And a reason why the PT had to use more CGI was because they had already touched all the possible real world-based planets. Sand planet, forest planet (x2, actually), snow planet. The PT moved foward and became bolder. Under water city, planet-wide city, lava planet, sinkhole planet. You can't do stuff like this in (fully) real locations. So what do we have in TFA, now that they've insisted in "more real locations"? Sand planet, forest planet (OMG, it's snowy this time!), snow planet. They even had the nerve to label these as "new" planets. What's new about "Jakku"? It's a renamed Tatooine, that's what.

 

The amount of practical work tells me they aren't being lazy at all when it comes to this movie

Practical effects tells you the story and acting is great. Great.

 

No, it tells me the people working on this movie aren't lazy and aren't making a lazy movie. Your attack against me might as well be used against the people saying the story is lazy since they haven't seen the dang movie yet.

 

EP VII is a breath of fresh air after all of those showy planets.

The PT looked different than the OT. The ST is going to look different than the PT & OT.
Different eras of filmmaking. The ST can build on the good things of the OT & PT. But evading some of the mistakes of the PT and even of the OT. The ST is going to look glorious thanks to the OT & PT!

 

They touched on all the real world-based planets? Lol I highly doubt that. There's MANY things they could have done. Do you categorize earth as merely ... 'sand, forest, snow' ...?

Go tell that to the visionary JJ Abrams. He seemingly could think of nothing else than recycling those three.

Have you seen the movie? Have you seen all the locations have to offer? Just because there's snow and sand doesn't mean it doesn't have other characteristics. We already heard about a Savanna. It's beyond crazy to make such complaints when we haven't seen the movie. It also comes down to playing with expectations. People assumed Tatooine and Hoth because of sand and snow but it was a point to prove multiple planets could have heat or cold. It was a cool idea, and it doesn't mean either planet is restricted to just snow and just sand.

PLUS.... A lightsaber fight in a snowy forest is ...Bad*** so .... whatever.

At the end of the day, I much prefer more realistic locations than overly alien locations. It's a personal preference but it makes me connect more to the characters.

 

That's because they're telling a story in TFA. Not creating funky screen savers.

name some other planets where humans (characters in the story) can live reasonably. the gungans didnt even breathe water they just lived there. a desert works for people to live, snow, etc.
why would they live on a gas giant because it would be in a space station.
jj did a great job with the red planet from star trek.
the problem with making up some completely strange planet and using imagination to the extreme is that fx give it a weird oz not real quality that takes you out of the movie. theres got to be a balance

 

The irony being you appear to have pre-emptively set your default to JJ and the ST ruined my PT. If you want to engage at any point instead of trolling/ baiting, go ahead, if not why not just head back to the PT thread where you can presumably moan in peace.

i really love this thread!
its controlled, it gets a little rough here and there but its not a madhouse.
