    To me it will be complete when I see the LAST movie with my Mum.
    She stood for 5.3 hours to get tickets in '77 and I will buy tickets to the best seats in the house in 2005. We have both watched all movies together, sounds pathetic but it's what we do(It's the ONLY movies we watch together). We started the journey together-we will see the end the same way. :)

    The birthday present excuse is from the original "Hobbit" text which is now lost to the pages of history and very old copies of the book. So even though Tolkien changed the context of several scenes of "The Hobbit", he actually pre-wrote an excuse in "LOTR" which he didn't need in the end, but forgot to remove.

    interesting. I always took it as some sort of weird property of the ring - because, as you most assuredly recall, Gollum/Smeagol considered the ring to be his birthday present. I always thought Bilbo was being "Gollum-like" by saying that... a deliberate move.

    Funny.
