    Corellia Closes Borders
Bel Iblis Leaves Senate in Uproar
Corellians Insist it is not Secession - Invoke Obscure Constitutional Proviso

SENATE ROTUNDA, CORUSCANT - The Senate chambers filled with loud outcries of protest and dismay yesterday morning following Senator Garm Bel Iblis' surprise announcement that Corellia would close its borders and pull out of the Military Creation Act vote.

    [image=http://holonetnews.com/47/news/img/story_1.gif]

"The Corellian sector, one of the founding fathers of the Republic, is not seceding," stressed Bel Iblis. "However, Corellia will not participate in what it deems a profound error that threatens its sovereignty."

After the announcement, Bel Iblis and his retinue left the Senate Hall under heavily armed CorSec escort who pushed aside journalists and critical Senators. Bel Iblis refused comment. The Senator left Coruscant, reportedly for Corellia.

As Bel Iblis said, no Articles of Secession were tendered. As the official record stands, the Corellian delegation enacted an obscure proviso called Contemplanys Hermi, an olys Corellisi phrase meaning "meditative solitude."

It is an ancient Constitutional clause afforded Corellia, recognizing its distinct society and contributions to the founding of the Republic. In exchange for giving up veto power, Corellia and its constituencies can unilaterally withdraw from Senate duties for the duration of the contention. The clause has not been enacted in over 450 years, since Corellia's ill-fated attempt at independence.

The decision comes after a week of closed-door meetings between Bel Iblis and Corellian Diktat Shyla Merricope. When the Military Creation Act vote was announced, Corellia was one of its most outspoken critics, both in the Senate and the planetary government offices in Corellia's capital city of Coronet.

"CorSec's men and women will not be drafted into Republic service, to die on a distant world outside of Corellia's borders. Nor will armed forces from other worlds be billeted in our homes." Merricope said in caucus, the day following the vote announcement. She later told the sector's leading newsnet, Corellia Sector Newsfeed, that she would do "whatever possible to preserve the integrity of Corellia for Corellians."

Palpatine, who to did not attend the eventful Senate session but was instead on Aargau at a finance conference, was brief in his statements to reporters. "I am disheartened to hear that one of our closest brothers lacks such faith in democracy."

Others weren't as measured with their statements. "This is an outrageous display of self-serving hypocrisy," said Senator Orn Free Taa (Ryloth). "Two years ago, Bel Iblis stood before the Senate, arguing about the legality of secession, and now he goes and pulls a stunt like this? It's a grievous blow to unity. My worlds, in the distant Outer Rim have stood by Coruscant through the most tumultuous of heat storms. That one so integral to the Core should lack a spine is shameful."

Senator Ister Paddie (Sermeria) was also critical of Corellia's move. "The selfishness is what astounds me. The Corellian sector is largely self-sufficient, wealthy, and with its own defense force. My sector hasn't even a third of these riches, yet we are committed to support the Republic in the most trying of times."

    What This Means:

Native and naturalized citizens are allowed free transit to and from the Corellian sector; all others are denied access without special provision from CorSec.

Interstellar trade vessels must deposit cargoes on Outlier worlds, where they will be brought to inner world destinations via Corellian Merchant Guild transports.

All off-duty and reserve CorSec personnel are now activated.

Non-Corellian businesses based in the sector are allowed to continue operating, as long as the abide by the travel and shipping restrictions imposed; typically, this requires the business to purchase mem

But, I think the holonetnews.com is pretty fun, setting the atmosphere for AOTC.

Valorum & Gunray Bracket Ends of Book Sales

I can understand no one want to read about Valorum, but why is Gunray so popular ?[face_plain]

I have a suggestion, Gandolf, I think it will be better if you list the titles of the news you didn't post.

    Xizor...
They're long-standing WEG creations, been around since one of their early 1st Ed. adventures, Scavenger Hunt. And they've been appearing ever since.

They're essentially the comedy center of the Star Wars universe.

