Hey, if you want your live-action movies to look like cartoons, that's fine by me, but I want it to look as real and believable as possible. Practical or CGI, whatever it takes.

I want just one of these films to be shot in 3D and not post converted

Something that bothers me about a lot of modern blockbusters is that digital sheen they seem to have. Everything is a little too bright and clean. Marvel movies have this a lot but they're usually pretty well written and acted so I don't get too bothered by it.

My favorite part is people saying "yea but the OT looks dated too" maybe because it was made like 45 years ago, the fact that the PT looks even more dated and was made 10 years ago is proof that the OT holds up so much better the way it was made. The worst most dated looking parts of the OT are from the horrible SE nonsense

The Avengers looks just as dated as the PT.

The look to avoid is the XBox Game Level look. Which, people won't like me saying, the Falcon flying through the Star Destroyer looks a bit like.

From the sw.com article about the Duracell commercial:

One of the key creators of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, cinematographer Daniel Mindel, worked on the spot, and Duracell employed a new anamorphic camera lens and aspect ratio only used previously on Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

    Anybody know more about this?

Perhaps an attempt to bridge the gap between 2.35:1 and IMAX?

Yeah, I was wondering. IMDB lists it as standard 2.35 with some scenes in 1.43, but...yeah...IMDB.

I thought that shot looked fine, but the X-Wing taking out the TIE looked like it to me.

Its not like the Snowspeeder battle holds up look-wise today. Im fine with the air battles looking CGI and fakey, as long as all the live action stuff does not.

I agree with this - I think simply by their nature, and the fact that computer games are so cinematic now - space battles, chases and dogfights are going to draw comparison with video games - and I don't think that's a bad thing - those TFA shots remind me the Battle of Yavin, Endor, Coruscant, the Pod Race, the Asteroid chase all with a flavour of their own.

What I like is that the stuff that doesn't have to be done digitally, largely hasn't been - for me practical troopers, less obvious soundstage green screen and seemingly not so many miniatures in place of sets (though I appreciate this I'm guessing off a tiny sample) is enough to sell the illusion of reality more. The main thing is regardless of the techniques used, does it look great - to me, absolutely it does.

RE the Duracell ad - I'm really encouraged that Mindel and ILM worked on it, because (as silly as this might sound to some) I think the feel and look of the trooper action will match closely in some ways, and I think that's why it has (to me anyway) such an OT feel to the trooper side of the action.

At lrast one of these films need to be shot in 3D itd be a shame if they were all post-conversions just to avoid something the prequels just happened to be known for

The mask above Vader's charred helmet is Snoke. I called it first.

This is fantastic and makes you realise just how good the effects were in this film. They're seamless.

You're wrong! They used nothing but 40 year old technology, and Star Wars is no longer pushing the envelope! They went backwards! Other insulting stuff! I'm mad! Anger!

Oh, sorry. I thought this was the wild, insulting, hyperbole thread.

As most of suspected they got a good blend of all types of effects.

They shot TFA on 35mm film - like some kind of cave men!
