    Chapter Twenty-One

Qui-Gon sighed contentedly as he plopped a tray laden down with food in a corner of his favorite spot. The cafeteria had a few people in at this hour, but it wasn't very crowded. He was starving. After a week of nothing but healer's food he was about to waste away to bones. He dived into his food, practically inhaling the first dish on the top.

A padawan of about ten gazed at him openly from across the room. The little girl seemed to find something about him extremely hilarious, though she hid it well. Her light blue eyes sparkled as she gazed at him, unabashed. Her master bent down to admonish her and she whispered something to the tall woman. The female master glanced at Qui-Gon and started, surprise clearly in her features as she blinked. Again she and her padawan whispered together.

Qui-Gon was oblivious to all the whispering going on around him as hungry as he was. He picked up his second entree and began to munch on it. The whispering quickly became a buzz that was pressing on his ears as he finished off his full tray. Qui-Gon wondered just what everyone was laughing at and glanced down to see if he'd spilled anything on himself. With some amount of surprise he realized he was still dressed in the clothing for a hospital patient.

Oh, great, he thought to himself.

A shadow loomed over him. Half expecting Han'yaie, he was surprised to see Mace Windu standing there instead, a look of mirth mixed with condensation on his dark features. "Escape from somewhere, did we?" his friend asked.

Qui-Gon blushed slightly. "I was starving. You can't expect me to eat what Han'yaie calls food for a week, can you?" He arched a brow. "And shouldn't you be in the Healer's Wing yourself?"

"I'm avoiding it," Mace remarked as he sat down beside him. "That is different from escaping it." As he settled himself on the long bench, his face contorted briefly with pain, but was soon smoothed over once again.

Qui-Gon shook his head. "Well, don't tell on me and I won't tell on you."

Mace sighed and shook his head. "Every time I make a deal with you, I end up regretting it. Why is that, Qui-Gon?" His eyes shone with laughter.

Qui-Gon adopted a hurt look. "It's never my fault though!" he said in protest.

Mace barked out a laugh. "Sure it isn't! And you suppose that the Trollean incident wasn't your fault, either?" He raised an eyebrow.

"Not entirely. You helped, if you haven't forgotten," Qui-Gon pointed out.

    "Your idea," Mace shot back.

"Oh, sure, blame me for everything!"

    "Of course!"

"Now that's just not fair. What kind of friend are you anyway?"

"One whom helps people avoid where they are supposed to go, evidently," a loud voice said from behind them.

Qui-Gon groaned. "Why did you have to spoil my dinner? I was quite enjoying my evening."

Han'yaie glowered and pointed a finger at Qui-Gon. "You need to be in the ward so I can keep an eye on you, and you..." He switched to Mace. "...need to be checked out."

Mace raised an eyebrow. "As soon as I'm done eating my dinner," he said.

Han'yaie glanced down at the empty spot in front of him. "You haven't even started."

Quick as a flash Mace stole a piece of fruit off of Qui-Gon's tray. "Is that so?"

Han'yaie glared. "Fine. You two grown men eat and take your wonderful time while Mace bleeds to death. I'll stay right here to escort you back."

Mace grinned through a mouthful of the fruit he was eating. "So nice that you care."

The Healer about choked while Qui-Gon let out a booming laugh. This time he winked at the little blue-eyed padawan and she grinned back.

Mace arched a brow. "Well, if you really wanted me to hurry, you could go in line for me and get me a big tray, and fetch me a drink," he said with a smirk. "It would make things go faster. After all, I'm a poor, wounded cripple," he deadpanned.

Han'yaie threw his hands into the air as Qui-Gon about bruised a rib laughing. He sent a look to the little padawan and she quickly ran to the line to fetch

::ducks and covers head:: I know, I know, it's wayyyyy longer than I said it would be. I had a crazy time with sickness and play rehearsal, then play production and deaths in the family. Yet all that is over now, this is the week before Thanksgiving break, which is also a week, so the updates should start being on a more regular basis again, though not everyday.

