Always imagined the rebels stealing and smuggling some of their fighters, at least early on. Like in the Darklighter comics they steal x-wings and droids. Always enjoyed those kinds of stories.

Given that pirates, corporations, and various other private individuals and groups have fighters, I am kind of surprised the rebels don't use more fighters bought on the open market.

Or fighters stolen from the Empire, like half their capital ships are.

Why steal a fighter, when you can steal an entire design team and their plans, enabling you to make the fighter yourself?

Cause you need factories to build them, and factories are pretty hard to hide.

Plus, I figure more is always better, and when you get a capital ship crew to defect that you are probably getting its fighter compliment as well.

I noticed that in Starfighters of Adumar, TIE Fighters are a common sight in Rebel Star Destroyer hangars - which supports that.

Yes, I forget in a galaxy of hundreds of millions of star systems with dozens of worlds each, a factory is going to stick out. :p

*Vader and Ozzel sees a shield generator* "My lord, there are so many uncharted settlements, it could be smugglers, it could be..."

Couldn't you just convert a Lucrehulk? Those things have some space. Boom. Mobile factory.

A very unique TIE to say the least:

    That is true. Good point.

    Interesting idea. I love it!

(And now I am picturing an automated factory ship that goes around mining asteroids to build hyperspace-capable missile, which would wait around until after the ship left before heading to a target by making many small jumps, some way out of the way, so that they won't lead back to the ship. Though, that's not really cinematic enough for Star Wars)

If they ever make another Star Wars fighter game, they need this as a skin for TIEs. (And alternate colors for ships in general.)

I'm annoyed that the TIE's land on their wings now. I thought the idea of them taking off from racks from the EU sounded cooler and made more sense, given the TIE's design.

I'm not bothered by it now. While I doubt TIE's have repulsorlifts, I'm betting that the thrusters are sensitive enough to handle a landing....think Harrier jet.

.....but racks would make it easier to pack more TIE's on a ship.

TIEs landed on their wings in the old EU...Star Wars Early Adventures and the first arc of the X wing comic series come to mind.

By and large though, it was rare. Usually it only happened when there were no advanced facilities around.

What's funny is that canonically, TIEs have been shown on racks in Imperial hangar bays. A TIE bomber is shown on a rack when Vader's shuttle lands in RotJ.

I can get over it, but I though the rack concept was cool, and a nice touch.

The ANH SE shows a TIE fighter suspended in mid-air.

We also see TIEs being held by robotic arms/clamps in Fire Across the Galaxy.

They still have the external transport racks and I am also pretty sure you saw TIEs in racks in the Rebels pilot as well on a ImpStar.

Does anyone know of a site that lists all known vessel types and classes?

Strange if that's the case - I know Star Trek had a devoted site to ships and classes, well before the wiki.

I used to use the Unofficial SWE site for that purpose, Back In The Day, but I'm guessing that hasn't been updated in a while.

The rise of wikis seems to have killed off most individual, specific fan encyclopedias.

Nah, just making them available on the Internet.

Wookieepedia never convinced me to stop working on my own - in fact, it probably convinced me more. ;)

A Gladiator-class Star Destroyer. They first appeared in the Droids cartoon, with villains like Admiral Terrinald Screed and Gir Kybo Ren-Cha using them as flagships.
