I'll still give this movie a chance. I was a MAJOR G.I.Joe dork growing up in the 1980's. :-B

    That whole 'Accelerator Suit' thing does bug me a bit. The closest classic toy that resembles it was this thing;

    http://www.yojoe.com/vehicles/83/snake/

And it was a COBRA thing at that! Things need to get updated for the 21st century, I understand. Ray Park as Snake Eyes is probably the single best casting job they could have done.

That yojoe website is pretty cool for looking back at classic toys and such. :)

A movie trailer is supposed to make you want to see a movie. In that regard the GI Joe trailer fails... badly. Thats just my take, and being the nerd that I am I probably still will watch the movie and be disappointed by it.

I know. I always like looking at sites like that to see stuff and say "I had that!" or "so and so had that".

I flat out refuse to see this movie just as I refuse to see any of the Transformers movies by Michael Bay. Part of what made GI Joe so damned cool was that the guys were already badass. They didn't need these accelerator suits, they could unleash hell upon Cobra just by looking at them funny. GI Joe was made up of highly trained best of the best types who's talent would be wasted as regular soldiers, putting these guys in these suits is like putting a jet engine on a Hummer, it's not needed!

Then there's the travesty of Cobra Commander looking nothing like how he did in the show. I'd be willing to accept the little drop cloth mask thingy with eyeholes, although true GI Joe fans would prefer the silver mask/blue helmet thingy. About the only thing they got right was making the Baroness look hot, but her charms will be wasted any GI Joe fan who paid attention knows all too well that Cobra Commander and Destro each had a massive crush on each other. It was all too obvious that their fights were secret lover's quarrels. Even the arrival of Serpentor couldn't keep those two apart. Sadly, everyone knows that showing the relationship between the two of them would be box office poison for the target demographic, but if they play their cards right, they could sneak "I wish I knew how to quit you." into some Cobra Commander/Destro dialogue...

Why I probably won't like this movie:

    - They changed it from being the US military to an international peacekeeping force. Not that there's anything wrong with international peacekeepers. But remember that other franchise that they did that too in an effort to capitalize on it's popularity? Yeah.

    - Cobra Commander will be played by Jason Voorhees, who is in turn being played by that kid from Third Rock.

    - The fact that the major battle scene in the streets is a cross between Transformers and The Matrix. And throw in a pinch of black suit Spiderman with Snake Eyes.

Not very promising. But I'll still go see it.

First, they changed it back to being an American team because of negative backlash. Second, if they hadn't changed it back, I would hardly say how Street Fighter turned out would be the biggest reason to be against it. More because G.I. Joe's very tagline is A Real American Hero.

That said, as much as I'm expecting the film to blow, I really must disagree with some of your disagreements with the film...

I always get a kick out of people criticizing the casting choice of Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Cobra Commander based on the sitcom he was in a long time ago. I guess Tom Hanks can't ever be put in a good role because he got famous playing a cross-dresser on TV.
But the real thing that makes me laugh about it is the fact that Cobra Commander is under a freaking mask the whole movie! It wouldn't matter if Paula Abdul was playing him, for crying out loud! So if you're gonna have someone under that mask, why not a very gifted actor? You'll notice I listed Gordon-Levitt as one of the heavenly casting choices above.

Okay, now you're just making random associations based on the color of the character's outfit.

It is DARTH MAUL as SNAKE EYES!!!

Seriously that is the coolest thing about this so far! ...at least until he hooks 2 swords together, grows horns and the swords turn red, THEN I may just walk out! :p

Okay, I'm not in the mood to wait so I'll get this out there right now. Anyone decides that it will be more fun to take any more shots at other users in this thread rather than talk about the subject matter, a phrase regarding bricks in a large volume comes to mind. This is the only warning.

From the trailer the G.I. Joe movie looks like an epic fail. But like others, I'll probably go see this film. Why? For the same reason people galk at train wrecks or car crashes.

