Return of the Jedi. The Empire Strikes Back is a pretty close second, but I like that in ROTJ good triumphs over evil, which isn't the case in TESB. Really, though, they are all wonderful films.

A New Hope. I feel it is pretty much flawless, and out of all six films, best represents the spirit and magic of Star Wars.

The Empire Strikes Back because of character development and music plus the visuals are outstanding(especially the cloud city scenes).

Empire. It's just the most interesting thematically and visually of the films, also it was so risky that even now, most franchises still wouldn't dare end an installment like that. Not only does everyone end on a bad note, there's no final action set piece; it's all small-scale drama for the finale that builds to an interpersonal bombshell instead of a huge explosion, which would NEVER be done these days.

Honestly that's why, apart from the Hoth parts, I don't like Empire as much as the other 5. It feels too small to me.

If action is all you want, then sure it's not as explosion-filled as the others but it's far superior in pretty much every aspect of filmmaking. I wouldn't be a SW fan at all if I just wanted spectacle, there's tons of other stuff out there that's far better CGI porn.

RotJ for me. ESB is dull city and it's not because I am shallow or prefer CGI. I like the redemption aspects but I wouldn't really say there's a whole lot different between Jedi and Sith. I think both have proven they are waaaaay too extreme. That's in part why both Orders are destroyed. One is not merely a helpless victim either. Jedi had their own ill parts in these wars. I largely prefer Jedi because it acts as the end of a story and I prefer to think Luke actually learned something from it.

The Empire Strikes back is my favorite film in the OT, Star Wars Saga, and one of my all-time favorite films. There is not much more I can say that has not been said but I absolutely love Luke and Vader's confrontation in Cloud City, Luke meeting and training with Yoda, the score of the film, etc.

Return of the Jedi for me as well especially for the beautiful ending. Vader is redeemed, the empire defeated. And let's not forget the fun with C-3P0 and Han banters or Palpatine trolling Luke, good moments. Otherwise, I love all the movies.

ESB is my favourite, love the music, colours, atmosphere, acting, everything.

If you were to go back and ask me as a kid it would have been ROTJ. At ten I had a summer where I watched it two or three rimes a day, getting close to having withdrawal symptoms if I went to long without seeing it. Love the duel on the death star with Luke's refusal to fight and Vader's redemption....

I'm not someone who wants mindless action in Star Wars, I just didn't think Empire balanced it right.* [face_dunno]

*Apart from Hoth - there was an evenly-distributed focus on all of character, action, and the big picture in the Hoth parts.

    ANH

Vader is a mercenary, (Almost more of a Ventress or Grevious type character rather than an all powerful demon like he is in ESB) and the corrupt officials rule the show. Tarkin is also an extremely underrated villian. The new novel about him is easily my favorite work in the EU reboot as well.

Nothing gives me more tension and excitment than the space battle of Yavin and attacking the death star and I love Alec Guiness.

ANH also easily has the best opening shot of any star wars film, with ROTS being a close second.

The Empire Strikes back, personally, just the curiosity of how (and even IF) the characters were gonna come back after a fall like that, luckily, I had Return of the Jedi on VHS as well at the time I first watched Star Wars.

The Empire Strikes Back, it's the most character-based of the films and feels more personal (probably thanks to Kershner's direction).
