    Question:

If the Sith were extict for "over a millennium", does that mean that the Jedi in TPM had never had a lightsabre fight with another person, and Qui Gons fight with Maul was the first he'd ever had??? Who else would they have had duels with, if there were no Sith?

I'd say it´s possible it was Quigons first fight.
Not that it would make much difference.
His abilitise to fight well do not come from training but from the force.

^ If thats true, then why do Jedi train with lightsabres at all.

There's a difference between Dark Jedi and Sith. I think it's not very likely that it was Qui Gonn's first lightsaber fight, as he seems to be pretty good at it.

Also, the lightsaber is more than just a weapon to fight with against other lightsabers. It, when combined with the Force, is a great defensive tool when dealing with blasterfire.

It's not that they haven't trained. I'm sure they have fighting between each other for practice and such. However, since the Sith are extinct, I doubt they've really had serious life or death, saber to saber battles that often. The occasional apprentice might go awry, but nothing as powerful as the Sith.

In the AOTC novel, actually, we learn that lightsaber battling techniques have changed. Now the Jedi train in a style more particular to blocking blaster fire, whereas the older generation, like Yoda or Dooku, have a riposte style that's more acqauinted with crossing blades.

One of Qui-Gon's apprentices turned to the Dark Side, and engaged him in a lightsaber duel when he saw that he had killed his father (he had no choice).

In the Ep4 novel Obi-Wan informs Luke that even in the Empire era that lightsabers are still used in certain 'quarters' of the galaxy.

Arrr, space pirates would cross blades with those Jedi laddie bucks!
