Mmmmm, "Helicopter Attack" and "Kilgore Goes Surfing", some classic scenes from Apocalypse Now (featuring Wagner). It's awesome to watch that on a widescreen TV with a nice home theater system. :D

Though I definitely do not claim to be a connosieur by any means, I do enjoy "The Pines of Rome" by Respighi, Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, 1st Movement, Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro Overture", Chopin's "Minute Waltz in A flat major", Strauss's "The Blue Danube Waltz", George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue", and "Carnival Overture" by Dvorak.

If I were to pick three out of the list, I'd have to go with "The Pines of Rome", "The Marriage of Figaro Overture", and last, but most certainly not least, "Rhapsody in Blue." "The Pines of Rome" has such great orchestral grandeur and good quiet moments that JW's music reminds me of. "The Marriage of Figaro Overture" is just good old fashioned orchestral fun IMO. "Rhapsody in Blue" I really enjoy--though I may be connecting it too much with the cartoon accompaniment from "Fantasia 2000", but I really like this piece. Great jazzy orchestra.

I'm surprised no one has said "Liebestraum" by Franz Liszt yet. I love that piece. Beethoven's 5th and 9th symphonies are some favorites too. Also the "Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto." "Blue Danube" is another favorite. :)

For me, nothing too old fashioned, but a good old "Heraldic Legend" by Elliot del Borgo. Brilliant.

Holst was good. the Planets is a must

I also love Nessun Dorma from Puchini's (sp?) Turandot. Especially when Pavoratti sings it.

I am currently working up a piece for trumpet juries called The Hollow Men by Vincent Persichetti. Another great piece, but far from classical or "old" sounding.

2nd. mvt. of Beethoven's 7th symphony is great. It is much more closer to romantic than the more classical Beethoveen. The classical Beethoven sometimes did not know where to end a piece. If someone was listening to one of his schertzos, the joke was on them because Beethoven kept going and going and...

    anything Chopin is good.

And John Cage and prepared piano. this stuff is just too interesting!

    You don't like Beethoven's scherzi?!

Yes, I know sometimes he repeated the trio, but a little extra Beethoven is always okay with me.

I think the scherzi from his 3rd, 5th, 6th, and (especially) 9th are among the best movements ever written.

I also think that the "New World Symphony" by Davorak is worth listing.

I did not say that I did not like them, I just said that Beethoven somtimes had difficulties ending pieces. He would almost overuse strong cadences. this is just my humble opinion.

As for Nessun Dorma, yes it was on the Sum of all Fears.

Hmmm....I think I'll just break it down into categories.

Symphony: Scriabin's third symphony, the Divine Poem, though maybe it's more of a symphonic poem

Piano Concerto: Yeah, Rachmaminov's 2nd is also my favorite.

Violin Concerto: I like Tchaikovsky's the most though Mozart wrote some good ones.

Symphonic poem: Les Preludes by Liszt and also Scheherazade by Rimsky Korsakov

I don't like the term 'classical' I prefer 'orchestral' 'symphonic' or 'formal composition' but in any case:

    Der Ring Des Nibelungen
    Schoenberg's Moses Und Aaron
    Strauss's 'Last 4 Songs'
All of the Kalevala music by Sibelius
    Any Bach
Mendellsohn's Incidental Music To A Midsummer Night's Dream
    Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony
    Mozart's 41st Symphony
    Bruckner's 4th & 7th Symphonies
    Alexander Nevsky by Prokofiev
    Beethoven's 7th Symphony
    Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream
    Mahler's 3rd Synphony
    Chopin's Preludes
    Goryecki 3rd Symphony

Those are the ones I listen to constantly.

    The art that Wagner created.

As Nietzsche said of Parsifal, "other really good music, which I have at other times heard and loved, seems, as against this, a misunderstanding!"

A friend (who is a grad student majoring n French Horn) suggested it to me because of some personal problems I've been going through.
