    FrankFurt;

    Frénke, in old german means to burn the tongue.

    "Das Furt" was a medieval torture device that clamped onto the lower leg, because of this it was known as the "Dog".

    So literally Frankfurt means a dog that burns the tongue, or more rightly a "Hot Dog".

    BTW, Frankfurt is a lovely place, but the last time I visited there was an awful lot of Germans about.

    :D yeah right, where did you get that from? [face_laugh]

    A couple of hundred years ago, when the "Franken" (people from an area called Franken) moved north, they had to cross the river Main and looked for a shallow spot. That shallow spot in a deep river is called "Furt". Later they built a castle to protect the "Furt". SInce the Frank´s discovered the "Furt", the city is called Frankfurt. Very simple.

    Actually I´ve only been to Frankfurt once and I didn´t like it. Didn´t see more than the central station though. ;)

    TC: well, thanks for the offer, but I am happy ;) In case of me being in need of a monkey, I´ll get back to you, though ;)

    well, yeah... did I tell you about the trip I made last Fall, Jean? When I stays at Senol´s for a night cause there was nothing left at the youth hostel? I went to Frankfurt the next day. the hostel there was completely booked out , too. So I had to call a friend who is studying "close" to Frankfurt. [face_plain] Had to go to Karlsruhe which took me about another 1 1/2 hours... Just wasted a couple of hours going to Frankfurt, never seing anything of the city itself.

    Train stations are pretty much the only thing I know in a lot of german towns/cities :D
