    From empireonline.co.uk:

The Oscar board has chosen its seven contenders for Best Visual Effects at next year's ceremony and there's love for Revenge of the Sith and King Kong, but nothing for Sin City.

The other five places on the list will be taken by Batman Begins, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and War of the Worlds. Three from the shortlist will then be chosen as the final nominees.

The Academy dont like Star Wars

In the 2002 Oscars AOTC wasn't even nomoinated for best special effects and it was won by TTT
AOTC would've won if it had been nominated, but the Academy chose not to enter it

They frown upon Lucas for being such as successful independant director, and so they wont honour him with awards

Like Speilberg in the early years, they didn't like him and so he never won best director, even though a lot of the films he did owned all the other nominations

He finally won best director for Shindler's List, but it took a long time

I think Kong will win. Although there was some dodgey green screen issues, the ape itself was outstanding.

The film on the other hand, is a different matter...