I am so very sorry it took so stinkin' long. Forgive me?

Oh Durhelediel it's totally understandable! Believe me! I haven't had a chance to update one of my stories in quite a while [face_blush] for multiple reasons, so fear not! I'm juz excited that you are able to update it now!!! [face_dancing] yay!!

hehehe Mace cracks me up in this! And poor Han'yaie! He's only trying to do his job (henceforth the word 'trying' hehehe)

Great job!! A mystery about the shooting? Hrmmm ;)

Yeah no worries at all! RL gets in the way sometimes and that's completly understandable, we're not going to get out our torches and pitchforks or anything. ;)

Besides, the update was well worth the wait IMHO. LOL, Mace and Qui give that poor healer so much grief for our entertainment, lol.

    More soon!

You have nothing to be forgiven for. I'm just glad that everything has calmed down a little for you.

Heehee, Qui-Gon in a hospital gown - oh wait, that could be good ;)

Glad to see everything is status quo at the moment, now we just need to have Obi-Wan healthy and whole.

Kynstar- Heehee, glad you liked Mace's humor. Being Qui-Gon's friend, he has to have some humorous side, right? lol Not really a mystery on the shooting. That is pretty much open to interpretation, but my thoughts on it is that Obi-Wan, though he does not feel the Force as strongly, is still connected to it and using it, even when he thinks it is not there so in fact he saved himself from being killed. Thoughts on that?

Arwen- ::hides from pitchforks and torches:: Layren and I are contemplating doing a humor fic that involves the healers and Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon's files. We're still discussing details of it, but it'll be really funny when we get to do it.

Rogue- Working on him...he's got a lot of emotional and physical healing to do, though Layren and I are not going to bore ya'll with reading through all of that. lol

    Thanks for being so patient!!

    Chapter Twenty-Two

Several days later, Qui-Gon was busy getting information together to report to the Council about what had happened while he'd been a hostage with Z'aherien. He was writing his report and preparing to deliver it to the Council when he was finished when his comlink beeped. He thumbed on the small cylinder. "Jinn," he said.

"Qui-Gon," came Han'yaie's voice. "Obi-Wan has finally woken. I thought you would want to be here when we get him out of the bacta tank."

"Oh, yes, I'll be right down. I was just trying to get caught up on a few things," he remarked. He saved his work and closed the datapad quickly, anxious to see his padawan.

In a matter of minutes, Qui-Gon was in the Healer's Ward and in the room of bacta tanks. Obi-Wan was wrapped in the traditional white robe and was being supported as he was led down the steps to where a hoverchair waited for him. Obi-Wan's face lit up when he saw his master, though Qui-Gon was struck by how Obi-Wan's face seemed to have aged somewhat.

"Master!" Obi-Wan gave a joyful cry.

"Padawan," Qui-Gon greeted warmly. "It's good to see you awake. How are you feeling?"

Obi-Wan did a double take. "You?you can see! How??"

Qui-Gon grimaced. "One of Han'yaie's concoctions finally worked the way it was supposed to. It restored my sight to be as good as new."

Han'yaie and Anya helped to lower Obi-Wan into the hoverchair and Obi-Wan seemed to sink into the padded softness. He seemed tired as he said, "Well, to answer your question, I'm doing better, I think. Still can't draw a deep breath...but Han'yaie is pleased." He pressed a hand to his chest, near his heart where his wound must be, though Qui-Gon could not see it because of the robe.

Qui-Gon nodded. "Good, good. I'm glad you're making progress." The Jedi Master was truly grateful that Obi-Wan was alive after his encounter with Z'aherien. "We have a few things to talk about, but for now let's just have something to eat, shall we? I imagine you're quite hungry."

Obi-Wan brightened at the mention of food and Han'yaie frowned. "He can go to the cafeteria, if you swear on your honor as a Jedi Master you will bring him back, Qui-Gon."

Qui-Gon gave him an offended look. "When I went to the caf I came back," he pointed out.