(Btw, it was a Squib who was actually the "first" Mace Windu in the GFFA. :D )

Just some basic Squib stuff you can check out...
    1. Scavenger Hunt, Brad Freeman, West End Games, 1989
    2. Galaxy Guide 4: Alien Races, Troy Denning, West End Games, 1989
    3. Heroes and Rogues, Paul Sudlow and Rick Stuart, West End Games, 1995
    4. Galaxy Guide 7: Mos Eisley
...etc. There's literally a bunch more Squib appearances - they're all over WEG and other stuff.

    1. Squib
      "Squib
a small alien bipedal race from the planet Skor II, the Squibs are a nomadic race who were forced to roam their homeworld in search of the resources they needed to survive. When a Dorcin trader landed on the planet, the Squib traded him the mineral rights to a frozen waste in return for starship technology. Now the Squibs travel the galaxy looking for junk to salvage. Their bodies are covered in colorful fur which ranges from deep red to brilliant blue, and their fox-like faces have large eyes and tufted ears. They are confident and curious by nature, and love to make things more complicated than they need to be. The Squib negotation process is a good example: when one party wishes to obtain something from another, they must make the first pitch. If they do not, the controlling party will simply stand by stoically, waiting for the first request. Squibs also revel in haggling, and consider it the highest form of communication. They have been in a salvage war with the Ugors, and are often found trying to claim the same junk before the Ugors can. To a Squib, the only good Ugor is a ripped-off Ugor. The Squib race is ruled by a polyanarchy, which was formed by a group of Squib kings. Each king ruled a tribe of salvagers, and worked with the other kings to ensure salvage rights. Despite their scavenging ways, Squibs also developed a high level of technology, and their tractor beam generators are among the most efficient in the galaxy. Many Squib starships use these tractor beams as weapons, instead of lasers. (GG4, SH)"
    2. Squib Merchandising Consortium
"This Squib corporation manufactured the reclamation ships used to scour the Paradise sector for salvage. The consortium was originally chartered by the Empire to collect the detritus from space, refurbish it, and resell it. Every Squib born is, by default, an employee of the consortium, and must yield to the commands of its leader, the "Illustrious Chieftain of Junkyards."
They're used to the best effect when they're trying to be "serious" about anything as in this Holonetnews account. Hey, when you're ruled by polyanarchy, you can't go wrong. :D

And of course, the best Squib reference as given by TOS...

    3. Mace Windu
"After being passed up by Owen Lars, R5-D4 was stolen from the Jawa sandcrawler by a mischievous Squib trader named Macemillian-winduarté. The trader sold the droid to Alliance historian Voren Na'al, who had the little red unit refurbished. He planted R5-D4 within the government offices of Mos Eisley, where the droid became a valuable source of intelligence data.
"Mace Windu." :D See, WEG had "Mace Windu" appear in their material loooooooong before Lucas got to writing the PT. They took the name from one of Lucas earliest SW conceptual accounts from 1973 or so and put it on a Squib. Then when Mace Windu (the real bad mo-fo) re-appeared in Lucas' prequel plans, the Squib was ret-conned into being just a shortened version of a longer name. :D

A couple years ago I e-mailed Pablo Hidalgo about how this would be fixed in the continuity.

I had the idea of Jedi Master Mace Windu perhaps saving a colony of Squibs, or mediating a dispute between them and the Ugors, and one of them named their son in his honor. He said it was a good idea, and then mentioned the Macemillian-Winduarte thing.

Don't forget the best tale of the original Mace Windu..."Spare Parts" in Adventure Journal # 11.

    Okay, I have a question.

If Bel Iblis pulled out of the Senate, then how is it that he and Mon Mothma and (I can't remember the other person!) create the Rebellion? Do they visit him on Corellia? Surely they wouldn't talk about insurrection via holo. Or does he come back to the Senate later?

And did we already know that Corellia was going to pull out and close its borders? I seem to remember something like that somewhere in my memory, but I'm not sure.

And if they closed their borders, then how would Corran's grandfather have worked with a Jedi?

Speaking of which, do you think we'll hear about that deal with the Jensaari or whatever on HNN?

    Okay, I'm done now.

One of the Tales comics has a short story with Corran's grandfather, apaprently set post-TPM but pre-AOTC, so pre-closed borders.

I thought they did it in secret on Chandrilla or something.
