Considering my kitten is growing up surrounded by my crazy dogs, yeah she's gonna end up thinking she's a dog too.

My old cat thought she was a dog, I'm pretty sure. My bengal is just like having a dog. Cat likes trouble and likes to fetch.

My problem with it is that it's such a huge disjuncture from the rest of the flow of the novel. You've got the usual exposition, rising action, climax, etc, and in the ROTK these fit both the final novel in itself and the three-book arc. But then the Hobbits are just about done and get back home, only to discover the home they've been trying to return to no longer exists and that some second-rate baddie whose plot the author hasn't tied up yet is running everything. So the hobbits go on a killing spree and the series ends without the usual denouement expected in a plot.

This is sort of akin to the Rebels destroying the second Death Star in ROTJ, only to discover, upon returning to the fleet, that all the ships had been taken over by Jabba's gang. And they had to beat him a second time in the last 5 minutes of the film.

The hobbits (of Hobbiton) also seemed out of place as the warriors here -- by the end of the last book, Saruman had a ton of enemies. His backstory was way more elaborate than that of the films. Hobbiton was never part of his plot, and he had no prior links to Hobbits. I suppose we're supposed to think he was desperate or something for minions by the end of the series, but honestly, a dozen or more other characters and factions would have been more reliable choices and would have fit with the backstory we already knew of him.

Somebody told me once that Tolkien intentionally added that Hobbiton part in at the last minute since he thought it would register with the European WWII vets, who often returned to a home devastated by war. I would otherwise be fine with that, if it actually fit the rest of the novel, let alone the rest of the series. As it stands, it sticks out like a sore thumb -- as if Tolkien realized at the 11th hour he forgot about Saruman's plot, and just penned him in at the end.

(Ahhhh I love a good LOTR rant! :p)

Both. But hotmail's new interface really gets on my nerves. Does M$ think everybody has a touch screen now?

Yes, moment of silence for the Windows Start Button, we're back to blotting out the desktop background with an assload of icons.

I can't help but laugh at how the convertible tablet is being treated like a new thing when its been around for years. I personally need a good keyboard so only the Thinkpad X series will work. Whoops. But actually yeah, seems like the market thinks everybody wants a touchscreen tablet that looks pretty. Ultraportable market R.I.P. and Practicality be damned. Gimmicks are driving the notebook market. I really don't get the ultabook thing since you can make a 13 or 14 inch (Its ridiculous 15 inch notebooks are being included in this label) computer as thin and light as possible and you've still got the large footprint and about the same portability as a regular 13 or 14 inch notebook. You really need to get down to 11-12 inches to have something that's really portable. And yes that's a major compromise when your on a screen that small.

Really not very surprising since we've kind of hit a ceiling far as the power of a computer's inners go. Any computer you pick up will have more power than the average user who just browses the web and does school or office work knows what to do with. If only all these cheap god damn awful 1366x768 screens would go away. My biggest hope is the market will move to actual full HD screens (seemed to be the trend with smartphones and tablets) being the norm just so higher resolutions can become easy to find again.

I always laugh when someone buys a watercooled i7-3960X for web-surfing. Why not buy a Core2, throw a SSD in it and be done with it?

I really want to see the return of the 16:10 1920x1200 displays.
[rant]They assume everyone wants a 16:9 screen. At least keep the professional laptops and monitors in 16:10.[/rant]

The Outlook interface Seerow was talking about was the layout design on Hotmail, which they now call Outlook. Not Outlook itself.

Lol. That's always pretty funny. People serious over estimate their needs. Its also funny when they buy the best hardware because they equate that to longevity and I hear ya on the screen aspect ratio. They thing everyone just watches movies on their laptops and nothing else (well not really, its cheaper to cut the screens that way so the unknowing consumer gets shafted). A return to the 16:10 just isn't happening. My sweet spot was always 15.4 inch on 1680x1050. Not so high it hurts my eyes and still plenty of space to have a few windows open side by side.

Admiral Ackbar - Fish n' Chippendale

I saw this at the previous local comic con. What kind of a twisted person would pick up a naked Ackbar figure?
And will he still be up for grabs at the next one come Sunday?

Been getting an awful lot of trainings lately that are about promoting self serve options to customers. I'm getting more and more scared. I kinda think the move where they all the suddenly decided to give my department weekends off since we've turned into such a small specialist group (started with 200 reps 4 years ago and down to just 31) is a real bad sign. I've been laid off once before and similar stuff happened.
