    First Battle of Hoth

Chiss Lieutenant Abarrt?eskle?durneb walked towards a gravsled in the numbing -70°C cold of the planet Hoth?s polar regions, and shivered through his cold-weather gear. A storm was coming on, but it was vital that the Chiss get their equipment above ground and out of their habitation tunnels as soon as possible; their seismographic equipment had predicted massive earthquakes within hours, and anything left in the underground tunnels would be destroyed.
The Chiss had assumed that they could burrow beneath the ice of Hoth and live underground, as they did on their home planet of Csilla. What they had not taken into account, however, was that the frozen ocean that made up most of Hoth?s surface was very vulnerable to seismic activity, which made living in tunnels impossible.
The Chiss were, however, well-suited to arctic environments, and Teskled knew that they would learn from their mistake and stay aboveground in the future. The attempt to colonize Hoth was going well, despite a few setbacks, and the Chiss settlers should be ready for the new arrivals within a week. That is, they would be if the Republic didn?t find them. The Ascendancy had wagered that the Republic, seeing as how it was currently embattled with the CIS, would not notice the Chiss?s violation of their borders, but if they did, the 75 man force on Hoth would not be able to defend themselves adequately.
Teskled put such thoughts out of his mind as he reached the gravsled and deftly piloted it to his assigned loading point, where its cargo area was swiftly filled by other Chiss.

Meanwhile, several hundred kilometers above Teskled, a Carrack-class light cruiser orbited the planet. The Chiss incursions into the Republic had not gone unnoticed by Palpatine. Due to the Chiss being preoccupied with the removal of their equipment from the tunnels of Hoth, they had not noticed the cruiser slip out of hyperspace and go into orbit around their planet; that mistake would be the death of them. Jedi Master Jai Maruk, in command of the company of clone troopers aboard the cruiser, had been given the mission of destroying the Chiss presence on the planet, and he meant to do so.
After the cruiser had located the Chiss settlement, it launched the four LAAT/I dropships, one for each of the four 36-man platoons in the company, accompanied by two V-19 Torrent starships to provide escort, and they headed planetside, the LAAT/Is using atmospheric containment shielding until they reached atmosphere. Each of the larty?s was referred to by a comm callsign for the purposes of the mission, which consisted of LAAT/and a number one to four.
In LAAT/2, Maruk and a platoon of 36 troopers with their lieutenant waited out the short ride to the planet?s surface. The air was cold, even with the side doors shut and all temp-control units set to maximum, and it was all Maruk could do to avoid shivering through his thin Jedi robes in front of the clones, who, in their usual stoic way, were showing no discomfort, if they felt the cold at all through their armor. Maruk turned to speak to the lieutenant in charge of the 36 men on board LAAT/2, but was interrupted by the sound of the ship?s pilot speaking over the intercom. ?Brace yourselves. The Chiss have sent fighters our way.?
Seconds later, they entered the atmosphere, and the exterior of the ship quickly heated up. Exterior sounds became audible, and the automated side doors slid open. No sooner had they done so when the fiery blossom of an exploding V-19 erupted, the shock wave rocking the gunship and knocking over a deactivated med droid that had been improperly fastened to the wall. Maruk could see the remaining V-19 fighting valiantly against five Chiss ships, before it was destroyed. The guns of the LAAT/Is be
