I don't know if this has already been done, but I'm curious to see what most of the players here prefer and why. FF vs Zelda have been competing for the best console RPG for a while now, IIRC, though I think Zelda beat FF with the release of N64's Ocarina of Time.

What do you guys think? :)

Huh? Now you can get away with calling Final Fantasy an RPG... barely. But Legend Of Zelda? Zelda is not an RPG. You might aswell call Metal Gear Solid an RPG. Just because Link runs around with a sword and a shield does not make it an RPG. You could of at least had both games be in the same genre.

Zelda is an action adventure game.

Final Fantasy is a turn-based combat game.

There's no comparison to be made...I might as well compare Tom Clancy games to the Mario games.

Hmmm, can you give some solid examples of RPG games?

Probably not. RPG is a massively diverse genre. Morrowind could be classed as an RPG as well as Zelda. Then again so could Resident Evil from a certain point of view.

    AD&D ;)

Well, most MMORPG's I've seen are closer to the definition of a true RPG, where you actually develop your character through interactions with other PC's (player characters) and NPC's.

Any video game can be considered an RPG since you're taking on the role of a character, but you have very few options regarding character development and are basically just going along for the ride. At it's core the appeal of a traditional RPG is the ability to act and think creatively within the confines of a fantasy world. Most games simply do not offer you freedom of movement and of action that you need and you're stuck with two main options - puzzle solving and fighting.

Ahh I see, thanks for explaining :)

What about Diablo II, is that considerd an RPG? You still follow a path...

    >>>RPGplanet sees Legend of Zelda as a RPG...<<<

Whats your point? Gamespot, EBgames and IGN have Balders Gate: Dark Alliance listed as an RPG. Anyone who has played it could tell you it is clearly not an RPG.

i think zelda is commonly refered to as a action/adventure rpg

its got rpg elements like item collecting, building up hp, and magic etc

but its got a realtime combat system and overall plays more like an adventure game

You never build up HP in Zelda. You collect heart pieces. I GUESS it could be called building up hit points, but I'm thinking along the lines of like... numbered HP, like with what FF/other RPG's do. And item collecting isn't a strict RPG trait. :)

That's a pretty narrow definition of what constitutes an RPG. By those standards, there are very few real RPGs on the market. In addition to Final Fantasy, you can add Arc the Lad, Bahamut Lagoon, Breath of Fire, Chrono Trigger, Dark Cloud, Dragon Quest/Warrior, Grandia, Kingdom Hearts, Lufia, Lunar, Phantasy Star (exception: PSO), Seiken Densetsu (Secret of Mana), Skies of Arcadia, Star Ocean, Suikoden, Tales of Phantasia, Xenogears, and countless others to the list of games that don't qualify.

Yes, and for good reason, a real RPG needs an interactive environment and (usually) lots of independent characters to interact with. The only genre that can do all this is the MMORPG.

I would classify all those games as adventure games.

Well if that's how you define it then that's fine, although I think most gamers have a different definition.

I have a feeling that the majority of gamers also classify Zelda and FF as RPGs, regardless of what D&D players might think. ;)

I voted for Zelda, but I haven't really had any solid FF experiences.

Definetly. "Role-playing" is such a vague term... and a term a lot of people don't understand. Even I have trouble understanding it at times.

If you play D&D, I think that should grant you a good idea what it means to be involved in an "actual" RPG.

I'm not a huge D&D fan these days, though.

    Final Fantasy

I started playing FF when I was about 12. Didn't start really playing Zelda until a couple of years ago.

Zelda. Zelda is a game you actually play, while in FF the CPU does the battles for you, after the player has to go through a couple of 10 menus in order to make one hit to Sefiroth-whatever.

Both are really easy but i never got by disc 3 of a FF game coz i think they get too repetitive and stale after a while.
