I will most likely be a Trandoshan. Looks like the most interesting character, along with Wookies, in my opinion anyway.

Don't know what profession I'm choosing either, I'll have to get some more info before I make my decision.

A lot of the concerns above have been adressed in general form in the FAQ, and much more specifically in the starwarsgalaxies.com forums.

I've been browsing the Galaxies FAQ and board regularly, and from what I've seen, Verant is doing everything possible to make an "authentic star wars" experience.

While having lots of players running around as Jedi would be lame, it would be even lamer if one could not play the game and eventually become a jedi.

The devs interaction with fans on the boards is something I've never seen before to this extent.

For what it's worth, if YOU don't want to be able to be killed by a Jedi (or any other human player), you can set yourself up and play the game in such a way that won't be killed.

    I know it's complicated, but check out these scenarios as posted by the game devs;

    galaxies PvP scenarios

Of course, reading the previous PvP threads will help ease the confusion.

I don't really know how skills progress, but it should be really hard to be a Jedi.

    FAQ Jedi info

What do you all think of Verant's decision to allow Jedi in Galaxies? It's a pretty big ass continuity error if you ask me, as Luke, Yoda, da Emperor, and Darth Vader were the only Jedi alive during the OT time period. (Maybe that C'Boath guy, if you count the expanded universe)

But Galaxies is EU! And in the EU there are a lot more Jedi, and other force sensitive beings, running around than seen in the films.

As you can tell, I have great faith in the developers of this game. I have never played an online MMORPG before, nor do I have any desire to, but Galaxies is something WAY different.

Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast...

Anyway back to the point. I know you don't want to see Maul wannabies running around. Fair enough, I can see why, noether do I. Similarly *I* don't want to see Mon Cal's trying to be Ackbar, or humans trying to be Han, or Wookiees trying to be Chewie etc.

    I agree.

And that ANYONE playing who tries to run around emulating ANY movie character will be damn annoying.

    I agree.

I never meant to imply that other species didn't lend themselves to extreme fan emulation because that would be false. What I was trying to get at, and perhaps my main point, was that the Zabrak species lends itself to be emulated more by the certain player group known as the d00des. That's why I used the "dude speak" ("trying to roxx0r my unl337 lightside aZZ") earlier. Think of your the mentality of your average 14-16 year old kid (keep in mind that older people can still have this mentality). What is cool? The force. Lightsabers. What is cooler? DARK side of the force (Destruction! cool!). DOUBLE-Bladed Lightsabers! I was about to let my inner-d00d consume me and continue with a d00d dramatization that would leave you all scared for life but I shall cease this. You might be thinking... hey, I think those things are cool, I'm no 16 year old punk kid. The difference is your fondness of these things does not seep into every damn aspect of your playing.

It is hard to explain about d00ds to people who have not had to put up with them in a persistant online world. I was stereotyping big time, but they do exist, and the Zabrak will attract them like flys, more than your average species in Galaxies. Should something not be put in because it has the potential to be abused by players? Is putting the Zabrak in worth it, just like any other species which has the potential to be made some lame Star Wars cliche? Well, I guess that depends how valuable and familiar you think the Zabrak are to the Star Wars universe to begin with.

You can probably count on me hunting Jedi. You might have remembered me bitching about the inclusion of Jedi ever since they were proposed. I was comforted by their promises made a while back. For some a good recap of what I'm talking about go here.

    Hey Krayt,

It is hard to explain about d00ds to people who have not had to put up with them in a persistant online world. I was stereotyping big time, but they do exist, and the Zabrak will attract them like flys, more than your average species in Galaxies.

Aha. I see exactly where you're coming from now. And having never experienced these players before, I can only imagine how painful they must be.

    Lets hope stuff like this takes longer than their (collective) attention span will allow for;

    4.10 Can I make a double-bladed lightsaber?

Learning how to build a double-sided lightsaber will likely be more difficult than learning how to build a normal lightsaber. You will also probably need more components (additional crystals, for example). And, we may make it more difficult to learn how to wield the weapon effectively, since so few Jedi have spent the time necessary to master the double-bladed lightsaber, and it is so rare during the original trilogy's time period.

And if that fails, perhaps we T.FNrs can join forces and rid the galaxy of their vile dOOd azzes. :)

Also, can someone please decypher "trying to roxx0r my unl337.." for me. <sigh> I'm obviously showing my age here. :(

Okay jp, it can't be explained any better than Lee'Mon does at planet quake:

It's time that hax0r speakers got a brief history lesson. Hax0rspeak dates back to the BBS days, when The Man was still capable of finding people who threatened Very Bad Things on the pre-Internet. Authorities and admins would run tracker programs on message boards, searching for code words such as "hacking" and "porn" that would tip them off to illegal activity. To circumvent this, netizens began using ASCII code to type the words that would be easily tracked, such as "hax0r" for hacking and "pr0n" for porn.

So, back in the day, it actually was cool to use hax0rspeak. Well, times have changed. Most of the people that originated the activity have moved on. Those that still partake in these activities have safe havens where they can talk more safely; a tracker nowadays would have difficulty finding "true" illegal activity amongst all the crap that's out on the net.

But another group has picked up the hax0rspeak trait. In hopes of attaining that image of the cool hacker that "sticks it to Da Man," these players have adopted the ancient language. The problem is, other people automatically know they're not actually hackers, because hackers don't talk like that anymore.

There ya go. That should be pretty clear. I use this language sometimes to make me laugh, mostly by doing a stereotypical impression of another computer group. Never in a roleplaying game. :)

edit: That particular phrase meant 'trying to rock your unelite ass.' Which can further be translated into 'trying to kick your sorry sorry ass.'

edit2: d00ds and griefers are the roleplayers biggest enemies and we will surely face them in Galaxies. Griefers live to, well, give you Grief, piss you off, they get off on that. There will be griefing in Galaxies, there is no way to design around it. Fortunately I've developed a thick skin for this.

    "rock" and "unelite", eh?

Is the word unelite prevalent in hacker speak? To quote on of my countrymen, How Bizarre.

Thanks for your history lesson. Hilarious!

Back on topic, one thing I've wondered 'bout in SWG. If a Wookiee tries to communicate with me, (and I've never learned their language), will the text that I get to read be translated to "Ooooaaaarghhh Ngggg Ngggg OOaar!"? So as I need to try & figure out what they're saying from their gestures?

Maybe I'll go and research this... (beats working!)

Hmm, languages should be more diverse than in EverQuest. Makes interpretation pretty cool. That might be an in demand job. Hmm.

I just went to the main site and checked out the intro. Bothans that look like Bothans! Check it out! I'd almost want to be one, but Bothans are all Newt Gingrich/Rush Limbaugh types, and I'm into being the good guy.

    Good work, Krayt. rolleyes.gif :)

I'm glad that you can own property in Galaxies. It's nice to have a pad to chill at. And a place to stash all your booty, etc. Another thing I disliked about EQ. No houses or property. Just a bank.