    Plus I want to see:

Most people measure an actor's ability by what they have seen them portray. Its not necesarily an accurate reflection but its not unreasonable either. In the case of Gordon-Levitt all most people ever know him from is 3rd Rock from the Sun, so its difficult to give him the benefit of the doubt and imagine him as perhaps the most iconic character in the franchise. Its not unexpected that most would doubt his ability. IMO the burden of responsibility is on him to demonstrate that he can pull it off, not on the audience to accept the casting on blind faith. After all Tom Hanks had to prove his ability time and time again, for many years after Bosom Buddies.

Despite growing up during the time both were established and popular, I never really was interested in either Transformers or GI Joe. Batman and X-Men came out and that is where my attention went (as well as the first few seasons of Power Rangers [face_blush])

So, when I saw Transformers, I had no issue with it as a movie. I only knew the two main characters (Optimus and Megatron) and while I find Anthony Anderson insufferable, on the whole the movie was decent for something to do on a summer day. And I also didn't mind Transformers 2 despite several large flaws. But from the very beginning, GI Joe has failed to capture my interest. The first strike against it was Marlon Wayans. No offense to some comedians, but I have never found someone from one area like comedy or music to be that good in a summer blockbuster. Ever. They always fall flat and sound fake. It screamed of using a big name (which is sad on its own). Granted I found the idea of Ray Park as Snake Eyes a brilliant move (once I looked up the character) and Dennis Quaid is never terrible. But the rest were nothing special.

Then the trailer came out with Star Trek and it was just bad. Without even knowing what I was watching until near the end, I was put off by the suits, the actors and some of the effects. It looked like something out of Disney's Inspector Gadget (terrible adaption. Destroyed my childhood memory of the show) when the Eiffel tower was being dissolved. And the suits looked not only unnecessary, but stupid as well. The big action scene they showed likely is where most of their effects budget went which makes me worry about how the rest of it will look.

Overall, I've never seen a trailer that immediately put me off from seeing a movie as much as this one did. And it had the exact same effect on my friends. I can not see myself justifying spending 10.50 on this. I can't even see myself going for a matinee or on student day for the 7.50 price tag. Frankly, I feel I should be paid to see this movie. So, unless it ends up on tv for free (which will eventually happen), I will not see this movie.

I liked GI Joe better than Barbie. And my mom always yelled at me for putting Joe in bed with Barbie with their clothes off. [face_laugh] THAT'S the movie I really want to see. [face_mischief] Seriously, I'll probably see this one. I just want to see stuff blow up and this looks like it will fit the bill. I don't have any real expectations going in, so I am less likely to be disappointed. :p

It's a shame that the body of work he has done since 3rd Rock is all in movies that haven't gotten as much publicity as their quality dictates. Brick, Stop Loss and Mysterious Skin are ones that immediately spring to mind.

I just saw Stop/Loss the other day. Gordon-Levitt was FANTASTIC in it. [face_thinking] Channing Tatum was in it too. And he didn't suck or break into a dance routine. :p

I loved me my Transformers and GI Joe as a kid. [face_love] It's just that I was more than a little put off that I was watching a trailer with a dissolving Eiffel Tower and some crazy Halo-inspired suited commando's and this was my literal train of thought... "WTH, who dissolves the Effiel Tower?... Oh, they're blowing stuff up... I didn't know this was Halo... Girl with red hair... Wait a minute... Is this GI Joe? WT*?"

It shouldn't take till the end of the trailer for a fan to identify which movie they're advertising. Usually they lead off with something cool and immediately identifiable. If they'd flashed the freakin logo or, hell, just a shot of Scarlett, I would have been "Oh! It's Joe!".

That said, I'll probably see it. [face_blush] Hubby and I work shifts so I think I can justify the matinee price for the two of us.

Even the theatrical trailer for the movie is bad. Typical HURRR Evil organization is gonna take over the world! DURRR Assemble the best to make a team! [insert generic terms + action sequence that is identical to Transformers] Oh and here's an overused line to end it.

    "THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING"

If the technology doesn't exist in the real world yet, it very well could be in ten years, which I understand is when this film is supposed to take place.

I've always wondered the reason why a Ninja would wear white.
