands.

"So, are you staying in Portugal or just stopping by to fly elsewhere?"

    William Cochran
    Airplane, LAX

For the most part, Will considered himself to be a patient man. He had always been receptive of his surroundings and laid back enough to simply allow certain situations to roll off his shoulders – being a high school teacher was testament enough to that. But if there was one thing that was threatening to shatter that perception he had built up for himself, it was the excessive screening and overabundance of rules that needed to be followed in order to simply reach the aircraft. The airlines were running things more like a prison and treating their customers as if everyone was suspected of a crime. It irked him to no end, and by the time they finally reached their seat in coach, his patience was certainly wearing thin.

In fact, it had reached the point where he was beginning to second-guess his decision to even go through with this trip in the first place, and unfortunately for him, it was a lot more complicated than being inconvenienced by a few extra rules. The small altercation with Becky over the mobile phone had put things into perspective. It was glaringly obvious that she was more dedicated to her work than to what he liked to describe as a ‘floundering relationship.’ Of course, he had never admitted that to her face, but he got the sense that the feeling was mutual. Throw in the trust issues – he still couldn’t believe that she would suspect him of lying to her regarding her time off – and they certainly had their work cut out for them on this vacation.

Even now, as they both settled down into the seats, the first thing that attracted her attention was that damn cell phone and not the fact that he was there beside her. As he watched her, he took note of the way the soft glow of the screen highlighted her features to the point where she almost looked ethereal in nature. It made that sense of detachment looming between them hurt even more.

With a sigh, he propped his elbow up on the armrest and rested his cheek against his palm, idly allowing his eyes to wander around the cabin to the different walks of life that would be joining them on their journey today. After a moment, his gaze settled on a woman with wavy blonde hair sitting a row ahead of them. He started to straighten with curiosity until he realized that she was engaged in conversation with a young man sitting beside her…something he longed for from his own wife. He knew that should have been a sure sign to back down, and yet, he felt himself continuing to stare, silently wishing that his circumstances were very different.
