I'm not surprised by this. In the old EU, ISD's were too large to enter the atmosphere. In the NEU, large capital ships can, so it makes sense for ventral weapons batteries for bombarding targets.

I think there have always been ventral turrets. I'm pretty sure you see shots coming from the same turret housing as what's been labeled the tractor beam projectors in ANH. Makes sense to me for them to mount a turbolaser alongside the tractor beam emitter for maximum functionality.

Perhaps found another unused ship from TFA in this Saturday Night Live Sketch which you can see in the hanger bay at 3:03. Of course it could just be a ship made for the Sketch by the SNL crew, but meh, who knows. Also noticed the TIE fighter is flying backwards :p.

New preview for Rebels this week:

They're doing that annoying English with Aurebesh-style lettering again. At least it makes it easy to read the name of the ship type, "Hammerhead corvette".

Maybe Rendili made a Hammerhead-class ship for all occasions and classes.

Well, having a Hammerhead-class corvette works for me. I'm still hoping they somehow tie it to Alderaan's PSF, but that is probably wishful thinking.

I'll laugh my @ss off if one of the vessels is named Another Chance. :p

They probably reuse the Hammerhead name (despite ongoing protests by Ithoran advocates) for various designs.

They were, but then the Thranta-class from SWTOR was Corellian, so I guess who knows who builds this one?

Good point. And these news appear closer to the Corellian size anyway.

Honestly, as much as I love Rendili, all of those hammerhead ships (including the one from KOTOR) should have been Corellian designs. Hell, I'm still irritated that the Pelta-class frigate is a KDY design, when it CLEARLY has a CEC hammerhead. :p

Well if there is a reason for the hammerhead design beyond aesthetics there is no reason why other companies wouldn't adopt it.

That's true. We still don't know who made the Crucible, either.

Rendili Hypernautics... which would have been defunct by the modern era. As far as I can remember, only CEC survived the period between KOTOR and the OT, maybe CEC bought them out or something?

I also imagine that a lot of ships were built under license, especially during wartime, like what happened in the US during WW2

Definitely, plus... most copyrights have a time limit. Considering how long those designs were in service, the design's copyright may well have expired. Then anyone could make their own version.

Finally saw the video. It's a miniaturized version of the Altor-class refueling ship. :)

    Here's the new lore:

    HAMMERHEAD CORVETTE
Receiving its name thanks to a time-honored design that stretches back centuries, the Hammerhead Corvette is a powerful transport. While not flashy, this starship has a strong body, forceful engines, and heavy weaponry; Princess Leia Organa once delivered a trio of Hammerhead Corvettes to the Phoenix Squadron rebels on Lothal, adding some much-needed craft to the rebel fleet.

So, they don't put the original design down to millennia ago just to keep things vague for now.

We know CEC built Imperial-classes under licence. Maybe part of that deal was KDY producing a CEC design in exchange?

Following the time honored tradition of having a ship described as multiple classes, tonight we have the new Hammerhead-class corvette from Rebels. First described in the episode as a cruiser, then as a transport, only to ultimately be classified as a corvette. :p
