nadal/cilic and fed/del potro are the semifinal matchups in shanghai. del potro might not be able to go though, he hurt his wrist breaking a fall in his quarterfinal match.

nadal's quarterfinal win against dimitrov was the 870th match win of his career, tying andre agassi for sixth all time.

rafa lost to roger last night in straight sets. i tried to stay up to watch it but failed. roger has now beaten rafa five times in a row and has closed the gap in their rivalry to 23-15 rafa. also nadal is 0-4 against federer in 2017, 61-5 against everyone else.

    : (.

She may not have been a great on the order of the best women tennis players, but what she did after losing to Steffi Graf was *great*. Most of the best ever haven't had a redemption like hers, which involved losing in the Wimbledon finals a second time before winning on her third attempt.

I remember her Wimbledon win as well as those tough losses. What a champion she was, and one of the all time greats in doubles. 23 or so majors finals appearances, 12 wins in doubles. 4 mixed doubles majors titles.

Augh, more terrible news. I remember that Wimbledon run, too - playing the "old style" S/V game of Billie Jean and Martina as the sport began to turn towards power - and winning. She was really something.

    RIP

Federer has had the kind of year that implies a notarized contract with Lucifer, signed in blood.

    http://www.espn.com/tennis/story/_/...nnis-roger-federer-did-numbers-stellar-season

    a sampling:

    - one of three men in the Open era age 30 or older to win multiple majors in the same year

    - oldest player to finish in top two of the ATP Rankings

    - won 50-plus matches in a season for the 14th time, tying Connors for the most in the Open era

    - In Melbourne, Federer became the fourth man in the Open era to beat four top-10 seeds in one Grand Slam

    - first man to win Wimbledon without dropping a set since Borg in 1976

Djokovic just withdrew from Dubai. Given Nadal's withdrawal from pre AO matches and Murray's lingering issues we might see 3 of the big 4 hampered by injuries in the Australian Open, if not outright withdrawals. Figures that the oldest one of the four is the healthiest.

    more like acquaintances i think.

looks like rafa will have to play himself into form in melbourne. worked in new york, but it could also mean an early exit.
