Favorite Game Music

well, the Sims had some good music if you think about it.

especially if you replace it w/ your own mp3s

 

For me, I'd have to say:

Mega Man 2 [Bubble Man's Theme/Dr. Wiley's/Opening Title especially]
Maniac Mansion [just.... phonkeh]
Metroid [all very classic]
Metroid Prime [amazing renditions of classic themes as well as brilliant new ones]
Alice
A Link To The Past [especially the Dark Overworld theme]
Ocarina of Time
Little Nemo
and many more.

I'd recommend OCRemix to anyone who hasn't check it out yet. Also, Minibosses are a band that make some pretty sweet covers. My favs are Metroid/Kraid themes and Megaman2.

Knights of the Old Republic had beautiful music.

 

KOTOR, FF7 and FF6 are my favorites.

 

First of all the Zelda series, and the Star Fox games (I've only heard the main theme but the rest must be great too) and I think many of the scores in the Bond games are good too. Mostly they're different versions of the classic Bond theme by Monty Norman, though, but they're good nevertheless IMHO.

I also liked the music in DK64 and the Banjo games. I also like some of the new music in Star Wars games, like SotE, Bounty Hunter and the Rogue Squadron series. I guess I would have liked the KOTOR music too, if I'd heard it, but since i'm not into RPG's I never have and probably never will play it.

 

FFVII and IX have some great pieces and even though I hate the game, VIII's opening theme is amazing.

Metal Gear Solid 2's title theme is wicked too. Makes you feel like you're winning a war

And I absolutely love the original non-Disney music in the Kingdom Hearts soundtrack. Utada Hikaru is great in Japanese and English

 

HALO: COMBAT EVOLVED

no doubt it is king of game music in my mind with KOTOR a close contender.
Halo's main track is just haunting which makes the suspense of the game great.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (overworld and dungeon both).
The Metroid Prime Select screen (the one you see after pressing Start, but before actually loading a file).
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (pick one; I liked it all).
Final Fantasy X (especially the opening tune...after starting a New Game; also the love theme).
Final Fantasy X-2 (1000 Words, some of the town and battle themes, and the intro screen tune, Eternity ~Memory of Lightwaves~).
Final Fantasy VIII (Liberi Fatali).
Final Fantasy VII (Aerith's theme, main theme).
Final Fantasy VI (Terra's theme).
Final Fantasy V (main theme, crystal theme [yes, I know it's in others, but I like this rendition; plus I don't have any others from those games off the top of my head]).

Any of the Medal of Honor Games (especially Frontline)... I agree they have good music for it, isn't it composed by JW?

007 NightFire has a great opening song too: "Nearly Civilized" by Esthero.

Oh yeah, 2 other games with great music are Starfleet Command 1 and 2. Romulan Theme especially rocks.

Deus Ex

 

The Final Fantasy music has always been great, even when it was all 16 and 8 bit music. I missed it, but in early 2004 there was a concert of the FF music at the Walt Disney Symphony (I think). I would have love to have seen that.

Also the Xenosaga soundtrack is amazing, much of it was done by the London Philharmonic. For me, it is important that the music be immersive, or somehow evoke the scene/event happening.

For example the opening piano theme of FF X is, for me, very very evocative and I love listening to it. I love "video game" music, then again I buy game soundtracks...

 

Medal of Honor was composed by Michael Giacchino, and those soundtracks definitely rank among my favorites. My others are the ones for KOTOR and Age of Empires 2 (what ticks me off is that there's no way to get the AOE 2 soundtrack).

 

Quest For Glory 5 is still unequalled in terms of game music.

Other noteworthy games include Morrowind, I-War 2, Europa Universalis 2 and Neverwinter Nights.

 

Hey, I'm glad someone mentioned Morrowind. The soundtrack isn't very extensive, so it gets a bit redundant after a while, but some of the battle music is rather brilliant. And I suppose the main theme was nice too, before I'd heard for the 16 millionth time.

But I hafta say KotoR is truly the premier of game music. It's practically a symphony unto itself.
