Grendel is usually referred to as a giant or troll. Kennings for Grendel in the poem include "powerful monster", "herdsman of evil", "moor stepper", "demon corpse", "guardian of crime", "hell-serf", and "captain of evil" (thank you, Wikipedia).

That still doesn't really help in the terms of having a draft figure. I needed an answer that said Grendel was this and could do this and was this. Not possibly this and described as various evil metaphors. If you drafted it, how could you judge it if we don't even know what it really is?

Well how are we gonna judge Beowulf if we don't even know what he defeated?

I'm not sure LotR, by itself, has enough characters to sustain a draft.

He is still obviously a man, a hero. We know what he is physically, which is enough to at least give him a towel so he can shower.

Ah, okay. Missed the point a touch there.

I haven't read the poem in a while, but from what I can remember:

By inference from the whole thing of reaching into Hrothgar's hall and snatching people, I'd say that Grendel's got to stand a couple of storeys high and be able to hold at least one human in one hand. Aside from size, probably much like the minotaur - big, hulking monster, uses claws and teeth rather than weapons, no magical powers and frankly fairly unintelligent. Wouldn't last long against a major hero, but could squash (say) a unicorn between two fingers.

A last-round pick to add some muscle for the team matches, basically :p King Kong-style.

EDIT: Kypt, I got a rough list of 100+ characters from Middle-Earth which you can have a look at if you so wish - a few from LotR, a couple from The Hobbit, and the majority from the Silmarillion. :)

Yeah, me too. But you're gonna have to call it something else from now on because somebody already took the very generic name of Battle Royale in the gaming thread. So quick, start thinking of names you!

Alright, first draft, no harm in adding Grendel. We'll just see what kind of showing it gets. Thank you Nemesis. :)

We'll see if I can do an updated list later tonight if not tomorrow afternoon.

Some ideas: Lord of the Flies, King of the grid/island/mountain/whatever, Grid Wars, Last Man Standing, Natural Selection, Social Darwinism.

    I dunno.

    Mythology Draft

Here we are. I've added some Celts who I think can be in the first draft. But by all means, if I've missed someone (something) you think should be on, speak up now.

You may notice I didn't exactly go into the Arthurian legend(s)... not too sure about that one. I can be swayed, perhaps.

Hey guys, I saw that some of you were talking about creating a battle royal type game with guns and stuff. Anyway, a very very long time ago there was a very similar game in the JCC that I some of used to play, called Laser Tag.

It was pretty fun and I vaguely recall winning the first edition. So I thought I'd show you guys how a similar game worked in the past. I hope it helps!