Han'yaie fixed him with a glare that said plainly that he doubted Qui-Gon would have without Anya there to pester him. "I want Obi-Wan back in two hours. I don't want him exhausted."

"Yes, Master," Qui-Gon quipped. His gaze softened. "I don't want to tire him out either."

Han'yaie flashed him a rare grin. As he walked off, Obi-Wan thought he heard the older master mutter, "I need a nap."

Qui-Gon chuckled. "Come on, padawan. Let's go eat."

Obi-Wan nodded and sank into the back of the repulsorchair. "I'm so starved."

Qui-Gon grinned as he pushed the padawan swiftly through the Healer's Ward and toward the cafeteria of the Temple. "I imagine so. The healer's food isn't known for being tasty." He sobered some. "We have a lot to talk about, Obi-Wan."

"Can't we at least hold off on the lecture until I get some real food, Master?" Obi-Wan's tone was light and teasing, but the words were sincere.

"Of course, padawan," Qui-Gon said mock seriously. "You didn't think me so cruel as to make you listen to a lecture on an empty stomach now did you?"

    "No, Master. You're not Z'aherien."

Qui-Gon arched a brow at the mention of Z'aherien, surprised that his padawan brought it up first. "Thank you. I think."

Obi-Wan gave his master a very small smile as they entered the caf. "Did...I mean...is he...?"

"He is dead padawan. He can't hurt you anymore," Qui-Gon informed him in a soft voice.

Emotions flickered across Obi-Wan's face, but none of them were belief. "Are...you sure?"

"You may ask Master Windu if you doubt. Z'aherien committed suicide rather than be brought to justice for his crimes," Qui-Gon replied.

Obi-Wan turned his face away, though Qui-Gon noticed the flesh around his neck was tight. All he said

Yay! Everything is getting back to normal, albeit slowly, but normal nonetheless!

And I've always wondered what kind of food they serve at the Temple - is it like cruise ship food (Yum! - at least ours was :D) or was it like grade school cafeteria food?

Oh, and I was just wondering if you had any plans to do anything else after this one.

Kynstar- Yes, we wanted to show that Obi is slowly recovering from his dark time. What better way to do that than to cover Qui in gooey green veggies? lol

Rogue- I've never been on a cruise so I'm not sure what kind of food they have there, but I have always seen it more like a college cafeteria-style, but perhaps that's only because that's what I'm stuck eating right now. lol Future plans to be discussed later in the thread.

Arwen- I just love Yoda. I throw him in any time that I can, haha!

Diane- Nothing keeps our fav Jedi down in the dumps long so I'm sure Obi will be fine...Qui too.

Snowbee- Glad you have been able to catch back up with us! I'm trying to juggle exams right now with this but since I'm about to put the last chapter up, it's not that big of a deal.

    Chapter Twenty-three

Han'yaie glanced up as Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan returned, Bant in tow. "Ah, nice to see that I didn't have to track down another escapee," the healer remarked as he crossed to Obi-Wan and began to check on his condition again.

Qui-Gon snorted and shook his head. "I told you I would be back, didn't I? I never go back on my word."

Han'yaie raised an eyebrow but didn't comment. After a moment, he pulled back from Obi-Wan and gazed seriously into the padawan's eyes. "This little excursion drained you more than it should have. I want to delay surgery on your leg another day and have you go into bacta again."

Obi-Wan groaned. "Bacta again? Are you sure that's entirely necessary? I feel fine!" he protested.

"He's your padawan," Han'yaie grumbled, glancing at Qui-Gon before returning to Obi-Wan. "Yes. I want to make sure you're strong enough before surgery. You won't be in all day...just about four hours. I won't even put you under. I think Qui-Gon wants to talk with you anyway."

Qui-Gon scowled at Han'yaie. "Stay out of my head please." He sighed and directed his next comments to his padawan. "Obi-Wan, listen to Han'yaie. I don't want you to get an infection from being too weak to go through surgery. Are we clear?"

Obi-Wan clearly swallowed another retort and mutely nodded.

