Favorite (non-John Williams) movie score.

"Conan, pop? ARe we thinking of the same Conan?"

Yes I think so. The whole orchestra kind of like accompanies the melody and all the instrumental lines are going in the same direction (except for the melody) just like in rock and popmusic. In Williams' scores every line has it's own melody and moves in different directions. That's what makes it so interesting. More counterpoint so to speak.

In the main theme in Conan the whole orchestra plays a F chord and then the wole orchestra moves to a E flat chord....It's hard to explain but I hope you understand what I'm getting at...

 

I understand the words coming out of your mouth, but I can't comprehend not liking the Conan music...to each his own, I guess. Different strokes for different folks.

 

Enio Morricone's music for Serge Leone's "Gui' la Testa".

"Shauns Theme" in that is the most haunting/celebratory piece of Music I've heard in a film. My Dad Loves the movie and used to play it all the time, and I've picked up a love for it as well.

The music makes the film, it kinda reminices on times gone by, on things that Youth throws away and Age regrets.

I recommend it, even if it is quite hard to get hold of!

Definitely Horner's score for Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (and also Search for Spock, which is basically a continuation of the same score).
You really feel the majesty and mystery of space travel and exploration in that score.

I was also singing the main theme for Willow for months after seeing it.

 

"The Lord of the Rings : The Fellowship of the Ring"

 

Haven't heard that soundtrack yet....So you recommend it?

- Moulin Rouge (I love the mix)

 

But JW did the patriot...

I'm thinking of LOTR, Gladiator (eventhough I'm no big Zimmer-fan) and Braveheart...

 

I would have to say....

American Beauty - Thomas Newman (without his help it would just be a plastic bag blowing in the wind, with his music its something very special that everyone should experience.)

Thin Red Line - Hans Zimmer (play it 10 times in a row & you won't take it off! It just gets better & better)

Mummy Returns - Alan Silvestri (I didn't think I would like this but it just keeps impressing me Parts of it have a real "Lawrence Of Arabia" flavour & you can never complain about that!)

Gladiator - Hans Zimmer (above & beyond the call of a score. Didn't just compliment or add to the visuals, it made the whole flick! Still can't believe he didn't win an Oscar!!)

 

DEFINETLY GLADIATOR. Like Adakin said, it pretty much made the movie. I listen to it like every day. Barbarian Horde!

 

Pretty much anything by Thomas Newman is incredible. 'Brooks was Here' from The Shawshank Redemption is earth-shatteringly beautiful.

As is the theme played in American Beauty when the film of the plastic bag caught in the wind is playing.

He has an amazing gift for composing simple, skeletal, haunting, beautiful piano themes.

FYI: I think his uncle, Arthur Newman, composed the 20th Century Fox fanfare! Without which... etc etc etc

 

I QUITE like Howard Shore's soundtrack to FOTR but it's not amazing nor is it particularly memorable.

Unlike WIlliams, he doesn't really expand and develop different themes throughout the score (apart from the central Fellowship theme) and there's too much gothic operatic stuff to make it really 'user-friendly'

I'm looking forward to JW's Ep2 score massively though. I still think his TPM score was a bit of a disappointment...

John Barry did not write the 007 theme, it was written by Monty Norman for Dr.No in 1962, but John Barry has compsoed some of the best 007 scores.
