Aaron Allston. He's a category all of his own.

Next tier down, Zahn and Stackpole in the OT era, Luceno and Stover in the PT.

I don't think I've ever read anything from Stackpole, what did he do? And why do you like Allston so much for that matter, I haven't read much of him either :)

Stackpole did the Rogue Squadron books in the X-Wing series. And the Dark Tide duology in the NJO series.
Allston does comedy. Good character interactions as well. Focuses on pilots but does a good job with the Jedi when they show up/

You should try then though. Great characters to follow. And Allston's works in the NJO, LOTF and FOTJ stories have plenty of Jedi. Really made the EU richer imo

James Luceno (especially his prequel trilogy-era books)
Kevin J. Anderson (the Jedi Academy trilogy is one of my personal favorites)
    Timothy Zahn
Claudia Gray (she only has 2 books so far, but I'm sure she'll be considered one of the best Star Wars writers in a few years)
    John Jackson Miller

This is how it feels to be Matthew Stover. You are asked to write the novel adaptation of Revenge of the Sith, and not even you can polish this turd. So you invent a fairly trite mechanism that people who haven't read a proper author in their lives feel is somehow powerful and deep. Louis be Berniwho? They don't care, and you at least have some money for food. Right?

This is how it feels to be Matthew Woodring Stover... forever...

    Shatterpoint was good.
    Traitor is overrated
    Shadows of Mindor was terrible.

And ROTS was marginally better than its source material, which is like saying being forcibly sterilised is better than being shot.

I'm not sure about you but Traitor is the thematic pinnacle of the EU and really Star Wars itself. You have the right to your own opinion I suppose.

I think that's probably quite the understatement regarding Ender Sai.

That's a popular if rather misguided opinion(hatred for the prequels) but to insult personally attack Stover and his fans makes me a little bit tempted to call on a mod.

You don't feel like moderating yourself this time?

I stated a preference. I also noted that someone is given a lot of credit for writing that is not of the quality it is breathlessly afforded by fans.

If fans think there's good writing there, it's because they probably haven't read anything that could be called good writing. It doesn't make it enjoyable, but the hyperbolic "actual literature" label has been applied.

Bernard Cornwall, for example, wrote very entertaining historical fiction novels ranging from the Sharpe ones to his Dark Ages take on King Arthur. It does not mean enjoying these books is a bad thing; confusing them with Birdsong-level quality is however.

It's a pretty simple, and it's not insulting anyone. Nor is it especially controversial.

Wow, really? I mean, everyone's got the right to their own opinion, but...these are some pretty uncommon ones.

I would like to point out that all and sundry that this thread is called "favorite EU authors" and the question posed in the OP was "which authors, in your opinion, get SW the most?"

At no point has this thread ever been about the "literary merits" of Star Wars fiction.