"Good." He put a hand on the boy's shoulder and his eyes softened. //I lost you once, padawan. I could not bear it if I lost you again. Please, listen to the Healer.//

//Yes, Master,// came the dutiful response, though Qui-Gon could feel a very familiar frustration behind the thought. Obi-Wan nodded to Han'yaie. "I'm ready, Master Han'yaie."

"I'll be here when you get out, Obi-Wan," Bant promised as Qui-Gon steered Obi-Wan's hoverchair toward the bacta tanks.

Han'yaie began to ready the padawan for his bacta dip. He got a chair for Qui-Gon after the boy had been lowered into the tank so the Master wouldn't have to stand the entire four hours outside of Obi-Wan's bacta tank.

Once Obi-Wan felt the familiar warm, thick liquid slide over his bare skin, he sighed through the breath mask. //You wished to talk to me, Master?// He wasn't stupid, though. He knew that he and Qui-Gon had not had much opportunity to talk over the last month?too much had happened too fast.

//Yes. I'm afraid we haven't had much time to talk about anything lately, have we, my padawan?// Qui-Gon sent, in tune with Obi-Wan's thoughts as he always was, as he sat in the chair outside Obi-Wan's tank.

//Life has gotten in the way, I think, my master,// was Obi-Wan's sardonic reply.

And death, Qui-Gon thought to himself, yet he didn't voice the thought to his padawan. His gaze darkened and he knew it was time to reprimand his padawan for his past disobedience. //Obi-Wan, you had no right to disobey my orders when I ordered you not to give yourself to Z'aherien.//

Obi-Wan's answer at first was only the mental equivalent of a sigh. Long moments passed before he finally said, //I know. But I felt the Force guiding me where I had not felt it much at all before then since my...since I died.//

Qui-Gon nodded a little. //I'll be bearing that in mind when I pick out your punishment, but, Obi-Wan, this defiance of orders needs to be curbed. You have been doing it far too much lately,// he said sternly.

There was a quick flash of annoyance from Obi-Wan. //Master, I'm not a child anymore. There will be times when I disagree with you. I will not openly disobey your orders again, but please know that I have my own opinions as well.//

Qui-Gon felt his padawan's annoyance. //You have not just been disagreeing with me, padawan,// Qui-Gon said sharply. //You have openly disregarded my orders at least twice.//

//Those were needed,// Obi-Wan shot back, a cloud of bubbles from his mask expelling upward, showing the hard breath he had expelled in his aggravation.

//In your opinion,// Qui-Gon shot back. //You do not have the authority to disregard my orders, young one. Is that clear?//

    There was sile

Okay, future discussion. Layren and I want you loyal readers to know what we are tossing around and we want feedback, good and bad.

    We are thinking of doing an epilouge to this one that will mainly focus on Kyran and Lana. We won't tell you what's going to happen, but it'll be big. :}

We are also thinking of doing another series that shows how Lana and Kyran first met, how they fell in love, how they had to fight with the Jedi Council to be together, etc.

    Tell us what you think.

I've been having fun dabbling with Kyran in the stories that me and Layren are doing and I soooo want to see how that goes! I remember when they first met ;) 'Twas Qui who really first met her hehehehe juz Kyran won her heart ;)

OK now I read it *snrk*

Great job you two! Loved the lil spit there and Obi's admittance to not going to his aide quickly.

Loved Qui's response! [face_love] ahhhh the love between Master and Paddy is so cute!!! Warm fuzzies!!!

Yeah, well, we'll have to be careful, Kynstar, because my awesomely evil villian is definitely too evil for the rating system on this website. lol And he is the one who starts the whole mess in the first place. So if I keep him (which of course I will!) I'll have to tone him down for here...though I just might keep him at full evilness on ff.net so readers can have the best of both worlds. heehee

Wow! I can't believe that we're at the end of this series :D but poor Obi-Wan, talk about being a captive audience, LOL, being lectured while in the Bacta tank :) at least it seems like they've come to an understanding at least.
