I'm only going to talk about historical Australians here.

Every Australian should know the name of Private Bruce Kingsbury, VC. He should be a national hero but isn't. He's the man who saved Australia. On the Kokoda Track in 1942, during the battle for Isurava, the left flank of the Australian position was about to be overwhelmed by a sustained Japanese attack. Asked to counter attack, Kingsbury took up a Bren gun, and firing from the hip charged the Japanese advance, calling for the rest of C company to follow. He killed several Japanese, halted their attack and turned them back. He basically stopped an attack that threatened to overrun the heavily outnumbered (close to 10 to 1) Australian force that was dug in on the track preventing the Japanese from taking Moresby. Had he not lead the counter attack at that time, the position would have been taken - most vets swear by this, the battle would have been lost, the Australians would have been beaten back to Moresby and the Japs would possibly have had an airbase and a staging point for the invasion of Australia. The Australians did eventually abandon Isurava, but on their own terms and not due to a Japanese breakthrough. He was killed shortly after he lead the charge by a Japanese sniper. There were so many men who sacrificed themselves on the Track, the fighting 39th were almost wiped out, so to single anyone out is probably bad form. But to me, Kingsbury is the man whose singular action saved the nation. He posthumously won a VC for his actions.

I also love Bourke and Wills. Simply for the fact that their expedition was the greatest comedy of errors in Australian history. It would be a brilliantly funny story if they both hadn't croaked at Cooper's creek. As it is, it's a great yarn.

Ah, there's nothing witter than the endless Bush = Evil bandwagon jokes, except maybe someone rallying against the Patriot Act without reading it first.

    (Yes, Patriot Act =/= evil)

Or, unless you are or believe in Mike Moore, he wasn't actually elected. The votes were rigged.

Or, if you are Bush, you believe that God elected you, thus giving you supreme power in the name of omnipotence. As Bush said: "God told me to invade Iraq..."
    Or some such.

I had vainly hoped to inject some halfway cultured discussion into FF Oceania; sadly all I get is witless Bush bashing from the disadvantageous low ground (Yes, you storm the high ground!), and the usual tonne of Spammage which is be expected in FF Oceania these days.

It's almost like YJCC with more swearing. [face_tired]

a ) If you wanted intelligent discussion you should have said it. You know just as well as everyone else that all threads in Oceania are seen as fair game for social-threading after the first three posts.

b ) If you want us to discuss, you could try not insulting us and propping up your own ego while you're at it.

Insulted? Come on, even to you guys the American stuff has to sound lame. We're talking about people in history; so the Bush = teh evil pic Spammage posted is an absolute no no.

I mean, if you're going to make fun of America, use funny pics:
